Meet Logic's new residents before Proteus' Revenge

This article is about LOGIC present: "Proteus's Revenge" @ The Fridge in London (UK), Sat 02 Jun 2007

Back in July of 1998, in a small pub in Brixton called George 4th, a group of friends joined together to put on a night celebrating hard dance and from this LOGIC was born. What started as a humble party soon became a revolution in underground clubbing that led the way for other hard house events over the years.

Now in its 9th year LOGIC still stay true to it's hard trance roots with resident as Shaf De Bass, Proteus and Superfast keeping the clubbers dancing till early morning.

Shaf De Bass is not only a resident at Logic but also one half of the men behind Oblivion Recordings home to MDA & Spherical, SQ and more besides. With years of DJing under his belt Shaf has been working with the Logic crew perfecting the sound of the event and the DJs who play. Also one of the people behind Thirsty Thursdays Shaf never has time to bored!

Superfast Oz has been an important part of the harddance scene with over 13 years of experience under his belt. His continual persistence at playing hard dance has shown his passion for the genre. Superfast Oz is also one half of OD404 and runs the successful label Kaktai Records.

Proteus needs no introduction. He is currently one of the most successful DJs in Hard dance having won Best Hard dance DJ at the Hard Dance awards 2 years in a row. He is a crowd favourite playing nearly every big hard dance event here and in Holland, and he never fails to delivery a full, energetic set.

The Logic residency list is already an impressive one, but now added to that list is MDA & Spherical and Sutekh bringing with them their unique styles and sounds.

If you have been living under a rock for the last year or so then you will be unaware of the impact of MDA & Spherical have had on the hard dance scene. With a string of great events under their belt such as Timeless, iLoveHardHouse vs. Riot! In Amsterdam, Innovate and Hard House Academy as well as their upcoming date at Slammin Vinyl’s Sanctuary festival in June is it any wonder they are very quickly becoming one of the most talked about LIVE PA’s in hard dance.

You have played at Logic on numerous occasions but are now official residents, how do you feel?

To be asked to be residents is a fantastic feeling as Logic has always been one of the top events in London and one of our favourites to play at for a while now. It's great to be gracing the main stage now, instead of staring up at it in awe. There is always an awesome atmosphere and clearly loads of effort put into the production. The residency will give us a real chance to develop our sound to suite the Logic regulars and give them exactly what they want to hear.

You've come so far in such a short space in time, what have been your favourite moments so far?

Undoubtedly, the classics PA we put together for Timeless back in February was by far the most enjoyable and most well-received performance we've ever done. Events like that make everything worth-while. Other highlights include playing to a load of Dutch nutters in Amsterdam last year! Those crazy Hardstyle lovers. There was also a time about a year ago where for some reason, every time we went out clubbing, the first tune we heard was one of ours. Surreal.

With festival season nearly upon us and a set at Sanctuary, are there any other festivals you will be heading out to this year?

We are really over-the-moon to have been asked to play at Sanctuary. It looks like it's going to be a great event! We have also been asked back over to Holland to play at the GroundZero festival which is going to be amazing! No-one does festivals like the Dutch. Apart from these two that we are playing at, we hope to visit a few others as well; Glade festival and SW4 are definitely on the to-do list. This summer there seems to be more festivals going on than ever before. Definitely a good thing in our books - let's just hope the sun shines!

Sutekh has also recently become a Logic resident bringing with him his Psytrance sound to this hard dance event, proving that Logic recognise the changing styles now a part of the bigger hard dance sound. Sutekh brings with him his experience from his residency at Antiworld as well as his own parties on a Sunday night ‘Transcience” in Camden.

You are a psytrance DJ with a residency at a, more typically known hardtrance event, how do you feel?

I feel very honured to be made part of the logic team , its one of those nights I grew up going to and partying , so to be made resident is of cousre something very special. It makes it even better being the first Psy Trance Dj to bring this already well established global sound to the hard dance crowd, and allows me to push the more commercial side of psy trance to the more clubby crowd as well, which is of course a good thing for both scenes.

You have worked with some of the best names in psytrance, do you have any upcoming collaborations with hard dance producers? If not would you consider it ?

As of yet I dont have anything 100% commited, as im still trying to get my head around the production side of things. Psy Trance is takes years of messing around , just to get a half decent sound, so I am looking to work with my good friends Sinewave, Metaphase and the rest of the top UK talent at the mo to try and gain some more knowledge, and try and get some of my ideas down. I’ve been trying to get CAI ( Escape from Samsara ) back out of retirement , as he has some serious studio talent , and the legend that is Nick Sentience has asked me to come and get in the studio, so lets see what happens. At the moment things are a little busy but things will happen soon, Sutekh live will come eventually ! Be Afraid Be very Afraid !!!

What are your opinions on hard dance as a scene?

This is a hard one, as I haven’t been to many hard dance nights recently unless I've been booked , The psy trance culture has sort of taken control of me , and with so many parties its difficult to find the time to get out to different events. I also got slightly bored with the hard dance sound; no tracks were grabbing me really. Psy trance just pushes the boundaries of production, and has so many styles and gives the ability to really use sounds and techniques to the fullest. I think acts like X-Noize, Astrix, Eskimo, and Xerox & Illumination are where the future of hard dance lies at the moment. This is what I would call High Tech Hard Trance.

The one thing I have to say about the Hard Dance scene that is very close to me is that the clubbers and people tend to be much more open and really up for it, I can play old psy tracks, I could never get away with at a psy squat, to the hard dance massive, its all a new sound, and you don’t get any of these stupid politics you seem to get with the psy scene. We should all party together , its all about having fun and pushing good music to people to enjoy!,

Thanks boys!! I look forward to seeing you on the 2nd June.
