EXCLUSIVE: Shiva Interview With FEMI B!!!

Prolific producer Femi B is a VERY busy individual, so imagine our surprise when we managed to find some highly sought-after time to shackle him down to the table and make him talk!!! We have ways, you know?!?! Let the interrogation begin....

You've got releases already out on Pacha Recordings, Peppermint Jam and Positiva, what's coming up next in the Femi B pipeline???

My studio partner (Leggz) and I have just had a new single released on Peppermint Jam Records this week. It's called 'Things You Do' and features the vocal talents of Telana. I'm really pleased with all the mixes and it's getting a great response. It's the Miami Winter Music Conference at the moment and we've been really busy preparing for it. We've done a killer remix of the new Supafly Inc single, 'Be Together' for Eye Industries over here in the UK, a remix of 'Billie Jean' for Big Star Records out of Demark and a remix of Bob Marley's 'I Shot The Sheriff', for Pacha Ibiza as well as our own original production - 'Dance Dance' for Pacha Blue Recordings. Also, speaking of the Miami shenanigans, we've done a WMC promo a remix called 'You Can Do What You Want' for Kappa Records out of L.A. It's shaping up to be a massive year production-wise.

How do you see the nightlife in London changing as a result of the closure of The Goods Yard's clubs and now, Turnmills???

Having DJ'ed in London for almost 18 years now, the recent closures are like losing a home you have been visting for years. I'd been DJ'ing at Canvas (formerly Bagley's) for many of those years and have even promoted my own events at both Canvas and at the Cross in the early 90's. I've had so many great memories of that place - in fact, I think I had the best time EVER in there when Body and Soul took over Canvas for Need To Soul in July 2007. It was magic!! On one hand, it is sad but I also like to look at the positive side of things. It's like a revolving door, when one closes another opens again. Closures like this can often kick start some fresh new openings. I've heard of some pretty exciting new club openings in 2008 - The Island being one of them - so watch this space!!

What did you do for your last birthday?

It was a bit of a weekend affair actually. I love to party. I went to Body and Soul at Canvas - the best night for getting your grown-up-groove-on with friends. The next day was dinner at Nobu London with my partner and then back to mine for a private party where I dusted off some vitage mix-tapes - Yes!!! C90 cassettes!! - Including my prized and extremely rare recording of Tony Humphries: 'Last Night At The Zanzibar, New York' - a legend at work.

When was your birthday?

The weekend of July 29th 2007.

And, how young does that make you?!?!

Old enough to know better and young enough not to care!!

What's the weirdest thing that's ever happened to you in a club?

Beind handed special thermal shoes and clothing, including gloves!! I was told to take a break every 30 minutes of DJing. I was DJing in a club totally made out of ice. Even the table holding the decks was made of ice! That was totally weird. Drinks were hot mulled wine cocktails and frozen vodkas.

What's the best night out you've ever had?

Flying with 15 of my best friends - 'The Feel Real Crew' - out to Rimini in Italy for my 21st Birthday celebrations. We all had a night out at the famous 'Paridiso' nightclub, which is a beautiful club up in the hills. Little did I know that the surprise guest DJing that night was Tony Humphries!! I felt like he was playing just for me. It was magic and I'll never forget it.

So, what's your favourite record of all time?

It's a hard one, but I think it will have to be the celebrated album by Sly and Robbie featuring Gwen Guthrie Padlock. Every track is amazing and it is true masterclass in production of how to put together an album concept. Genius and WAY ahead of its time.

What's the worst gig you ever had?

I did a very short stint at Umababa; a club in the backwaters of Carnaby Street. I really didn't enjoy it. It was one of those 'celebrity' type places full of Kristal-sipping wannabes, rich Sultan's children and posers. I wondered what I was doing there when they really wanted a completly different type of DJ. I'd been offered silly money to put on Britney Spears and J-Lo to order!! I had to leave, I'm really not that type of DJ.

What happened the last time you embarrassed yourself?

I attempted to walk through the 'floor-to-ceiling' mirror in the top floor room at The Egg. Convinced I was in someone else's way, I stepped from left to right apologising! I thought there was another room through there that I hadn't discoverd yet. By the time I realised it was my own reflection, someone had spotted me. OH THE SHAME!!

What can't you live without?

Skecoid - my ginger Tom-cat!!!

Before you were a DJ, what was the worst job you ever had?

I was a clerk at my dad's accountancy firm during a gap year. He really cracked the whip and enjoyed watching me suffer on Monday mornings!!

What was the last record you bought?

The best of Mr Patrick Adams on P&P Records. A classic complilation from a pioneer producer of the original New York disco sound.

Who or what are your musical influences?

From the old skool, I was insired to DJ by the great masters of the summer of love 1988. Mr C, Kid Batchelor, Evil Eddie Ricahrds, Tony Humphries, Mood II Swing and Kerri Chandler. From the nu skool: Thomas Schumacher, Bhooka Shade and Baggi Begovich.

Is there anything unusual about you that we should know?

I trained as a lawyer!

If you had a time machine, where would you go and why?

If I could go back in time, I would love to have a night at the Paradise Garage and sit in the DJ booth with Larry Levan and watch a true master at work.

What tunes have lodged themselves in your record box and refuse to leave?

Phillipe B - 'Step Together' and Jay Cox - 'Safe'; these two records never leave my box as they are guaranteed crowd pleasers. They are both funky house tracks that STILL rock despite more electro or tribal trends that come and go. People ask me to play them time and time again as I am the only DJ that probably has them in their box that night.

And, finally, what can we expect of you ahead of your set at Shiva's next instalment at The Island?

Expect some Miami promo bombs to blow up the floor. I'll also be drooping the Leggz and Femi B Remix of Bob Marley's 'I Shot The Sheriff'. Get ready to sweat!!!

Fantastic, Femi!!! Looks like your're going to have some amazing treats up your sleeve. Miami madness here we come!!!
