D for Dzierzek

This article is about Dirtbox in T2 with Luke Dzierzek & Punkrok @ Turnmills in London (UK), Fri 09 Mar 2007

Luke, take me back to the beginning, where did it all kick off for you?

It properly kicked off after I completed my first ever single: One Day / Echo. Before that I was staying up with no sleep for days in the studio and clubbing every week. I managed to get work experience by meeting Nick Liousias at The Loft in Maidstone who worked for Silver Planet at the time, we were both trollied. 2 days later I was in London at the Silver Planet office regularly still going to Fabric, The Key and Turnmills, then I think after all the inspiration one day the music just flowed out of me.

When you started out your DJ career, what was it like trying to make a name?

I've been trying to build my DJ career since I was about 14 years old. I used to play at college do’s, put on my own mobile disco parties and all that stuff. But most of people I played to at the time worshiped garage music, whereas I used to bang out prog /tribal house.. Since then I just did a few DJ competitions such as the DMC under 18’s which i got into the final then just started playing local pubs, then into bars and it slowly progressed. To be honest production helped my dj career on massively.

You’ve recently been touring in Brazil; that sounds pretty epic, tell me what you were up to out there and what did you enjoy the most?

I've just come back from my 3rd Tour there. Brazil is amazing. Every time it just gets better. The scene is developing massively. Psychedelic trance has dominated for so long, but now electro/techy house and stuff like Minimal are rising. Ive been up all sorts out there, but I wont go into detail but I have had proper, proper crazy times... The people and the parties put on are always Awesome.

What kind of music do you listen to when you’re not DJ’ing?

All sorts, not cheesy.. At the moment I am listening to Tom York’s Album “The Eraser”. I like listening to music that is general forward thinking, always like to get the classic electronica out.

Is DJ’ing and production your full time career? Is that what you always wanted to do for a living? If not, what did you want to do before?

I am lucky enough that it is my full time career. I have been dreaming to do what I am at the moment since I was a little spotty teenager (with glasses I may add). I can’t think of anything else, I never have. I always believed that If you work hard enough and put can the time in things will happen.

Were you a DJ that started producing, or were you a producer that decided who started DJ’ing?

Funnily enough it both happened around the same time. But ive always been making music.. My mum showed me picture holding a guitar when I was about 3 years old cause that’s what I asked for from good old Santa.

Do you support new talent?

All the time, as much as I can. I know how hard it is to break into this industry. If I can ever help someone who has the talent and the pure passion for the music then I am always happy to.

I hear you have left Clubclass, what was it like working with them, and where are you going from here?

That’s right, it was a good experience. I got to play at there events in Maidstone and MOS /Turnmills in London alongside DJ’s like Zabiela, Sander Kleinberg, Danny Howells Paul Woolford, Paulo Mojo, Nic Fanciulli etc.. But I felt it was time to move on and do my own thing, my own way. All I can say is I have a exciting major project in the works and all is to be revealed in the next coupe of months.

What future goals have you set for yourself?

To many to list here, but I plan to keep going no matter what. The music is what drives me and I try to drive the music.

What should Dirtbox expect from you and how much are you looking forward to it?

Expect to here some new productions of mine in the set and a progression from the sound I am usually known for. I am looking forward to Dirtbox bigtime. T2 is a wicked room, the vibe has always been awesome. I can’t wait to play and get involved.

What was the most mind blowing experience of your career to date?

When I heard Sasha play 3 of my records in one night at the Brixton Academy After Party from South West Four and witnessing the reactions. It was well and truly immense!

What are your plans for the summer, you off to Ibiza?

Summer time I am going to be playing Europe allot, an concentrating developing my new project.. Last year I was mainly in South America, Brazil is like the new Ibiza for me, its MENTAL!

Who gets your respect currently, in terms of music production and DJ ability?

Nick Liousias, he’s an awesome DJ, and I can already see some great potential in his production work for the future.

What can we expect to see from your DJ and production wise in 2007?

I’ll be playing more frequently in the UK, mainly London and Kent.. A residency.. Also some tours abroad. Production wise, expect at least 6 new original tunes from me with a number of remixes. Expect more!

Finally, what is one record (not necessarily House) that you wish you'd produced?

Sasha – “Xpander” its so lush, takes me into places of the unknown…

After hearing luke play on numurous ocassions (mostly for Club Class) i can definetly back up all the hype behind him, he is without a shadow of doubt a guy who has gone from strength to strength over the past few years, one highlight set i heard him play was at Renaissance last year where he followed the almighty James Zabiela, all i can say is to make an impression after JZ is one thing but to completly smash the fuck out of it is another, the set he played was awesome and oozed quality in bundles.......plus he wacked out a load of lovely prog as well. :-)
