Rebekah’s love affair with electronic music began at the tender age of 16, going out and listening to legends such as DAVE CLARKE , DERRICK CARTER, RICHIE HAWTIN and BILLY NASTY at Birmingham’s legendary QUE CLUB. This gave Rebekah her first taste into the world of deep house and techno.
She kicked off 2007 in style with a months residency in SHANGHAI at ABSOLUTE HOUSE where she played 4 nights a week, warming up for luminaries such as JAMES LAVELLE amongst many other established acts. Rebekah’s current UK commitments include a residency at popular underground venue; THE CUSTARD FACTORY in Birmingham where she has already played alongside world class acts such as ERIC PRYDZ, SWITCH, LOTTIE and TANIA VULCANO amongst many others.
Rebekah has also become a regular at some of the worlds most recognised and established festivals! Donning her welly’s, Rebekah has performed in front of massive audiences at UK festivals such as ESCAPE INTO THE PARK and WAKESTOCK. Further a field, she was asked to guest at Serbia’s EXIT FESTIVAL in 2006. This summer of 2007 Rebekah has been booked at the worlds largest dance festival; GLOBAL GATHERING in Stratford Upon Avon and is also returning to the EXIT Festival in Serbia for a second consecutive year….
We caught up with her to talk Djing, travelling and whats hot in her box....................
Please introduce yourself ?
I’m Rebekah the pint sized dj from Birmingham
What or who is behind your musical inspiration?
I suppose what inspired me originally was listening to dj’s like Derrick Carter and Dave Clarke. The first dance record that took it to another level for me was D’elacy’s Hideaway.
How would you describe your sound?
Techno grooves with a dash of soul
You come from Birmingham, What’s the scene up there like compared to London ?
Its a big Saturday night out kind of scene, Fridays have died a death but Birmingham is getting exciting again with the opening of the Q Club as well as the Custard Factory getting stronger too with more quality line ups. Unfortunately Birmingham doesn’t support a round the clock clubbing attitude like London….you guys are more hardcore down there!
What have been up to recently and what can we expect from you over the next couple of months?
I have been busy in the studio working on my own productions as well as some collaborations. I have a remix out in on Toolroom and an EP on Criminal Records both due out in January The EP has been gaining support from the likes of Funk D’Void and Mark Knight.
Lately you have been working with a whole host of people, who would you most like to produce with?
Funk D’Void and Phil Kieran, they create heavy noises that are really unique.
Do you have any secret weapons for the Dancefloor. What are your top 3 dancefloor destroyers ?
Brainstopper – Boris Brejcha
Grain One – Guse & Kober
I’m a Monster – Phil Kieran
Have you any mad plans for Christmas and New Year ?
I’m djing so not so sure if that’s mad as such! Playing Sankeys Boxing night and India for NYE.
What ingredients make a good party?
Quality music, a great sound system and a whole host of up for it clubbers.
What other artists, and labels are you looking at, at the moment and thinking, ‘ This is good’ ?
Harthouse is doing it for me at the moment all the releases have be consistently good. There are so many artists I love but Mark Henning is a producer with a unique sound and Jamie Jones for his beautifully soulful techno
Who do you think will be the next big thing, any hot tips ?
Jamie Jones, Samim, Deadmau5, Kissy Sell Out, Dinky
Who are your influences?
Mark Broom, Boris Brejcha, Adam Beyer, Nathan Fake, Apparat, James Holden the list is endless……
What’s the best thing to happen to you this year?
Going back to college to study music production which I adore.
What’s your favourite tune?
Quite a few to narrow it down to one!…Voodoo Ray – A guy called Gerald, Smokebelch – Sabres of Paradise, Fade to Black - Kings of Tomorrow, Energy Flash – Joey Beltram….
Who would be part of your fantasy crowd?
Mozart – what do you reckon he would think of techno?
Just one look at your diary and you can see your playing all over the place, what gig are you most looking forward to?
I love all my gigs and always get nervous and excited before each and every one. The gig for Twisted Disco will be extra special as it will be the last time I will be at the Cross which holds quite a few memories.
What’s the scariest thing you’ve ever done?
Face my demons
If wasn’t a DJ I’d be?
A chef, I briefly trained in my teens there was definitely a spark pf passion there but the music came first.
