This article is about DnA Presents..... BODZIN 5 Hour Set at The Lightbox with Bigger Than Jesus - Wearebirdwolf & KING ROC @ The Lightbox in London (UK), Fri 19 Jun
“Authenticity is everything – without it everything would appear to be nothing more than a hollow shell”, says someone who has found himself at the centre of the international techno scene since 2006. The passionate musician from Bremen has become a heavy influence for an awful lot of producers worldwide.
It was a logical move to create his own label called ‘HERZBLUT’ in 2006 as he has found the ideal creative framework for his works. His productions have done nothing but raise his worldwide profile even more and he now has the freedom of an individual artist with a worldwide audience.
Stephan’s music is as polarizing as he is, both as a DJ and live artist. But there’s only one statement that holds true for all of his productions: they certainly are of the highest ‘authenticity’.
You can catch Bodzin next month when he leads the line up for the launch night of new conceptual clubnight DnA on 19th June at incredible London venue, Lightbox. Expect an unrivalled musical journey from one of the global techno scenes most exciting, diverse and talented artists.
Hi Stephan, how are you and how has the first half of 2009 been for you?
Hi guys! I am fine and the 1st half of 2009 has been really busy and versatile. I took some holiday in India which was very inspiring, produced a new track called “Mustang” and signed new artists for my label HERZBLUT. I also travelled an awful lot (Australia, Fiji, Miami, Ukraine and all over Europe) !
You first broke into music through composing songs for various theatres, so at what point and how did you discover electronic music?
As a child, I was playing all the cult synths you can think of in my fathers studio and was introduced to the likes of Kraftwerk and co. After a small detour to hard rock and experimental theatre music, I just went back to my electronic roots ;)
What were your early productions like? Who were your influences at that point?
My first techno track was called pulsar, I still have it on tape ;) I was for instance influenced by Humate or Miles Davis.
Which other artists in the scene might you compare your style to and who do you admire?
I really love artists like Marc Romboy who follows his path all-out. Richie Hawtin is a god, I was touring Australia with him and could assist an amazing show in Melbourne. There are lots of damn good people out there, well established and unknown!
You’ve remixed for the likes of Booka Shade and Depeche Mode, with diverse artists like these how do you adapt the recognisable Bodzin sound to fit the tracks?
I just get inspired by the track and try to keep its feeling. The rest is the mystery of creative urges!
What’s been the most challenging track to remix?
Definitely the Depeche Mode remix of “Everything Counts”. Huntemann and I were talking about remixing DM one day, and couldn’t believe it was really happening. We had loads of fun producing it!
What’s the first step you take when entering a studio? How do you go about starting a new production from scratch?
I jump out of bed bubbling over with ideas! Then I drink a coffee or five and just start working!
What production equipment do you finding yourself using most often? Any exciting technological developments you’ve discovered lately?
The Arturia soft synths. And I just bought a Haken Continuum! Its an instrument and a midi controller together with which I can work in a very intuitive way. I love it :D
How are things going with your own label, Herzblut, currently? Any exciting new signings lately?
We are very happy with HERZBLUT. Releases are scheduled until the end of the year with international artists we want to support and the response is petty good.
You are playing in London this month at new night DnA, are you looking forward to the event? What can the crowd expect from your set?
I am so looking forward to playing in London again. I love the city and the party people. They are real freaks! I hope that this new night will do its way ;)
What else in lined up for you this year? Will you be playing much in Ibiza?
I will play at the sonar, the dance valley, the Kazantip Festival and a Mexico/Canada tour is scheduled. From September to November I won´t be available for bookings, as I'll just be spending time in the studio drinking coffee and producing my next album.
