This article is about Shiva at Island (Charing Cross) With Steve Smart(Kiss Fm) and Soul Avengerz @ The Island in London (UK), Sat 23 Feb 2008
The Soul Avengerz are two of the passionate, popular and prolific house music DJ's on the planet - constantly churning out the finest in house. They also NEVER mince their words. What you see is what you get. Straight up!!! We speak to them ahead of their appearance at Shiva's launch at London's hottest nightspot, The Island. Are you ready....???
If you could escape to an Island for the remainder of your days, where would it be?
PAUL: The Maldives.
WAYNE: Waiheke Island in New Zealand. I had the best time of my life there on New Year's Eve just gone. It was awesome - played to nearly 3,000 house lovers. All. Going. Off!!!
Okay, so you're stranded on a deserted Island, who or what would you want to have with you?
WAYNE: Well, for starters, it would definitely not be Paul....(!) It would be my little girl, Maisey, obviously and a couple of brasses to pass the time during the night.
PAUL: My family and closest friends.
What do you think will happen to London's club scene now that The Cross, Canvas and The Key have closed and with the closure of Turnmills a little over a month away?
PAUL: Mate, I can't believe the sorry state of London at the moment with only Pacha hosting house music nights. It's a really depressing time in central London. Hopefully, the house scene will start afresh in the cooler and small venues, like the Island.
WAYNE: The London club scene did not revolve around King's Cross, but good point. I can only talk for my scene. London is in a very bad state at the moment - too many promoters that should not be promoting and too many DJ's that should not be DJ'ing. There are no classy clubs that play quality house - it's all R&B DJ's now playing electro to a pissed-up West End crowd or house DJ's playing some cool / twisted / filthy / dirty / minimal / techy crap. Where did the flambouyant Londoner that knew how to have a good time disappear to??? It's been about the after party for too long and it needs to go back to basics and start being about the music on a Saturday night. Long live HOUSE. Come on London!!! We're meant to be the centre of the Universe when it comes to parties.
So, are you both still fond of electro then?!?!
PAUL: We have never been fans of electro because most of it has been too funk-less (not sure if that's a real word!) We are fans of all things funky - straight up house is where we are.
WAYNE: Me, personally, I love it. I shit myself the other day. I thought I had left the kitchen sink tap dripping and that all my pots and pans had fallen out the kitchen cupboards. But to my horror, my 7 year-old little girl had just put on 'Now That's What I Call Electro Vol. 50' quite loud in her bedroom. She'll be on the ket before I know it. She's halfway there already coz she ain't washed for over a week!!! *LOL*
The dancefloor looks like it's dipping, what single tune do you possess that will ensure the dancefloor begins to rock again?
WAYNE: For the record we don't have 'dipping' dancefloors in Avenger-land but, hypothetically-speaking, it would have to be our new track 'Drop The Bomb' - fookin' mental it is!!!
When's the last time you cried?
PAUL: At a funeral last month.
WAYNE: Getting divorced at the moment - nuff said.
What are your predictions for Miami this year?
PAUL: I'll let Wayne answer that!!!
WAYNE: Well, there'll be loads of spring breakers, loads of Americans, loads of wannabe's, loads of dollars, loads of sun, loads of sex and loads of drugs - should be good again this year!!! Whoopie...(!) Oh, and the Soul Avengerz to have the hit of the conference with their electro rendition of 'The Birdie Song'.....
If you could do one thing to change the world, what would you do?
PAUL: Erm....
WAYNE: Kill Ken Livingston and make my bin men collect my f**kin rubbish, like they are paid to do!!!
And finally, what can the crowd expect of you ahead of your set at Shiva's launch at The Island?
WAYNE: One ugly DJ (Paul), one good-looking DJ (me, obviously), therefore two very talented DJ's shakin the place to the rafters, with the sweet sound of house music. Not your twinkly stuff, just straight-up slammin' house music at its best. As my nan used to say: "It's all about the house music, son" and "The pie and mash".....(!)
PAUL: Straight up house!!!
