Chewing The Fat with Punks Jump Up...

With a truly astonishing rise to fame exemplified by inclusion on the oh so cool Kitsune label, as well as their own releases and t-shirts appearing everywhere that there is to be seen, it’s no wonder that we’re very excited indeed to have the electronic extraordinaire duo of Punks Jump Up answering a few of our questions ahead of the next Chew The Fat…..

You wear your guitar influences proudly on your sleeve. Do you think the stigma of using guitars in dance music of a few years ago has been well and truly washed away now?

Yeah definitely. It's a question of using the guitar in a clever way, not just add big roaring guitar chords over a house beat.

How important do you think your DIY style has been in shaping you as an act?

Pretty much everything. We have always been into the DIY aspect of pop culture, that's what makes it interesting. What can you come up with with just a computer, a microphone & a couple of spray cans?

In terms of what it means to you, what’s your most significant production work to date and why?

Dance To Our Disco probably because it has really helped us getting our name out there. That along with our Peter Bjorn & John, Gossip & Robyn remixes.

How much has releasing on Kitsune influenced your profile?

A whole lot. It has definitely taken us to the next level.

Are there any particular DJs or producers that you admire?

Loads of people. Everyone from Mark Kamins, Ron Hardy, Prince to SebastiAn, Soulwax & Crookers.

Your web presence uses a heavily stylised appearance to draw the viewer in. Would you agree that style is as important as substance in today’s media focussed world?

Style is very important and it has always been. A great style together with great music is an untouchable combination.

Most DJs/producers don’t have their own clothing range. What was behind your decision to release yours?

For the same reason as above. We wanted to express ourselves in more ways than music, get some really cool artwork attached to our name! Plus the fact that we know a lot of talented designers who should get their work printed on a t shirt.

Can you give us a sneak peek at some of the tunes that will be rocking The End for Chew The Fat?

We kinda make it up as we go along, expect a good mixture of allsorts!

What’s the punkiest thing either of you have ever done?

I ran my own punk fanzine at the tender age of 13. Proper punk! Calling up reggae legend Tappa Zukie to ask him to sing on a track felt quite punkrock!

And lastly……Sid Vicious or Iggy Pop?

Iggy!
