The Island Grand Launch - Saturday October 6th - DSI Discovers Felipe K...

This article is about The Island Saturdays - The Grand Launch @ The Island in London, Sat 06 Oct 2007

Welcome discoverer… you have stumbled on the beginnings of one of London’s hottest underground supernights. Hidden away behind the behemoth that is Heaven, tucked away down Hungerford Lane, The Island is a rare flower of musical quality that will unfold before your very eyes, each week layering out another musical surprise. This, ladies and gentlemen, is the night, and This, party boys and party girls, is The Island…

As we witness the Grand Opening of Saturdays at The Island this weekend we decided it’s only fair that you find out a little bit about our resident DJ, our master of musical ceremonies, the mysterious man some like to call Felipe K

Hello Scirocco / Felipe so where do we start, I guess it's best you tell us a little bit about who you are

First and mainly, I'm a music junkie! I live, breathe and sleep music I must admit... If I'm not out playing out I'm at home like a geek on my computer finding tunes, making new sounds on Reason which is what I use mainly for producing and if I'm not doing that I'm thinking about what I can do and how I can experiment and think outside the box to make innovative music. I'm originally from Colombia, South America, however half Italian and have been in the UK for 7 years now. I grew up listening to trance since I was like 9 or 10 and as music evolved I evolved with it. I've been playing professionally for 6 years now and still hold my residency in Bogota (COL) alongside my exclusive at The Island.

My music policy is full on Electro but I always trying to keep an uplifting but underground sound, I like all kinds of music but House music in general is what really does it for me.

What are you up to at the moment?

Apart from playing out on the weekends, I'm spending all my spare time producing and learning tricks as I go along. I've managed to produce 4 tracks so far but I still haven't released any of them as I want to road test them in the clubs before going ahead with
anything. You can check them out on www.myspace.com/djfelipek. Feedback is always welcome.

The Island, are you looking forward to it?

Definitely! I have a feeling its going to be crazy... Apart from really looking forward to playing at the club, I'm also really looking forward to working with everyone who's involved in the promotion as well. I'm also really impressed with what they've done to the place, its looking mint.

Why is London such a great place to go clubbing?

Where should I start...? First of all I think when people in London go out, they don't just go out to look at each other's faces, they go out to PARTY how it should be done. Also in London people are up for a laugh and a lot a people doing that... it's bound to be a laugh. Another thing is all the best DJs in the world come and play in London and pretty much every weekend there is always something going on for all tastes. I could just go on and on...

CD or Vinyl?

CD's. I find it easier due to the fact that I buy all my music online from various music sites and just burn it on to CDs.

Sum up your style?

What I call my style is something along the lines of funky-techy electro but I also play different styles, all depending on what night I'm playing for and how the crowd is reacting to the tunes.

Any productions on their way?

I've produced four tunes so far, none of them which have been released. They're called: Electro Freak, No Way Back, Twisted Mind, Dilated Pupils. They are all quite techy- progressive with the exception of Electro Freak which more on the funkier side. Check them out
on www.myspace.com/djfelipek

Fav DJs / Producers?

My favourite DJ at the moment has to be Danny Howells. Producers? There are a few: Hoxton Whores, Dave Spoon, Jim Rivers, Luke Dzierzek just to name a few.

What has been your favourite gig?

It definitely has to be when I played in Colombia, South America in front of like 1000 people in October last year... The party carried on for the 3 days I was there. It was mad, to say the least!

When you're not playing, what music do you chill out to?

I'm really open to all kinds of music as long as it has a cool tune to it but mostly house music anyway.
