This article is about The Gallery pres Vaccine @ Turnmills in London (UK), Fri 01 Sep 2006
VACCINE sits down with Marc van Linden, Greg Downy and John O Callaghan ahead of their sets for the massive The Gallery pres VACCINE on Friday 1st September.
Friday 1st September sees The Gallery welcome one of its fast becoming legendary backrooms to host the whole club for a one night spectacular. Vaccine will be taking over the main room for the first time bringing one of the most unique trance line-ups witnessed in the UK.
Started in April 2005 in the Anexo bar of Turnmills nightclub; Vaccine’s aim was to showcase the best trance djs from the UK and Holland, Denmark and the rest of Europe.
In December 2005 Vaccine became the latest signing to the Gallery @ Turnmills, taking over the third room once a month to showcase the very best in trance from the continent and beyond.
The Thursday nights saw DJs such as Ernesto vs Bastian, Simon Patterson aka Dogzilla, Paul Masterson, Michael Splint, Misja Helsloot, Phynn, Goldenscan, Kuffdam make headline appearances alongside a wide selection of young talent, bedroom djs, established residents and stars of tomorrow.
The success of the night saw it move from the Anexo bar into the intimate surroundings of T2 (Turnmills legendary second room) in May 2005 with its monthly Thursday nights attracting over 200 trance fans to witness the stars of tomorrow from all around Europe. Collaborations with the likes of Serious in August 2005 showed how quickly the night had become synonymous with quality and established in the scene as a whole.
The success of the night and its forward thinking vision quickly attracted Danny Newman and The Gallery teams attention and after only nine months Vaccine was asked to work alongside and promote a room at arguably the best night in the UK, The Gallery @ Turnmills.
Vaccine launched at The Gallery in February 2006 taking over the T3 room once a month showcasing the same combination of rising local talent with specialist big name DJs in an intimate surrondings.
September 2006 sees Vaccine take over the whole of The Gallery for a one off special showcasing three rooms of music. This invitation by one of the leading club nights in the world shows how far this promotion has come in such a short space and how far it has the potential to come...come on and join the ride
Ahead of this massive party on Friday 1st September we caught up with three stars of the producers room for one massive chat!!
Enter stage left Marc van Linden, Greg Downey and John O Callaghan….
1.Hey Marc, good to catch up with you, hope you are enjoying the summer? Hey... My summer is quite good so far! Nice weather in germany, i played @ cool festivals, and we had the world cup in germany!! ;-)
2. What you been up to this year, fill us in on all the gossip so far? *smile* Really all? I´ve been in so many different countries... enjoyed all the impressions. I´ve been day & night in my studio... I can´t describe my first half of the year in 2 sentences...
3.You are playing for The Gallery pres Vaccine event at Turnmills on Friday 1st Sept for those who have never had the pleasure what can we expect from you? New productions, new remixes, unreleased Bootlegs,... somewhere between Trance, Techno, Progressive & Tech House...
4.Youve been knocking out some quality new tracks recently what else have you got coming up later on this year that we should look out for? My track with Giuseppe"Until Monday" is out on Vandit, I´m working on different remixes at the moment & my debut album "my way" will be released in october/november.
5. Youre playing alongside fellow producer Greg Downey who youve been producing some tracks with, go on spill the beans and tell us somethign embarassing about Greg that no one else knows? Ha ha haaaa.... he´s a crazy guy! He was in my studio in june and we went to poland together... My newest nickname for him is; MR. IRON!!!
6. Who for you are your top tips in terms of artists and djs who are breaking through into the scene at the moment and in the near future? I think Krzysztof Chochlow will be HUGE in the future... He´s from Poland and I´ve signed him to my label Midway Records. But there are so many talents!!! OMG!
7. Youve got a new album coming up, heres your chance to give it a good plug and tell us all about it all? There are a lot of interesting collaborations on it. I made tracks for example with Martin Roth, Greg Downey, De/Vision, Funabashi, Sandra Flyn,..
