Patrick, what first got you into the music scene and what influences did you draw upon?

I've always been into music since the age of twelve.
My dad had what we call a sound system and we use to play at house parties and blues dances.
As for influences, it's in my blood, its been what I've been destine to do.

Why did you decide to become an MC and not a DJ?

I used to MC with an outfit call Funky Express with Mikey B.
I got drunk and I liked what I was doing, it made everyone laugh, so I thought why not!
When we decided to change to Top Buzz and the acid house thing,
I found it hard to mix and was a bit of an embarrassment,
but deep down, I knew we had a secret weapon, my MCing.
That's why I changed, after all I love poetry and I challenge a man to say otherwise,
as I won two international poetry competitions.

How did Top Buzz come about?

... It was a new direction that was needed in our lives.
We had been doing Funky Express for at least 7 years.
Believe you me, we cleaned up on that circuit!
I went to acid house and told Mikey B what I was experiencing,
he came along and Funky was history.
We met Jason at a rave and we formed Top Buzz.
... And I mean we were Top Buzz in every aspect.

Apart from Jason and Mike, who did/do you enjoy
MCing for the most and why?

Believe you me; I'm not into the free lancing
as my voice is not strong. I don't MC to others.
It's not a disrespect thing, it's a throat saving method.
You have got to remember we where doing up to 14 gigs a week!
But my favourites are Grooverider and Fabio, only if they ask me too.
I don't jump up and MC to every DJ, if I'm asked I will do it.
People like Ratty, Micky Finn, Donovan Bad Boy Smith,
a couple more who would ask, it's down to respect.
I respect all DJ's but I can't MC to all

What is your favourite tune(s) to MC to ?

All of them, but I stay away from jungle, I can do it but
I see myself as the first environmentally friendly MC -
I want everyone to hear me and understand what I'm saying.

Is there anyone within the scene that you haven't
worked with that you would like to?

I don't mind working with anyone, as long we are both on
the same vibes.

When did you first coin the phrase "Jungle Techno"?

The phrase "Jungle Techno" has unlimited depth.
It was the way the music was going.
When the jungle beats started to roll in on the scene,
the music had a bit off both in it.
You still had your certain elements of hardcore in it.
So, you would have the rolling beats to make you move your bottom half
and the techno element to move your head and fly.

Where did the name Van Kleef come about?

Lee Van Cleef was a bad man.
We have a Chinese friend called Bollinger.
He looked like Lee Van Cleef, so I would give him shout outs.
Most of the crew had monikers.
