DJ SUTEKH - RAISING PSY STAR IS MAKING HIS MAIN ROOM DEBUT AT PARTY PROACTIVE!

Introducing….. DJ SUTEKH

Here at Party Proactive HQ we are starting to get the feeling that your night would not be complete without us providing you with an instalment of the very best lazer thrashing psychedelic trance. Allow me to introduce DJ Sutekh, a regular face in the booth at events such as Transience and Antiworld and we think he’s just the person to to give us some sweet dreams on Kiss, Kiss, Fright Night!!

Welcome to our colourful world of PP, first up I’m interested to know where the name Sutekh came from and is there any meaning behind it?

Hey nice to meet you guys ,I came across the name stumbling through a book on ancient gods Sutekh comes from eygyptian mythology and is another name for the god ‘Set’. Sutekh was a god of storms and disorder and actually has quite a dark side. I believe its been used a few times though as another house dj/ producer uses the name along with a death metal band but I kinda chose it due to the ‘disorder’ fact about the god ..heheh I like to cause a bit of chaos and disorder on the dancefloor!!

You have been around for a fair while now and have played with a variety of genres, but at the moment you seem to be best known for your Psytrance sound, how has your sound evolved and what producers are influencing you at the moment?

Yes , I have been dj’ing now for nearly 10 years I guess , and have played so many styles from hard trance / techno and of course psy trance. I always love the trance sound and for me psychcedlic music brings so much to your mind. A picture paints a thousand words and psy trance can really take the listener on a journey. As far as producers go, a few killer acts really doing it for me at the squats are E-jekt, Zen Mechanics , Compressor , Xerox & Illumination , AMD , Headroom, where as Astrix , Eskimo , CPU , Painkiller and good for the hard dance crowds. Im also really loving the filthy electro sound at the mo, I have another project underway with this so keep your ears peeled for ‘ the wonky badger ‘ haha

Having experimented with such a variety of genres, how did you come to find Psytrance as your main style to play out?

I think the quality of production and the huge range of different styles of psy trance has really been the main factor, plus ive always had a psychedelic edge to me , its not just a music genre , it really is a way of life. There is such an amazing community with psy trance and brings people form all over the globe together in a way I cant find with other forms of dance music.

Psytrance is in itself a huge genre with a myriad of artists producing a multitude of different styles within the genre, how would you describe the type of Psytrance you play?

I have many styles to play depending on where im playing and what time, you know a good psy dj should be able to adjust. I would play a totally different style at night to say the day time, and a squat party needs a totally different sound to say a commercial hard dance night, and I have different psy I prefer to listen to at home than I would play as well, but im getting a real kick rocking it the night time slots with some ‘uber high tech driving turbo twisting psychedelic injected power trance ‘ I have in my bag.

A lot of Psytrance acts are now using live mixing programs such as Ableton Live, what do you think are the benefits or disadvantages of using such programs compared with the traditional DJ setup, and how can it affect your creativity?

To be honest I have not really had the chance to use ableton yet , I can see the advantages of being able to completely change exsisting tracks and mixing up tracks together , but I personally do this beforehand anyway using Cubase / cool edit. I re-edit a lot of tracks, take out the bits im not keen on , or add more samples and loops etc.
I think I will always love mixing on decks, im not too keen on just clicking lapton buttons in clubs , looks a bit boring for the crowd, I like a bit of entertainment on stage !!!!

DJing is a pretty challenging business, and only the strong seem to really last in the industry, how have you managed to become a regular main room inhabitant and keep your diary packed with parties to play at?

Hehe, im not entirely sure with this one, I like to entertain the crowd and tend to get a bit crazy on stage ,so maybe this has something to do with it. Im also a party person as well you know , im out most weekends even if im not playing at a lot of the psy parties ,helping with promotion and organisation as well as just having fun with all the psychedelic family, the more u put in the more u get out I think. I just love the scene and try my best to keep it thriving at all levels.

Psytrance has recently been infiltrating the rooms of the hard dance scene as well as having its own thriving underground scene, where do you see the Psytrance scene going and what future plans do you have for yourself within it?

Well there has been such an explosion of psy parties here in Uk at the mo , the underground scene is still strong , and because of the nature of psy trance and the differences between the underground and commercial sound, I believe there will always be that underground scence. I think is good the hard dance scene has taken note of the more commercial psy sound , for me hard dance started to sound repetitive and boring , and compared to the high levels of production and sound of psy , it was only inevitable that the style would cross over. Its good to see forward thinking , but the underground will always live !

Thanks Mr Sutekh, and we look forward to hearing you at Party Proactive on November the 3rd!