8. And finally some quick fire random questions which we always ask, you can take any three people, dead or alive on a weekend out and about who would you choose? Franz Beckenbauer, Sepp Blatter & Pele´!!! ...then we will work out the next World Cup in germany!!
9. For those who may be jetting off abroad this summer where is Mr van Linden's favourite place to go chill out in the world? Hmmm... my favourite place is Los Angeles & Ibiza of course.
10. And finally, whats the most untrue rumour you have ever heard about yourself? Probably... that I´m from Holland!!! ;-)
1.Mr Downey good to catch up with, how the devil are we?
Im very well mate, although ive been feeling absolutely exhausted this week, I find once every 6-12 months I feel the effects burning the candle at both ends. However I am now back on form and ready to rock and roll so all is good and no complaints
2. You’re playing for Vaccine's big one off event at The Gallery on Friday September 1st alongside a load of trance talent, for those who have never had the pleasure what can we expect from the Downey?
You can expect an upfront mix of punchy tech and trance beats ranging from obscene dark nonsense music to full on "see ya later" trance. I like to mix my sets up and energy is important to me so it will be pumping with plenty of my own tracks thrown in as well...
3. You are playing alongside Marc van Linden, John O Callaghan, Lange and many more in the Vaccine Producers room, as a friend of Marc and John's tell us an embarrassing, legal, story about either of em!!!!!?
John O' Callaghan is madly in love with DJ Miss Behavin, although he will need to get his act together. When I was staying in his house he loves nothing more than to relax at home in his pajamas and Homer Simpson slippers cooking his wee rashers, im wondering if the slippers should go before I try and pair them off?
Marc van Linden is the no 1 gay Icon in Poland, all the men love him over there and the amount of advances he gets even though he clearly has a girlfriend is unbelievable.
4. Vaccine is continually searching for the best talent out there, who for you are the new breed coming through along with you in the scene at the mo?
There are quite a few making waves at the moment, Simon Patterson in particular, the guy is on fire and is certainly going to the next level. Sophie Sugar is definately going places, she has had a couple of very strong trance releases and her next track Fallen Too Far looks set to be her biggest yet. John O'Callaghan , Marc van Linden and Sander van Doorn are the others who I think will go to the top, all are making big waves on both the production and DJ front.
5.So tell us a little bit about what else you have coming up this year then?
There are quite a few exciting things going on for the rest of the year, I have my debut at Slinky with Paul van Dyk which will be awesome. Slinky has always been one of the places I have wanted to play so to do it with van Dyk is a great platform for me. Other UK dates include Goodgreef, The Coach, Slide, Electronic Sessions and of course Vaccine.
This year has been the start of some exciting international gigs and I am going to Mexico in October to do a big festival over there, bottle of tequila at the ready! I will also be returning to China and Canada and I am in the middle of sorting out a tour of South Africa so looking forward to those.
I have recently started my own monthly radio show on DI.FM. It is on the second Monday of the month eachtime from 7pm-9pm GMT if you would like to tune in.
6.Your signed to Discover as an exclusive artist what production gems can we look forward to coming from the Downey Studio?
Ive been working on quite a few things over the last few months. My new track Vivid Intent has turned out great, I really am delighted with it after spending so much time on it. Its very uplifting and maybe even a bit emotional but still fucking banging, I couldnt ask for much more when it comes to reactions in a club. It recently made its way onto the new Cream compilation mixed by Eddie Halliwell and has featured on Radio 1 a few times aswell. There will be a great alternative remix coming with it from two of my favourite producers , Giuseppe Ottavianni and Marc van Linden, who will be doing the remix together. This will be on Discover towards the end of September.
I have also been working on a driving dark EP with two new tracks - The Instigator & Jaws. The Instigator, not sure how to describe this apart from drilling. Its a dark trance number that isnt for the faint hearted! Jaws is a techno track with a nice banging groove and some wicked old school stabs. All of my releases so far have been trancey so I wanted to do something alternative, more heads down bangin stuff. They are very new so not many people have heard them but definately look forward to hearing your thoughts.
