Interview with the incredible M.A.N.D.Y

This article is about Saturday Sessions with M.A.N.D.Y @ AREA51 in Manchester (UK), Sat 14 Mar

Undoubtedly one of the finest venues in the North of England, Manchester’s Area 51 celebrates its first birthday this March with a truly stunning line-up of parties covering the whole house, electro and techno spectrum. With a fresh new booking policy that has seen kings of sexy underground grooves like Circoloco and Freak n’ Chic host hedonistic parties at the venue recently, and the likes of Hot Chip, Mr. C, Layo & Bushwacka and Sandy Rivera all set to appear in the coming months, Area 51 is about to take its reputation to the next level.

And following in this incredible new standard of bookings, the 14th March sees headliners M.A.N.D.Y and Heidi from Germany’s groundbreaking, cutting-edge electronica label Get Physical.

It's not often that two people discover a friendship as special as the Berlin-based creative duo M.A.N.D.Y. (Patrick Bodmer and Philipp Jung). Two kindred souls drawn to one another at a young age, throughout their many harmonious years of acquaintance they've shared complementary callings in life. And now, after a stream of massive productions M.A.N.D.Y have firmly conquered the techno scene and remain one of the biggest names around today.

So what have you guys been up to so far in 2009? What’s the craziest thing that has gone on?

WE TOOK 6 WEEKS OFF AT THE BEGINNING OF THIS YEAR TO WORK ON OUR FIRST LIVE SHOW, SO WE'VE SPENT A LOT OF TIME IN THE STUDIO WORKING HARD. IT'S BEEN GREAT TO BE WORKING ON OUR MUSIC LIKE THIS AS WELL AS ENJOYING LIFE IN BERLIN, WHICH WE DON'T GET TO DO TOO OFTEN!! WE HAD OUR FIRST LIVE SHOW IN SCOTLAND ON THE 25TH FEBRUARY AND IT WAS GREAT - 800 PEOPLE GOING MAD! I (PHILIPP) HAVE BEEN PLAYING A LOT OF GIGS IN AND AROUND GERMANY WHICH HAS BEEN GREAT - A NICE BREAK FROM THE LONG HAUL FLIGHTS BEFORE WE HIT SXSW AND COACHELLA!??

Although you’ve been working together for many years with much success, it was following your massive hit ‘Body Language’ alongside Booka Shade that brought you to the ears of many more people, was this a crazy time for you? How did the song get started?

THERE WAS NO REAL CONCEPT BEHIND IT. WE ALWAYS TRY OUT VARIOUS STUFF AND WORK FROM LEFT TO RIGHT AND BACK. IF YOU LOOK AT THE BPM OF THE TRACK E.G. IT'S 130! THAT IS NORMALLY A PROPER TECHNO SPEED. BUT IF YOU LISTEN TO IT, IT APPEARS AS A TOTAL HOUSETRACK. SO NOT REALLY A CONCEPT. WE HAVE AT LEAST 195949 SONGS IN THE DRAW OF UNRELEASED SHIAAT.

For anyone who isn’t familiar with your music, how would you describe the vibe of it in a nutshell?

NOT SURE IF THERE IS A NAME FOR IT, BUT IT'S IS VERY SIMPLE AND HAS GOT A VERY STRAIGHT FORWARD ARRANGEMENT. SO IT IS AN EASY ACCESS TRACK, BUT AS ALL THE SOUNDS ARE VERY CAREFULLY CHOSEN, YOU CAN LISTEN TO IT MANY TIMES WITHOUT GETTING BORED. ?

Who are you hero’s DJ wise? Who has really inspired you to keep playing and learning over the years?

TO BE HONEST MAINLY OURSELVES. AS WE ARE TWO PEOPLE, WE HAVE ALWAY PUSHED EACH OTHER. WE'VE SPENT DAYS AND MONTHS IN OUR LITTLE RECORD ROOM TRYING ALL KINDS OF STUFF. FOR OUR COMPS, WE WERE TAKING AS MUCH TIME AS OTHER PEOPLE WOULD TAKE FOR AN ALBUM.?

What’s the most insane thing that has happened to you since you began playing together?

WILL TELL YOU WHEN WE'LL MEET IN PERSON... %-)

When you tour all over the world, the different music scenes must have really unique aspects to them, where is the most obscure place to play and why?

THERE ARE MANY OBSCURE PLACES, BUT THEY ALL HAVE THEIR OWN CHARM OR SPECIALTY, AND IT'S ALWAYS A CHALLENGE TO PLAY FOR PEOPLE IN THESE PLACES AS THEY HAVE A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT BACKROUND MUSICALLY. IT'S SOMETIMES REAL WORK, BUT THAT'S WHAT MAKES IT INTERESTING. FOR EXAMPLE WHEN YOU GO TO A CARIBBEAN ISLAND, DRIVE FOR SOME HOURS AND END UP IN A PRIVATE HOUSE IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE, A THOUSAND PEOPLE WAITING TO GET CRAZY, THAT'S SOMETHING VERY EXTRAORDINARY. WE LOVE IT.??

Germany has an incredible reputation for amazing music, particularly techno, what do you think to the music scene in the UK compared to your homeland?

YES THE TECHNO SCENE IN GERMANY IS INCREDIBLE AND A LOT OF PRODUCERS ARE MOVING THERE AT THE MOMENT FOR THIS REASON. YOU ARE ALWAYS SPOILT FOR CHOICE FOR DJS TO GO AND SEE, A LOT OF PEOPLE THAT ARE REALLY INTO IT DON'T GET MUCH SLEEP THAT'S FOR SURE! THE UK SCENE, HOWEVER, SEEMS TO OFFER MORE VARIETY WHICH IS REALLY COOL. IT SEEMS THAT IF YOU GO OUT IN LONDON, FOR EXAMPLE, YOU ARE SPOILT FOR CHOICE WHETHER TO GO AND SEE A REALLY GOOD BAND, OR TO GO TO A DUBSTEP NIGHT OR TO SEE A GOOD HIP HOP DJ PLAY. DON'T GET ME WRONG WE DO HAVE SOME OF SOME CHOICE IN BERLIN, BUT IT'S NOT QUITE THE SAME, BUT, YES, THE TECHNO SCENE IN GERMANY IS 100% UNIQUE!

You are playing this weekend at Manchester’s newest and one of it’s coolest underground clubs, Area 51, what do you have planned for your set? Any surprises in store?

IF I WOULD TELL YOU NOW, IT WOULDN'T BE ANY MORE SURPRISE I GUESS! I LOVE MANCHESTER. IT'S ALWAYS A GOOD CROWD!?

Where will you be heading when you’ve packed up your records, bed or partying?

GOOD QUESTION. HOPEFULLY TO BED AS I HAVE TONS OF STUDIOWORK. PATRICK AND ME ARE PREPARING OUR LIVE SHOW AND HAVE STILL A LONG WAY TO GO. BUT YOU NEVER EVER KNOW IN THIS BUSINESS.?

What else do you have going on for the rest of the year, will you be around in Ibiza much the coming season?

IBIZA WILL HAPPENING FOR SURE. AT LEAST 1-2 TIMES. BUT MAYBE NOT TOO MUCH MORE AS WE HAVE BEEN THERE SO MANY YEARS, AND THERE'S A LOT OF OTHER STUFF TO SEE AND PLACES TO PLAY. BUT IT'S ALWAYS GOOD TO COME BACK THERE AND HANG OUT FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS.
