This article is about LICKED - The Valentine's Ball feat. DJ LOTTIE @ The White House (London) in London (UK), Sat 14 Feb
PROFILE ON HOUSE/ELECTRO DJ LOTTIE (Manumission/Space Resident):
Now DJing and producing on an international level, LOTTIE was first inspired in her teenage years at the legendary Haçienda in Manchester. Lottie has since paved a career within all things house and after stepping things down for a couple of years to have a child, she is now back (all guns blazing!), with her edgy electronic style. Back in 1999, after her first residency at Turnmills (RIP!), Lottie won the Sony Ericsson best new DJ award, the Dancestar Best breakthrough DJ award and regularly guested for Pete Tong on Radio 1, before going on to host and reside at Londons legendary MISSDEMEANOURS at The End. Also producing and remixing people from Jamiroquai to Caged Baby, to hot new band A.Human. 2008 saw Lottie land a residency at the MANUMISSION's new home Amnesia in Ibiza, as well as her regular guest slot at SPACE. Lotties favourite clubs: The Mix Paris, Space Ibiza, Manumission Ibiza, Tenax Florence, Sirena Brazil, Digital Newcastle, Stiff Kitten Belfast, Vinyl Warsaw, The Plug Sheffield.
London House promotion LICKED (lickedworld.com) are proud to have booked LOTTIE to headline our Valentine's Ball @ THE WHITEHOUSE (Clapham, London), Sat 14th February 2009. LICKED teamed up with our Electro Room headliner, the lovely LIZZIE CURIOUS, to come up with a set of questions we hoped might give you all an insight into Lottie's world. You will also find 2 links at the very bottom of the interview, for spanking new FREE mixes for you to download, courtesy of Licked’s JASON CHANCE (House) and the lovely LIZZIE CURIOUS (Dirty House / Electro) - Happy reading/listening DSI'ers.......!
INTERVIEW WITH LOTTIE - QUESTIONS BY LICKED & LIZZIE CURIOUS:
LICKED: OK Lottie, to get the ball rolling, let’s start by asking what inspired you to get into djing in the first place?
LOTTIE: I was obsessed with music from a very early age and as soon as I started getting pocket money I used it to collect 7" singles when I was 8 years old. By the time I started clubbing in my teens I became fascinated by the art of mixing and as I already had a bulging dance music collection it was a very natural progression. It was my hobby for years before it became my career.
Q: As a female dj in a predominantly male-orientated trade (djing), did you find this a help or hindrance when you were starting off, and why?
It only became an issue once I was successful and people focused on it for press more than anything, I hadn't really been aware of it until then as I was always surrounded by like-minded music lovers. I'm still baffled as to why there's about 10 male DJ's to every female but I believe that if you are talented and passionate in what you do you will succeed regardless of gender.
Q: What is it that you love most about the UK clubbing scene and about djing?
Clubbing abroad is not as different as you'd expect and it's just amazing how open minded people are to hearing new sounds but what I love the most about us Brits is the humour, that and the fact that we're usually onto new sounds here before everywhere else.
Q: LICKED was launched as a sub-promotion (under the Smartie Partie ‘umbrella’) at the legendary TURNMILLS nightclub in London, where you were formally a resident for both THE GALLERY and LONDON CALLING - both very iconic promotions, at a very iconic club. For all of us at Licked, Turnmills will go down as the club that changed our lives; do you have any fond memories and/or funny stories from your time there, that stick in the mind?
Before I was a resident at Turnmills I was a dancefloor regular at Trade, I remember whole weekends lost there. We would be there Friday night til Saturday morning, hang out with Malcolm Duffy and Kenny C (Turnmills unsung heroes) all day listening to records, and go back there untill Sunday lunchtime.....and then go to DTPM, it was relentless but a lot of fun. I think I once had a nap in the booth when Fat Tony was on actually.
Q: Can you tell us what your favourite gig was at Turnmills and why?
My birthday at London Calling was fabulous, I had loads of my mates with me including my friend Terra Deva (vocalist on Shakedowns "At Night") who sang Happy Birthday to me and the crowd and sound were just incredible, a fabulous Birthday party all round.
Q: What was it like, being resident for the infamous Manumission last summer in Ibiza and were there any particularly memorable moments for you?
I LOVED it being in Amnesia, the main room is a DJ's paradise and it was packed every time I played there. With Manumission you get so much more than any other night and they really know how to throw an unforgettable party. I think the acrobatic vagina was the performance to remember from 2008!
Q: Did you see the new licensing laws in Ibiza (eg the big clubs having to shut at 6am pretty much on the dot, DC10 being closed down, Bora Bora opening later) being both a talking point and a sore point for many clubbers? Did it effect you at all and did you find the morale on The White Isle had changed?
I thought it would have more of a negative effect than it did actually. The nights were more condensed so the clubs were busy earlier because people knew they would be hoofed out at earlier than last year. It made more of a difference to Space because it was a 24 hour club so all the set times were different this year but it was still fantastic.
Q: Of all the places you have played worldwide, where (club and/or country) is your favourite to dj and why?
Ibiza is still number one for me but I also love Tenax in Florence (it's like a cross between Studio 54 and Manumission AND has an amazing wine bar) and La Sirena in Brazil which is surrounded by rainforest next to the sea, very special.
Q: Of all the amazing achievements you have had so far in your career, what are you most proud of and why?
I get asked this a lot and find it really difficult to answer! My biggest kick is hearing my own productions rock a dancefloor to be honest
Q: Of all your productions and remixes, which is your favourite and why?
My new tracks as Dr. Strangelove - "Photograph" and "Banshee"...you'll hear them on Saturday night!
Q: Where can we expect to see LOTTIE in 2009 and will you be back in Ibiza this summer for another season of hedonism?
I'm doing a Manumission tour and yes, Ibiza Space and Jezabel
Q: After having been on the scene successfully for over 10 years, what are your goals for the future?
Now I've teamed up with Pete Martin (from Coburn) to form Dr. Strangelove I'm loving producing again and thats my focus for this year, putting Strangelove on the map! and I think I'll be doing a lot of touring again this year after calming it down a couple of years ago when I had my son.
14th February 2009 sees you headlining for LICKED – ‘The Valentines Ball’ @ The Whitehouse in Clapham, London....so, on the theme of love….
Q: Name 3 producers that you totally LOVE at the moment?
