This article is about HotBox - 3rd Heat @ The White House (London) in London (UK), Sun 26 Aug 2007
The competition so far has been incredibly hot, but the last and final Heat looks to be the hottest! HotBox has proved to be the Hottest DJ competition of the Summer so far, taking place at the in the stylish surrounds of the White House in Clapham Common if you have been before you will know why it’s called HotBox. The DJ’s are certainly the hottest DJ’s on the London circuit at the moment, the tune tonnage has been even hotter and all that added to the hot roof terrace action in the sun – it truly doesn’t get much hotter than this!Email inthehotbox@gmail.com for concession entry. Dave Joyce :
No stranger behind the decks all over London, one of his biggest gigs includes warming up the main room at Turnmills for the Gallery, hosting rooms at Carl Cox and Roger Sanchez events, and played sets that many DJ’s would aspire to! He’s head hancho for DrityGroove which has become a household name around South London and his skills and technical ability behind the decks are second to none. Dave what can we expect from you on Bank Holiday Sunday? To be honest I'm not sure what I'll be pulling out for the competition this weekend. I've got a few ideas of where I'd like to take it but it will always depend on what time my set is and what the crowd are like at the time. I'll likely pull out a bunch of different styles to represent what I play at different gigs There's just so much music I'm enjoying at the moment, and a competition set is a perfect place to mash up various styles. I'm not planning on going overboard with technical stuff. The main thing in a comp is to win the crowd and technical ability is not always the best route to that, it's playing wicked tunes!
Coming into this competition you have been ear marked as one of the DJ’s to look out for and potentially go thru to win, also being a local boy I am sure you will have a lot of support behind you from all the DirtyGroovers on the day. Judging from previous Heats support has stood the DJ in good stead to get through to the final! What do you think your chances of going thru to the final are? Well I didn't make it to the last 2 heats so I don't know what the quality of the competition is like! I'd certainly like to be in the final so I'll be aiming to get through in this heat. Hopefully it'll be alright on the night. Finals are always tough as all the DJs are pulling out their top skills, but then it's also more nerve wracking so it can be difficult to do your best. Ultimately I'm always just going to go out there and enjoy myself, and if my set goes down well then I'll know I've done a good job.
I hear that you have a busy weekend that weekend with SW4 and playing afterwards for Twich at Egg on Saturday night and HotBox on the Sunday, any sleep planned in between and will you be able to keep it together for the competition, any stimulants needed? Good question! I'm also going to see Prince at the O2 on the Friday night so I'll definitely be pretty knackered by the time Sunday comes round! I don't function very well without sleep so I'll definitely be hitting the hay on Sunday morning for a kip. I expect I'll be the one ordering coffee while everybody else gets stuck into the cocktails!
Aaron le Doubles :
Aaron at 20, You are certainly the youngest DJ to take part in the competition by a long way, and I hear thru the grapevine that you have only been DJ’ing for close on 7 months, but have managed to secure sets at all the big clubs across London and even feature main room at Ministry of Sound (and apparently you smashed it!) that certainly is a very quick rise to fame, how have you done it? A lot of dedication really and trying to stand out from the crowd, with so many good DJs around it isn’t easy! From getting promos, to knowing your records inside out, reading the crowd, making sure your always pushing yourself, using effects when necessary…so many things, I could go on but I’d be here forever! Basically…attention to detail! There is a lot going on over next 5 months, back at Ministry main room with Kate Lawler and Will Bailey. The Ibiza Experience at Mass, being a resident for there playing with Jonathon Ulysses, Pete Gooding, Gordon Edge and some other MASSIVE names that I can’t mention yet! Stuff with Corona Extra, and also playing NYE for Space @ The Cross closing party I’m looking forward to, It’s looking good for 2007!
I hear through the grapevine that you have something special in store or us on the day and that you intend to bring your EFX unit down to add some thing extra to your set! Any other tricks or secrets up your sleeve, what can we expect from you on Sunday? Would be telling really wouldn’t it! But I do like to use my EFX unit, and if three CDJs are in a club that is enough for me really. Whitehouse is a great venue, for twisting it up a bit! The new sound system is 3 times better than last years one in there. I’ve played there a few times this year, really looking forward to it…but yeah I’ll have a few tricks and things lined-up!
You are also resident for Connected, which is fast becoming a very popular promotion around London, and this has helped spring boarded your DJ career somewhat how did you become involved with Jesse James and the crew? Well a good friend of mine said Jesse was looking for DJs, then I approached him, done a practice set, which went down good and the rest is history! The more and more you play out the more you’ll get recognised, other bookings follow, people take notice. Jesse has given me some great bookings, but it’s also helped for other promoters to see me play. Having a rammed gig guide isn’t that bad for 20 is it!
Thanks guys for your time, we are certainly looking forward to seeing and hearing you at the next and final heat of HotBox on the 26th August. Good luck and may the best DJ win!
