1) The George Morel name is steeped in history and you've achieved stuff some of us could only dream of, like getting 4 gold records and 1 platinum record. What has been the happiest moment of your DJ/Producer career and are your special discs actually vinyl but just painted gold and silver?
Before I received my first gold and platinum records awards, I used to wonder myself about what they are composed of, but sad to report that they are just painted gold. The seal of certification is what confirms them as genuine award sales. However, as the curious George that I am, I did take one of the award discs apart to find out...and I even managed to put it all back in one piece (that was a scary one). Now as far as the happiest day of my DJ/Producer career must be the first time I heard one of my records playing on the radio, it was an indescribable feeling of accomplishment that fueled my motivation to go further. Since then, I have had many amazing turns in my career and have certainly been blessed to have the greatest job in the world. I love my job!
2) At Kinky Malinki we have often favoured established DJ names like CJ Mackintosh and Lenny Fontana as we feel that the years of experience behind the decks makes them very dependable. Why do you think guys like yourself and the one's I've mentioned are still doing the business where so many have fallen by the wayside?
Years on the decks certainly sharpens the skills needed to be a successful DJ such as in reading the crowd and feeding off their reactions according to the sound and vibe etc., but to be totally honest DJing is something that has come natural to me. I stay on top of the current sounds and merge it with my own style, and I have been fortunate to be so accepted around the world.
3) Probably every DJ worth their salt has a Morel's Groove record in their collection. You went up to Part 11 and Part 4, which featured one of my fav's Bouncing Sax, along with the now seminal classic Let's Groove. Am I right in saying that those two cuts were only really intended to be bonus cuts on the 12"? And can you tell us a bit more about Morel's Groove Series?
First of all, THANK YOU and every DJ out there for making "Morel's Groove" part of your collection. During that time, I began to make tracks all day long... and most of the nights too. The next thing I knew, I had too many tracks sitting around so I decided to start releasing some of them under the name Morel's Grooves. When I create my grooves I normally stick to the original ideas, as they always are the ones to have the most feeling. For example in "Let's Groove", I finished it in 30 minutes. I never expected it to become so massive since my plan was to eventually re do it and spend more time adding to it, but instead I ended up using it as it was to fill that 12" release.
Making dance Music is like a blind date you never know what will come out of it at the end of the production night ;-)
4) You were once an integral part of the old Strictly Rhythm set up. What are your thoughts on it now it has been resurrected under the wing of Defected Records?
Thank god for having Defected/Simon take it under there wings in order to bring it back. What made Strictly Rhythm in the past was all the hard work and effort Gladys, Barry and I put into it. Seeing Defected put in their efforts is reassuring knowing it would still keep it's image and not destroy something I had a lot to do with. But I do wonder why my name is never mentioned in any of there interviews. Credit should be given when is credit is due ;-))
5) On your myspace you state that you like cooking and a nice bottle of Vino. If you were to knock up a dinner, accompanied by a cracking bottle of wine for one lucky KM clubber, what would it be?
Oriental, Italian or Latin?
If Oriental is the choice, I would serve oven roasted black cod over dehydrated spinach with a touch a my sweet miso-based dressing and bottle of Riesling wine.
For the Italian dish, nothing tops penne cooked aldente over a white wine and cream sauce prepared together with garlic, fresh clams, peppers, a touch of tomato, parsley and onions (make sure the clams are cooked in the wine). Great with a bottle of a chilled smooth Pinot Grigio.
As for my latin meal, I would serve good old spanish white rice & black beans with sweet plantains accompanied with a nice grilled skirt steak glazed with chimichuri sauce and a large glass of MOREL's Colada (White Bacardi Rum, Pineapple juice, sweet coconut cream milk with my secret ingredient of few scoops of HAGEN DAZ vanilla ice cream, did I mentioned if you double the BACARDI you are sure to get lucky!! Sorry no wine on this one.
6) We first got talking when you had been booked for a counterfeit Kinky Malinki promotion in Austria. I guess it's hard for someone to actually pass themselves off as George Morel but have you found yourself a victim to bootlegging or anything similar in your years in the game?
It has happened few times in the past. I recently had a club give away a CD Mix I did 4 years ago. They made the promotion look like if I was going to be there with the CD cover art work but under the fine print it was only a CD give away. Sad but true.
7) One of your recent releases is called "Sex Girl", now being a Married man you obviously can't comment personally but do you have any amusing anecdotes from a 'friends' experiences with a Sex Girl?
As a matter of fact my wife was part of the inspiration for creating it ;-) "Sex Girl" came from a very simple fact that I have always noticed in the clubs. A girl flirts with a guy/girl and at the end of it all is always about a good F@#%!! that's where the inspiration for "Sex Girl" came´from ;-) My wife is also an amusing 'friend" of mine (sorry honey for being honest), haha.
