This article is about Secret Space @ The Island in London (UK), Sat 17 Nov 2007
On Saturday November 17th, Timo Garcia and Nicky Holloway will headline the Secret Space party at The Island, London's hottest new (literally) underground club. The new little sister of the Space @ The Cross parties, you can expect a fierce line-up, searing house music and one of the sexiest crowds in the capital.
The party also marks the launch of Timo's new tune Magic Roundabout on his own imprint Berwick Street Records. Already receiving huge interest from A-list DJs as well as the mainstream music press, it looks set to be another scorcher from the man who's already dropped such bombs as D Dub - Genesis, Just Get Over It and the Drop and Squeal EPs. Kat from Most Wanted caught up with the man as his plane touched back down in the UK after yet another hectic weekend playing out overseas...
Hi Timo, how are you today?
Just got back from another mad weekend playing in Russia so a little dazed and confused!
You’re playing at The Island on Saturday 17th for Secret Space, launching your brand new release on Berwick Street Records, Magic Roundabout. Let’s break it down…
Yes indeed! Our release parties have become notorious to say the least! This one should be no exception. The single ‘Magic Roundabout’ came out on www.beatport.com last Monday as an exclusive promo and has gone straight up their techno genre chart. The Original mix and Harvey Dawson (aka Trisco / Wonderland Ave) remix are both in the tech house genre and also doing rather well! We got a couple of wicked reviews in DJ and iDJ magazines too.
Have you been to the Island yet? What do you think of the buzz that’s surrounding it and its spanking Funktion 1 sound system?
I’ve not seen the venue 1st had yet but the press shots look very plush indeed and you cannot get better than a Funktion 1 sound system which I'm looking forward to playing my new tunes on!
How important is it for London to have top notch clubs like The Island, especially when developers are successfully killing off some of our most highly prized venues?
It will be a sad day indeed when the bulldozers flatten the Cross, the Key, & Canvas etc so it's very important to have new clubs popping up right now – there are a lot of great nights that will need new homes from January so The Island is a very welcome newcomer!
Are developers evil?
They are bringing a new and hopefully improved landscape to our city so no I actually respect them. It’s just a shame that they obviously don’t have such a soft spot for some of our clubs!
The party is called ‘Secret Space’ and is the brand new little sister of the Space parties from The Cross. What do you think the Secret Space parties will have that the originals don’t, or how do you think they will differ?
Ssshhhh… it’s a secret….
Are you any good at keeping a secret?
Mums the word!
Haha ;) What’s the biggest secret that you couldn’t keep to yourself?
That im not Spanish!
Berwick Street Records is your baby and it’s gone from strength to strength since it started up in 2005. How hard/easy has it been to set up and keep up?
It’s been a labour of love! Lots of fun, hard work and a massive learning curve.
Out of all your releases, which one are you the most proud of and why?
The current release ‘Magic Roundabout’ is the best (the current release always is though isn’t it?!) Other personal favourites have been The Drop and D Dub’s Genesis track.
How do you rate your roster of artists?
We have some amazing artists on the label, some big names and some fast rising new breed producers who are going to be very big very soon!
Cozzy D is releasing a new tune called Cheese Dreams – how the hell did that name come about??
It’s all Cozzy’s idea!! He wanted to name his song after the mad dreams you get having eaten cheese just before you go to sleep… you know the ones ;o)
You’ve got the Laughing Cow on the front of the record – do you think there’s something vaguely sexy about her?
Yeah baby! Don’t you?
Your new track, which is the reason for this whole shebang at The Island, is called Magic Roundabout. What is it about the tune that made you call it after something so iconic?
When I was making the track I kept getting glimpses of the theme tune in my head, not sure why but it reminded me of it.
Did you used to watch the Magic Roundabout? Can you hum the theme tune?
Yes and I loved it…. That and Mr Ben!
Lol, me too ;) Who was your favourite character on there and why?
Dougal and his rather naughty addiction to sugar cubes!!
Do you think the makers of the show were blatantly on one?
Yes – I think there were a few programmes back then that had a whole different story going on at the same time!
Will you be on one at Secret Space on Saturday November 17th, your stunning release party at The Island? ;)
You never know… I might just cut loose after my set!
Wicked Timo, thanks for your time and see you on the dance floor ;)
