This article is about Diverted 1st Birthday With Nolhy's night, CityBeats & Disco3001 @ The Key in London (UK), Fri 23 Nov 2007
So, you have heard a bit from the DJ’s now it’s time to meet the promoters, with only a few days until Diverted 1st Birthday, we catch up with the promoters Mark Farjad, Ben Lyons, Nohl Valbon and Adam Gill as they give us their views on Fridays highly anticipated event, what they will miss about good’s yard and where they see club land going next year!!!!
If you have not sent your guestlist requests to us yet, make sure you get them to guestlist@divertedevents.com before Friday 5pm or get your tickets from here!!!!
1) So guy's, it's not the first time the four of you have collaborated to put on a night at the Key, and the last one was a huge success, what do you think it is that the 4 of you bring together that make the collaboration so successful?
Ben - I'd like to think all 4 of us feel the same about putting event on...it needs to be fun with no attitude and the music needs to make people dance!! I think it's good how myself and Gilly like to take the more underground approach to our music and Mark and Nohly are more interested in taking the funky uplifting approach. At the end of the day, all four of us are aiming for the same thing and although we come from different angles, we end up in the same place - and that's having a good fun, attitude free, party for everyone that turns up!!
Mark – I think the thing that stands out the most, is none of us take ourselves to seriously, and we are all willing to listen to one another, there is definitely no ego’s and that more than anything translates in to our parties. To add to that, all the promoters and Dj’s have known each other for at least a good 12 months, and are all good friends, it’s mates getting together and partying rather than being in it for financial gain. When we get together, the first thing on the agenda is how, do we make this a great party, which it seems a lot of promoters are forgetting these day’s and you see a lot of people sacrificing the quality of the night to improve financial rewards.
Adam - I think the reason it worked so well last time was that in the main room the music was a nice blend of electro and vocal which was amazing and I on many occasions was in the middle dancing away. Where as in our room was a lot darker and gave everyone a choice of different styles of music in 2 rooms. Really looking forward to Friday, the crowd that was down at the last one were wicked and look forward to seeing you all down there again.
Nohly - I think we are all lucky in that we each have a following of friendly, music loving clubbers who create an atmosphere second to none when they all get together. Myself and Mark head the vocal room and it is great to have an eclectic house music line up with Ben and Gilly taking over the 2nd room. Many clubbers, myself included, do not just like one type of house music and to have a variety of genres in one night is a perfect set up. I remember many people saying last time they couldn't decide which room they preferred and others that said they'd never really liked minimal before but were now official converts and vice versa. We're very fortunate to have some very talented DJs who really know how to rock a crowd and with our crowd that certainly know how to rock; it’s an unbeatable combination and a recipe for a great night.

2 ) With goods yard closing on new years' day, what will be your abiding memory of the clubs that we have frequented there over the years?........
Mark – God, where do I start, I have had amazing nights at all three of the clubs. If you asked me to go in to any detail I would have to lie as I seem to have a bit of a cloudy memory, but my top memory from each club would be The Cross – Sonny Wharton, Funky Arch – Renaissance, the whole room was chanting his name by the end of it. Canvass – Dusted back in February this year when Paul B & Stu Hinge made their Dusted Debut, they had the whole crowd in the zone. For The Key, my abiding memory has to be our debut, it exceeded all expectations and I am soooooo happy that we get one more chance to rock the roof off the place.
Nohly - My fondest memories of goods yard are mainly centered around the flashing dance floor of The Key at formulate afterparties in the summer of 2005. It was towards the beginning of my relationship with the house music scene and some of the best and craziest mornings I've ever had. I met many of the people I still go out with now and also first heard Stu Hinge and Paul B and I who I now am lucky enough to have as residents for Nolhy's Night.
Adam - I have some many good memories of the goods yard. My highlights have to be Sunday morning’s at the after party’s so many times I have been in there and lost all my mates. Another is taking Nicola to the key for the first time last year, was a proper random night and always will be remembered.
Ben - I'll have fond memories of all 3 venues on the goods yard for different reasons... From partying at The Cross during my Serious, Type and Renaissance days, to spending many a morning in The Key and on the terrace with the Formulate guys or spending my early clubbing years in Freedom @ Bagley’s (now Canvas). Some memories are hazier than others but most are good!! and I’ll hold them for a long time!!

3) …..and honestly, what will losing the key and the rest of the goods yard complex mean to you and where do you see clubbers heading to next year?
Adam - It is a complete tragedy and still shocked it won’t be there any more. Now I live 5 minutes away from the goods yard am gutted, may have to move now. But I plan to be there for the final time on New Years Day. I think next year a lot of people will be heading South, Brixton and over that side as it seems to be getting a lot busier.
Ben - I will be sad to see the Goods Yard and those clubs go but times have to change and people will move on, no doubt about that. With regards to next year, I think Vauxhall and Brixton will become a lot more popular with clubbers.
Mark - I have mixed feelings really, on one hand, I will miss the clubs dearly as I have met so many close friends there, and it is really where Diverted came from, I met all of the Diverted residents at either Key or the Cross, so it does feel like that is where it all came from, on the other hand, I will be glad as I may get some sleep at weekends now J. As for next year, I think south London will go from strength to strength, Brixton, London Bridge, Vauxhall, you would think are the most likely destinations.
Nohly - I think it will be a big loss as there are some fantastic venues there. I doubt there will be an area like it which has a nucleus of clubs like goods yard has. I think there will be a lot of money pumped into improving the existing clubs in London and I wouldn't be surprised if a new venue was built around the Shoreditch/city area. I think SE1 will become more popular as it is a large venue which can handle the kind of nights we've got used to being at canvas, the key and the cross.

4) Finally, in as few words as possible, what can we expect from your last ever event at the Key this Friday.
Ben - Well, in the DISCO3001 vs CITYBEATS room you can expect our usual high standard of underground music with lots of messiness!! I don’t like to take clubbing too seriously and I like to see everyone having fun... so we will be encouraging that as much as possible. Sambuca anyone??
Mark – Fun, Fun & more FUN, expect Dj’s who play to the crowd rather than for themselves, a fun and friendly crowd that love there music and are game for a laugh.
Adam - Its going to be DIRT!!!
Nohly - Some quality tunes and a crowd who know how to party. I guarantee you'll walk out with a smile on your face and some new names to add as friends on facebook!
