Nu Energy Collective - Elevate tour at Logic

This article is about LOGIC present: "Proteus's Revenge" @ The Fridge in London (UK), Sat 02 Jun 2007

Years ago the Nu energy Collective showcased their new act at Logic. What ended being one of the most truly magnificent and talked about performances ever at Logic was in fact only the second ever performance for NEC, the first being Pendragon. Since then and after scores of Logic events, NEC has simply taken over London and the UK with their unique style and rampant performances.

Since then the Nu Energy Collective has changed and their sound refined. They have Played out to thousands of people and their fans span across the UK. Although Kevin Energy and K-Complex are both busy on their induvidual projetcs I catch up with them ahead of their Logic Performance where they will be bringing their Elevate tour with them.

Hi boys how are you and what have you been up to?

Kevin Energy - Well, mainly trying to launch my new web sites. It’s been a roller coaster ride of a mission that has gone far over time. Thankfully we are in the very final stages. We will launch next week and I can start getting back in the studio again. Aside from that I’ve been hard at work compiling my Elevate compilation with Phil York. It’s out this week and is getting a great response so far. Freeformation has kept me very busy; we just had a full house party at Hidden and have a massive event planned for Sept 8thn at SE 1. Life’s always hectic in N.E.C land!!

K-Complex - This week I have mostly been making music, working on my repertoire of alter ego’s and finding giant pots of jam behind the DJ booth in Hidden...

Could you tell us a little bit about the Elevate tour?

Kevin Energy - Sure, it’s basically a tour of many UK and overseas events that myself and Phil York DJ or PA at to promote the tracks from our new Elevate CD. We will of course be doing CD and Vinyl give-aways at each event and spreading the vibe as far as possible. We have sealed some great gigs and so far the crowds have been ace. Phil has taken more of the overseas leg of things and has so far done the USA, Canada and South Africa! Nutter!

You played your second ever live performance at Logic years ago, what changes have you made to your live PA since then, and what equipment have you added or taken away?

KE - The PA has changed in many forms. We recently took a bit of a break from the live gigs to focus on the music more. Sharkey is no longer an MC for our hard dance performances so it’s just myself and K Complex on the music and sequencing. We’ve found a new way to quick fire beats and loops and are currently practicing a two lap top set up so we can both work on the sequencing at the same time. We also have a special guest planned for some of our performances but I’m not going to give the game away at this stage.

KC - Tons! Hundreds! Thousands even. As well as replacing our ageing desktop with a shiny new laptop (now on incarnation number two), we’ve concentrated on improving the interactive side of the show, swapping Logic for Ableton Live and investing in a few new pieces of kit: new controller keyboards (with more knobs, very important), a Korg Chaos Pad and a secret weapon that we call the Re-Jamulator.

You are all very busy on your own productions, what are each working on at the moment?

KE - I’m currently getting this web launch in order and have a whole heap of remix and original work to catch up on once I’m done.

KC - I’ve started a few new projects recently, some great hard dance tunes with the likes of Hoopz and Audio Freak as well as working with hardcore legends Vibes & Livelee! I’m also poised to re-launch my digital label, Science Fabric with a stock of enormously uplifting hard dance numbers...

The NEC has played most of the big hard dance events in the UK, are there any events that you still really want to tour to?

KE - There are loads I’d like to see the PA reach seeing as we have sat back on the performances for a while. It would be great to do another Tidy Weekender; I’d like to perform for Storm in Coalville, GoodGreef in Yarm, Sundissential and many more places.

KC - For us I think the summer festival circuit is something we’d like to crack, we’re playing the Contagious Clubwear stage at Global Gathering this year as well as Antiworld's 7/7/07 and WildChild Outdoors, but the real biggies like Creamfields and Glasto still allude us!

How is the Green Man, I remember you saying that he had injured himself on NYE?

KE - Unfortunately he is in a bit of a bad way. He’s still on crutches and will be for at least 2-3 Months. The docs are a bit confused by his condition – they are still trying to work out why his skin is green! Lol – Na seriously – they can’t work out why his leg is so bad so he is undergoing tests with long NHS waiting lists. We all wish him a speedy recovery.

Is there anything we should watch out for at Logic on the 2nd June?

KE- Of course…. some outstanding new music and a brand new way of sequencing that’s only ever been tried once by us. Were taking Thursday and Friday out to practice, so we get it 100% right for Logic. We can’t wait to be back at the Fridge as we consider Logic at the Fridge a home for our PA.

KC- As usual we’re always striving for each show to be as unique as possible, while throwing in some NEC classics at the same time. So get ready for some as yet unheard material and possibly some very silly dancing too...
