Chewing The Fat with the Deadly Rhythm DJs

With their unique blend of musical genres, and a rapidly growing reputation of being purveyors of the finest mashup south London has to offer, it’s no surprise that I tracked down the Deadly Rhythm DJs for a few words ahead of the next Chew The Fat! event…..

For those that haven't heard of you, can you sum up who the Deadly Rhythm DJs are and what you stand for?

There’s 3 of us; Gin & Chronic, Databass and Beefcake. The music policy is predominantly house, dubstep, and Baltimore but there’s always a few surprises thrown in there.

Can you summarise what you play in three words?

Big Booty Bass

How does your sound differ from the more mainstream club sounds that many clubbers are used to hearing?

We keep our music policy really varied and mix it up a lot, play back to back, rolling through genres and keeping people interested.

Is there any type of music that you're strongly opposed to and wouldn't play under any circumstances?

In terms of dance music there is very little we definitely wouldn't play. Though we'd probably steer clear of happy hardcore ...

Are some crowds more receptive to the Deadly Rhythm experience than others?

Usually a crowd that likes to delve a little deeper and is not just after the club hits of the moments is the most receptive to our style.

You seem to have a sort of love affair with South London. Do you feel the area is going through a bit of a revival of late?

Well we all grew up in New Cross and Camberwell so there’s definitely a big attachment to South London. There’s always been a thriving music and art community but it has been getting a lot more attention recently. There were nights like Fear of Music, where we saw Death From Above 1979 play at our local pub the first time they came to the UK, but now there is a lot of new blood and good stuff happening in the area. The re-launch of the Amersham Arms has really boosted this and when the East London Line reopens I’m sure New Cross will receive even more attention.

What's been the favourite venue that you've played and why?

It’s hard to say. The strangest was definitely the Proud Galleries as we were playing from the gallery room into the stables and we couldn't see the crowd. We just had to wing it and run back and forth between mixes to see how it was going down in there.

What's your 'If All Else Fails" tune?

Probably Switch-A Bit Patchy. It's a tune that everyone knows and you’re bound to get the hip shake dance.

It's a bank holiday, it's pissing down with rain outside – what three films could you happily sit in and watch?

Withnail & I, The birdcage, The Jerk

Finally….what's your favourite tube journey and why?

The one we do from Kings Cross to South London at 6am in the morning every month after our show at Egg.
