Interview with Twisted Disco Headliners The Beginerz

For those of you familiar with the chart-bothering duo they need no introduction, but for those who are not, here goes. The Beginerz are Def-e AKA Ewen MacNeil and Ibi Tijani. Previously, Ewen had releases on Toolroom, Low pressings and Ocean trax while Ibi worked as a programmer with Rollo of Faithless. After meeting three years ago through mutual friend Stanton Warrior Dom B the pair crashed onto the scene at the legendary Miami music event in 2002 with their first combined creation 'Reckless Girl'.

The prestigious Cheeky records (BMG) picked up 'Reckless Girl' it was left to the U.K public to place it at a very respectable number 28 in the U.K charts. It also enjoyed similar successes throughout the rest of the world.

After remixing the likes of Mousse T, Faithless, Dido, First Choice, Fused, Apollo 440, Bini and Martini, the mighty Mint Royale, and Djing extensively in and around Europe, the duo dropped their next single titled 'History'.

First promoted on their own label Wax Habit, then swiftly signed by fledgling label DTPM, 'History' and took over where 'Reckless Girl' left off. Gaining support from all DJ's around the world, the Beginerz had club smash number two.

Three new Beginerz singles quickly followed. The first, "Doin' me wrong"(Oxyd Records) placed at No.1 in The DJ Magazine Hype Chart and was licensed throughout the world. The second "Everybody Knows" picked up support from Radio 1's Judge Jules and the third, "New York Taxi" (also placed No.1 in the DJ mag hype chart) was snapped up by ClubSole, an off-shoot of Scottish based Sole Music.

As well as their own productions they completed many high profile remixes. These include artists such as Faithless, INXS, Dido, Terri Walker, Phats and Small and most recently the chart topping Shapeshifters.

2005 is drawing to a close and The Beginerz have already had releases on the prolific Toolroom Records, Nic Fancuilli's "Deleted" Label, and Lee Cabrera's SR2 imprint. 2006 sees forthcoming releases on the Shapeshifter's Nocturnal Groove and their own Wax Habit imprint and their confirmed DJ commitments will see them extensively touring Russia, Italy, Switzerland, Slovenia, Croatia, and Poland as well as many UK dates such as the Ministry of Sound.

We caught up with Ewen to see what all the fuss was about ................

You’re playing Twisted Disco last ever night at The Cross in London, What can we expect from you guys?

Great house music all night long.

What have you been up to recently DJ wise? What have you got coming up?

Dj wise, after a summer of travelling we have spent some time in the UK which has been nice. Playing at Fabric has been one of the recent highlights

Favourite club to play in and why?

We have played in so many fantastic clubs it would be wrong to single one out. I (Ewen) have a long running residency in Bristol, my home town, which is great to play at because I get to see family and friends as well as playing at one of the best clubs around. Can’t get any better than that really

What do you think of the UK scene right now?

The UK club scene seems to be pretty healthy at the moment, it seems to go through a slight slump then bang its back again.

What makes a good DJ or bad DJ?

I think its about trying to read a crowd, they are what you are there for. There is nothing worse than a dj that has everything rehearsed and is going to play it no matter what.

Do you feel DJs have to produce nowadays to really make their mark?

It is pretty important as records get distributed into places / countries where you would never think of promoting yourself and you could be the best dj ever but if no one hears you then no one will know you. It also can be seen as your calling card, this is what I produce therefore you get an idea of what we are going to play.

Do you think the Internet has been good or bad for dance music?

It is good and it is bad. It was inevitable that things were going to change and you have to embrace that but I am not sure that it hasn’t de-valued dance music by being so available.

DJs are renowned as having a glamorous life, if I was you for a day, what would be the most disappointing thing I’d discover about the reality of a DJs life?

Generally we try and live as normal life as possible, airports have been the bane of lives though and don’t seem to get better at all.

First record u bought? How did you get into Dance music? If you weren’t a DJ… What do you like to do away from the dance scene?

The first ever record I bought was ‘please please me’ by The beatles. I have always been into music in one way or another. But dance music in its first incarnation got me about 1989, acid house all the way. If I wasn’t a DJ I’d like to be involved in sports in some way as I try to balance out the weekend with a healthy weekly lifestyle

What do you hate? Last thing you regretted?

Hate is a strong word and don’t really hate anything, I dislike taxi drivers beeping there horn outside, weird I know but I find it unnecessary and pretty lazy. Generally I regret that last jack daniels or glass of wine, I think everybody has that the next morning.

DJing comes naturally to you – what are you not good at?

There are too many list, but if I was to name one it must be my dancing. Shocking isn’t the word

Tell us something embarrassing about you?

See above

If you ruled the world for a day, what would you do?

Try and get everybody to talk in a civil way to each other, it doesn’t take much but it makes the day a bit better.

What does the future hold for you?

Hopefully much of the same. Having the opportunity the travel and play records to people is not something we take for granted.

What are your top ten records right now ?

Well that would be telling……..see you on the dancefloor on Friday night and you will find out.
