This article is about Kinky Malinki - KISS GOODBYE TO TURNMILLS @ Turnmills in London (UK), Sat 01 Mar 2008
1. You are part of a huge amount of talent coming out of Holland right now. What is your thought's on the Dutch scene and it's dominance and who is one of your tip's for greatness, apart from yourself of course!?
The Dutch dance scene is basically really into one same kind of style, which is not the bigroom house sound but more almost poppy/tribal kind of beats and deep house beats combined with again poppy slick rick vocals. Especially Fedde is into this and I think its great and I really respect him! When it comes to my style, I will say my style is more influenced by the bigroom sound and has also a lot of Swedish influences. I like to work with big vocals from people like Jocelyn Brown or Barbara Tucker and also the all time classic house vocals. My tip, apart from myself of course hahaha, -- well at the moment I really like what Rene Amesz is doing. Dark housey beats with progressive sounds, its really HIS sound and I like to combine it in my sets…to keep it fresh.
2. Obviously everyone knows of the moniker the Swedish House Mafia for Axwell, Ingrosso and the rest. What name would you give to you and your fellow country men? When Franck Roger played for us he strangely came up with The Goodfellas for him and his French fellas?
Wow, this is hard haha. I think the biggest disappointment in the Dutch dance scene is that Dutch people don’t really like to work with each other, which is really a shame. Its like nobody wants to share their success with someone else, because they are afraid of sharing too much credits to the other one. But a name huh, hmmm let me think…”The Buena Dutch Independent Social Club” lol
3. When I was playing at Pacha, London some time ago I had the unfortunate experience of my CD skipping like mad on the huge breakdown of your "Take Me Higher" track. I embarrassingly cut quickly to the track in the other CD player. Have you had any similar situations? Or if not what's the most embarrassing situation to happen whilst you've been in clubland?
Well, this is a funny situation, because I had the same experience when I was at the radio station in Liverpool, City FM. I had an interview there and the guy was like “….okay and now we gonna listen to Mischa Daniels biggest hit called Take Me Higher…” the beat came in as normal but just after the huge breakdown the cd went dead!!! No music, there was silence for like 10-15 seconds on the radio…because the radio jockey and I had a lot of fun there …so quite a late reaction haha…But I also hit the stop button once accidently at a party, I think it happens to every dj so once in a while. It was such a crazy setup with a crazy mixer that I got confused what was what -- so yeah, that was quite embarrassing.
4. You had Natasha Hamilton, who was a third of Atomic Kitten doing vocals on the reworking of Take me Higher now entitled "Round and Round". Were you aware of Atomic Kitten before she done the vocals? And if so did you think she was the best looking out of the bunch?
Yes I knew her by name and also that she was a member of the kittens. Ministry of Sound already pointed that out very clearly as well. Well the best voice is always hard to say, because you never know how its gonna sound at the end. I knew the songwriter of Britney Spears was behind it, so I had quite some confident in this project, because both of them are great artists and gained lots of respect in the scene.
Of course there were some other big singers in the scene I like very much, like Abigail Bailey, Jocelyn Brown etc. But because the package was already arranged I was like, lets do this and we will see. At the end, it really went out very well in the USA. The Round and Round track entered the national Billboard Dance Chart which is really hot for us Dutch people and its still in there for a few weeks already. So now all of a sudden a hot off shore dance site by New York Times is gonna do an interview with me as well…
5. You are sponsored by clothing brand Gio Goi. So I'm assuming you have a keen interest in fashion? What's your favourite item in your wardrobe? And what other sponsors would you love to have and why?
Well, to be honest, I’m not THAT into brands and fashion as people might think. Gio Goi did ask me and I knew the brand, but when I saw their clothes I was really enthusiastic. My favorite item is now my jacket by Gio Goi. Its so warm and fits so well, it almost feels like custom made for me !! I would love to have a sponsor like Steinberg/Cubase because I work with their software and its really amazing what they deliver all the time. So hopefully, If someone reads this from the company, please hit me back because I’m always seeking for new plugs and sounds!!!
6. With the popularity of Mischa Barton in the celebrity circles have you found yourself confused with being a woman, from name alone of course, not quite literally!?
To be honest yes, a few promoters thought in the first place, that I was a girl by name. But now , cause of myspace etc they already know I’m a boy. But still, it sometimes happens. I just need to become a bigger celebrity than Mischa Barton and all will be fine haha….or maybe even better, just date her and the press will explain the rest lol.
7. What can the Kinky Malinki regular's look forward to in your debut set for KM?
Well, lots of own mash-ups with big vocals, own hot and tight beats and of course the latest fat tunes from all over the world. All mixed in a way of Morillo style, because I really adore what he does as a dj!
