Trance, Hard House and House are all genres you’ve played and you’ve become successful in all spheres. 'The Day Will Come' and your collaboration with Ian Bland as Quake was not only a chart topper but also has become a scene anthem. You’ve since become one of the top hard dance DJ/producers and most recently your Kissdafunk brand has really hit the spot. What do you owe to you longevity and versatility? I use the same template as David Bowie and Madonna in that I continuously re-invent myself. I also have a genuine love of everything I do. Whether it’s trance, house or hard dance I just love making the crowd go mad. It’s what I live for.
Do you ever consider getting back together with Ian Bland (the other half of Quake) to create some more tunage? That’s interesting as Marsha Rae who provided the vocals for ‘Stay’ has done some more vocals for us. The verse is fantastic so we’re going to produce another track together which will definitely have a Quake feel about it. I’m also working on some other stuff with Ian so watch this space.
Clubland is certainly cyclical and it appears to be going through another cycle at the moment where techno, house and trance are doing well, but hard dance not being s popular as it was. When do you think it will be huge again? Hard dance has a fair way to go. It will never die. There is lots of scaremongering out there and there has been a slightly shortage of killer tunes by top producers. But never fear, already there are some very talented guys nuzzling their way through. Jody 6 from Australia being a good example. I'm sure you'll be hearing alot from this talent.
What tips would you give to others wanted to have successful careers straddling two or more genres? Stick your brass balls on and go for it. But also make sure you’re good at it. You’re open to a lot more criticism if you change styles, so you’d better be good at what you do and be prepared for a few knocks.
One of your trademark deals is to cut up people’s tracks and overlay them over other tracks. What are you working on at the moment? Yeah. I’m always working on them. I probably re-mix about six tracks per week, but very few I’ll ever release. One of the biggest one of my mash-ups at the moment is Marmone and Schonberg overlaid with ‘Live for The Weekend’ .It'ss one of the biggest parts of my sets recently; and gets a huge response. I’ve also rebuilt Solarstone’s, Seven Cities with some riffs on Abelton. It goes quite housey with some hard house blasts in the middle. Kim Ayre’’s ‘More and More’ is another track I’ve had great fun playing with recently; as well as my own version of ‘Hunted Child’.
In fact there are loads. The reason I do it is because it makes my sets unique and it’s great fun.
Twisted where you’re playing on 06th March is moving back to its roots as a trance and hi-energy trance party featuring artists who play all forms of trance from hard trance to psy-trance. Do you think this is a good move? Definitely. I personally think trance has a lot more emotion. All my sets are peppered with some trance as it gives music more soul. It’s good to have nights which explores the facets of trance as it’s a fantastic genre which has produced some of the best dance tracks ever.
Many people nick name you Bobby Tee. Who was responsible for creating that nick name? I think it came about when I played at a night called Space run by Chris Handley and Jez and Charlie (Charlie Lyons). It was on a Wednesday night and was undoubtedly one of the best promotions I’ve ever played. I’m not sure who spawned the nick name originally, but it was either Madders from Sundissential or Ben or Barry from Goodgreef.
Are you planning on releasing any hard house/hard trance tracks over the next few months? Well apart from the Quake track I mentioned earlier, I’ve also got another couple of hard dance tracks on the boil. One is called ‘Right Behind You’ and the other is called ‘Holding On’. Not only that I’ve got some house tracks waiting in the wings too. It’s
And finally ….the burning question. Dogs or cats? Dogs all the way. I have a Border Collie, who’s wicked and the sunshine of my life. Thanks to Pink Kitty and Daf for photography www.robtissera.com www.myspace.com/robtissera
