Hi Jo. Having been a successful DJ for the last 15 or so years, you’ve taken a step into promoting, with your night NUDE which you co-promote with Terry Hart. Can you explain the concept behind Nude?

The philosophy behind Nude is "what you see is what you get". We are all born into this world equal, with nothing to hide, nude, filthy, beautiful and loved. Nude is as much about outrageous, quirky avant-garde performance as it is about contemporary first-rate music. Terry & I wanted to incorporate our backgrounds in Theatre, Fashion and Dance into Nude and this is what we did. We have performers, or the Nudist Colony as they like to be known. They are a gang of freaks, performance artists, professional dancers, strange oddities and general fashionistas that aim to shock as well as entertain. Naked trapeze artists and androgynous dancers writhe and twist their way around a mixed crowd of cool fashion kids and music lovers alike. Team these with a cutting edge music policy, unrivalled resident DJs and some of the biggest named guests in Techno, House and Minimal and we have one hell of a party on our hands.

That all sounds like quite a show, but what inspired you to do it?

Terry & I had wanted to do a night together for years. When I finally had time in my busy schedule and when the scene in London started to pick up again, it had gone through a big slump in my eyes, we hatched a plan to put on crazy, fabulous parties with really good underground music, that people of all shapes and sizes could come down, get dressed up or down, and go for it. We wanted to inject a bit of fun and insanity into clubland I guess.

It all must be hard work. Do you and Terry both decide on DJ’s and performers together or do you both have your own allocated roles to fulfil?

Well we both decide together but I choose DJs I like and go over it with Terry then I do the booking. Terry knows all the performers and tends to know which ones he wants, we also hold auditions where we both choose who we want. We work together very well, not set roles as such we just do what needs doing. As Terry is in London he tends to do all groundwork for UK parties and I do the same for the Ibiza parties.

You’ve just mentioned Ibiza and I know you’ve taken Nude elsewhere around the world, where have you visited and how well did it go down?

We have hosted Nude parties in Ibiza, which was fantastic, it all came together really well. At first the crowd were a little bemused, especially when our pig on ice skates came out in a velvet suit in 30 degree heat! But they all got into it and when the sun went down it all went nuts! It was amazing when our aerial artist Empress Stah did her show, completely naked covered in gold glitter, as she performed all the glitter fell onto the crowd, it was magical.
We have also hosted a party in Zurich, again the crowd didn't quite know what to make of it at first, then once they get going they love it. It was pretty crazy in Zurich as we only had half our performers. Some had let us down or were in hospital yet we still managed a great night though, we are going back again at the end of April.

Going back to Ibiza, I know how successful last season was so will you be returning there again this season?

Oh yes indeed! We are doing a few parties at Space again, this time inside where we can really go to town. We’ll also be doing free beach and villa parties. We have some seriously fabulous events planned including a massive birthday party for a certain rock star in a rather large venue in Ibiza.

Are there any plans to take Nude elsewhere around the world?

Yes, All over the world really, Asia and Oz, god know what they will make of us. We are doing a party in Copenhagen in June.

You’ve got a warehouse party coming up at the end of the month, can you tell us what to expect and what made you chose a warehouse?

Our natural homes are places like warehouses, beaches, castles etc. Clubs are great but these are the type of venues where we can really go to town. We chose this particular warehouse as it’s a great space right in the east end of London. It has 2 rooms and a killer sound system. It’s not too grungy but feels very illegal. I’m going to be doing Transistor Kill Live, and joining me on the decks will be our resident Mazzy Supastar, Canadian Techno master Mike Shannon, and Luciano Esse from Italy. Anyone who’s heard any of these guys will know that this will be a sick underground soundtrack to what we know will be a really fabulous night. Our theme this time is Victorian Circus Freak Show! We’ll have a few performers entertaining the crowd, Johnny Woo will be up to his usual tricks, snake and belly dancers and freaks in Perspex cages. We’ve also got the Nu Rave club kids hosting the second room, it’s going to be pretty crazy.

You’ve just mentioned you’ll be doing a live set as Transistor Kill at the warehouse, what’s that all about then?

It's me on decks and effects and my production partner, Pete Gleadall, on Ableton live, freestyling with effects, keyboards, sounds, whatever we feel like really. Our vocalist, Babara Alcindor, is this petite black French singer. She’s gonna freestyle on the mic as well as perform our latest track. She is not a diva more like a cross between Eartha Kitt and Grace Jones, sexy, sultry and edgy. It will be a raw live experience

Sounds like you’ll be putting on quite a show, something we’ve come to expect from Nude. But what does the future hold?

Great amazing things we hope, as I said we want to tour worldwide. We are also in the process of producing a TV show, kind of a fly-on-the wall/behind the scenes look at how we go about putting the night on, and an insight on the DJs’ and performers’ lives. We also want to do our own night in Ibiza in 2008 and we are doing a t-shirt line. There is a lot of other stuff in the pipeline but I can’t really go into it.
