SMARTIE PARTIE's farewell to Turnmills!

This article is about SMARTIE PARTIE's farewell to Turnmills! @ Turnmills in London (UK), Sat 08 Mar 2008

SMARTIE PARTIE says farewell to Turnmills!

“What can I say about the closer of Turnmills... quite a lot actually, am I sad? NO, because I know that when this great club closes its doors & plays that all emotional last record, it will be done with the kind of grace and respect that we wished Muhammad Ali and so many other great fighters had done.

Strange analogy you might think, but hear me out, Turnmills really is (not was) in the same league club wise as these great champions.

They are part of history and there name will live forever. Turnmills is up there with Paradise Garage, The Loft, Twilo, Studio 54 and Hacienda (I was lucky enough to have also been involved with as a Percussionist).
But Turnmills is so much more than just a club – it’s the rock of London and quite simply no other venue comes close.

Turnmills means so much to so many people and in my opinion the reason it’s so special is simple - Danny Newman and he's incredible team.
Dan (who I consider a great friend) is a Promoter first and everything else falls in line. By this I mean any Promoter that is lucky enough to get a shot at promoting Turnmills can’t spring any surprises on Dan because he’s done everything any promoter has done, and probably done it first and better and he see's past Bullshit. He judges you on results, yes he puts you under pressure and so he should, but when SMARTIE PARTIE was given the chance to Promote a "one off" event at Turnmills (5 years ago) I had to re-prove myself despite coming off the back of a 5 year residency at Ministry of Sound.

But this meant nothing, we (myself & Claire my Lovely girlfriend) were now being offered a chance at Turnmills and believe me we shit ourselves!! As I’ve said, we had been at Ministry every month for 5 years and were incredibly successful there. But it’s true we were in the comfort zone! We were moving on and up to Turnmills and had to re-prove our ability.

To start with we were offered a co-promotion with City Loud, but we did it properly and blew the place to bits! After this I had a meeting with Dan, I wanted a monthly and our 7th Birthday was coming up! Dan put his Promoter hat on and listened to what I had to say. I had just proved myself the proper way (no bullshit) and we got the go ahead despite many world famous brands trying to get on the Turnmills roster.

SMARTIE PARTIE had the main ingredient i.e. a massive loyal following and now 5 years later, we’re still the biggest regular outside promotion at Turnmills, smashing record numbers every single month.

In Nov 2007 we had our 12th Birthday and on March 8th we big say "Farewell to Turnmills” for one last time before searching London for a new residency to take its place (is there such a place). Will we be sad... Fuck yeah, I lied.
R.I.P TURNMILLS.

LONG LIVE SP.”

I cant say anything else that everyone else hasnt already!

But I'll give it a go!

Cannot..thats right CANNOT, wait for this, buzzing already! Infact buzzing isnt even the word, but it will do!
I've been hunting high and low through my record collection, (and songs soon to be added to my record collection) to get some extra SPecial tunes ready for March....Its going to be a partie like no other, As always with SP.

It's been a privilege to play at Turnmills, and a bigger privilege to do it for SP. Always such a good vibe, great music and amazing like-minded people, which combined allows for a brilliant night!

Its been wonderful to meet so many nice people, with plenty more to meet!
SPecial thanks to Trace and Claire of course for everything so far!

Rave.In.Peace Turnmills

Long Live SP - Who will undoubtably move onto bigger and better things ( Just look at the calender of SP events already for 2008! :-O )

what can i say, the best night i had in a long time, friendly crowd,

Thanks Nick & Buzz ( as always a True SP Legendesssssssss )
Last night was always going to rammed , there were people queuing from 9pm ( not seen since last Harrods sale )

And the queue continued till 4am , with 2000 people lucky enough to get inside , there were always going to be casualties & we are sorry for the 100's that just could not get the magic ticket, we have been saying for a Month , please get there early , the rain came down like the great floods of the Bible! yet there was no stopping the determined , nothing in London would come close to this night! & you all did SP & Turnmills very Proud , we were pretty close to the highest ever recorded numbers @ this very SPecial club , i believe only Trade have had more people! this means Smartie Partie are part of the Legend that is Turnmills ( nothing can ever take that away now ) And Smartie Partie will continue to fly the Flag & move onto the next stage in the ongoing saga that is Smartie Partie, ive said this many times Yes Turnmills is/was? amazing but People make clubs & SP has the power in its ample arms to move even further along the road to ongoing Amazing sucess that we have had for over 12 years, we never think we are the best.....but you lot are , we will welcome your continued support in our next venture , because we all hold the key to open "THE FUTURE"

SMARTIE PARTIE "THE NEXT CHAPTER"

SMARTIE PARTIE have spent 12 years building there brand into the monster it is today! Which included a 5 year residency @ Ministry of Sound, where we became one of their most successful ever outside Promotions. Before moving on & up to the amazing Turnmills, where for the last 5 years we have smashed all records every month & in the words of Turnmills owner (Dan Newman) “Smartie Partie are our favourite ever outside promotion". These kind words have inspired us to take our hugely loyal crowd to the next stage in the ongoing forever evolving SMARTIE PARTIE story!

SP have been aware for many months about Turnmills closure, but we had to bite our lip & carry on doing what we do best & that was to keep ramming this amazing venue until the final dance. Armed with this knowledge of the closure of Turnmills this gave us plenty of time to think long & hard about where to spread our wings for the next chapter in the history of SP.

The Scala was the obvious choice for us, already an established live music venue, having hosted gigs for the likes of, Kaiser Chiefs, Foo Fighters, Franz Ferdinand, Goldfrapp, Scissor Sissters, Jamariquai, Joss Stone, Robbie Williams & more. Being in good company this vast 4 room venue was the perfect blank canvas for SP to make our stamp, alongside several other House Events already featured throughout the Saturdays there. This brilliant diverse venue gives us the opportunity to be creative & the scope to bring you something different.

Saturday 5th April, SMARTIE PARTIE. The 1st floor will feature Mr Ibiza "Alex P" playing Funky House & Club Classics alongside Jaxon, Wayne Eldridge (Clubtown TV) & Parliament of House. The 2nd Floor, this huge main arena will be fully theme, dressed in SP's spectacular Tour dressing, used in venues such as Privilege (worlds largest club). Music will be Driving Tech House with a tinge of Electro. Making his SP debut Dj Mr C (Superfreq records) plays alongside Steve Smart (Kissfm), Lisa German (Trade / Dtpm), Alex Miles (Bora Bora), Matty Wells, Jessie James B2B Johny Bloomfield , Folklore three, Tomo B2B Johny Morrish + Trace Percussion/fx & SP Tour Dancers. 3rd Floor will be Hosted by LICKED who will play pure Electro in this sumptuous Glass-room over looking the main arena. 4th Floor SP Favourites Pete Dee, Ramone, Chris Biscuit, Miles Weaver, Ross Mason & Craig Rock B2B Jon Vamp (Street Dj's TV) will be playing an eclectic cross section of All Things House , we welcome Twisted Sounds, and that completes THE FULL SP!

We will be showing the Farewell to Turnmills footage on big sceeens @ Scala

Prepare for something very special, the next chapter, that is the Legend, that is... SMARTIE PARTIE.

PLease add Buddies & lets all walk into "THE FUTURE"