Myself and Marc van Linden have recently done a new track called "What The - - - - Do You Mean?", again we wanted to do something a little unexpected. The track is quite pumping but more proggy with some electro elements in it. This will be coming out on Marc's Midway label along with my remix of his new track False Sense. The False Sense remix is cool and banging.
7. And what do you say to those who think you look like a member of an Irish boy band, is it true?
Yes it is true, Downeys Dreamboys are now available for bookings worldwide, keep your eyes pealed for the press release..
8. And finally some quick fire questions, what does Greg do to relax away from living the dream?
Sounds crazy but I am at my most relaxed when I am mixing on my decks. Apart from going to the gym I dont really do too much away from my career, I find it very hard to switch off. Although in saying that myself and Patterson are addicted to Pro Evolution Soccer on the PS2, the game is ridiculous. And I would just like to add that O'Callaghan fancied himself as a bit of a player when it comes to this game, saying he is in a different league. He came over here and he was fucking tortured, the guy is shite!
9. Your top three festival survival tips?
1. No matter what, make sure you travel with Game Over. This is imperative. The staff are very well trained in wrecking the place, and we'd like to thank you in advance for traveling with us.... 2. Get fucking hammered, don’t try and do it half-heartedly. 3. Take as many video clips of your friends as possible, these can be a great bribery tool.
10. And what’s the most untrue rumour you’ve ever heard about yourself?
Tom they are all true so believe them!
1. Mr O Callaghan good to catch up with, how the devil are we?
Excellent! I had an amazing weekend here in Ireland at the Hi-Fi Festival. 25,000 enjoying themselves in the sun to bucketloads of boshing trance music - always a good thing.
2. Youre playing for Vaccine's big one off event at The Gallery on Friday September 1st alongside a load of trance talent, for those who have never had the pleasure what can we expect from the DJ?
You can expect a good night first of all. The lineup is fantastic and I can't wait to play. As for my own set I always have something special lined up for big gigs - so your gonna hear some stuff you won't hear anywhere else. It's gonna be rocking.
3. You are playing alongside Marc van Linden, Greg Downey, Lange and many more in the Vaccine Producers room, as a friend of Marc and Greg tell us an embarassing, legal, story about either of em!!!!!?
Haha... god - I'd be strung up! Mr. Downey has some funny stories, he's mad enough as it is but with a crateload of 1664 inside him - let your imagination do the rest. As for Mr. van Linden, he's a clean cut guy.... not!
Thomas Bronzwaer, Sean Tyas & Bryan Kearney, are my top 3 tips. These guys are producing insanely good tracks and their DJ sets are just as slamming. Their gonna be huge, its just a matter of time. Also watch out for Jennifer Rene, she is the new Jes Brieden, except better - amazing vocalist.
I've got my return date to Inside Out @ The Arches which is one of my favourite clubs in the world. I've got a big date at Gatecrasher with Nu NRG & Sander van Doorn - then in November/December hopefully I'm going back to Australia for a tour. In between that I'll be visiting loads of places including Slovakia, Mexico, Poland and Thailand, amongst others!
6.Your signed to Discover as an artist what production gems can we look forward to coming from the Callaghan Studio?
Lots. I'm trying to finish a few new tracks at the moment as part of an E.P. Expect some new twists and different sounds but still with a fat as hell club drive. Then I have my other projects with Armada & Midway - working on some big big club smashers for that. Anyone for bass?
8. And finally some quick fire questions, what does John do to relax away from living the dream?
6 cans of the finest, a large sofa, a good DVD (comedy preferably) and shit loads of unhealthy food. Or a Pro Evolution Soccer tournament with my mates - its all about Thierry Henry.
Stuffing snacks into any space corner of your bag, 24 Nurofen Plus, and plenty of clean socks. A fresh pair of socks can save your life!
10. And whats the most untrue rumour you’ve ever heard about yourself?
That I'm giving up dance music and taking up professional fly fishing as a career change. Ahhh peaceful.
