Interview With Ian M

This coming Saturday 28th June 2008 sees the second installment of Sin:ergy’s monthly residency in Manchester. Ahead of this event Sin:ergy caught up with the man headlining this event and their very own resident Ian M.

For those who have not had the pleasure of yet seeing Ian M here is some background information on one of the true Godfathers of Hard House:-

Ian M The DJ

For eight years in the ‘90s, the Leicester prodigy played a central role in the success of the most important after-hours club in British dance music history, Trade, the most influential club in the annals of hardness. Having cut his teeth in his hometown for several years towards the end of the 80s, the DJ world’s God of thunder got his first big break when Trade offered him a slot on a tour date in Birmingham. The rewarding residency which followed at the London club’s home base in London gave Ian the challenging task of playing after the lord of the dance Tony de Vit, one which he pulled off successfully week after week.

The fruitful relationship with Trade afforded the Godfather of hard house a number of memorable career highlights. These include playing to an audience of 250,000 at the Love Parade in Leeds, teaming up with Danny Tenaglia at Twilo in New York and headlining Dance Valley in Amsterdam alongside Carl Cox.

The punisher’s more recent successes at the epicenter of the hard universe are as notable and widespread, as his much-admired residencies at Sundissential, Insomniacz, Storm, Twist, Sin:ergy, Fuel and Insekt testify.

Worldwide demand for his dynamic DJ sets has taken Ian to France, Hong Kong, Ibiza, South Africa, Washington, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

Ian compiled and mixed the biggest-selling volume of the Trade album series, and has also released a host of superb compilation mixes for Tidy Trax, Fevah and Torture Garden.

Ian M The Producer

As a creator of top quality tunes with high production values, Ian has never been described as prolific, but when he does deliver a new tune it tends to be an event rather than just a record coming out. Who can forget the phenomenal global hysteria surrounding his timeless masterpiece ‘Crazy Pills’ when it first appeared? Prior to that landmark outing, a string of unforgettable classics had cemented his reputation as a most outstanding music maker. These include two remixes of Dyewitness for Tidy Trax, his famed ‘Black Is Black’ remake for the same label, the storming singles ‘Annihilation’ and ‘The Dreamer’ along with hard-as-nails treatments for top labels such as React, Tripoli Trax, Elasticman, OVD, Kaktai and Mohawk.

Ask any hard house DJ to cite their influences and you can bet that Ian M is near the top of their list, and his pervasive influence shows no sign of waning.

Sin:ergy
So Ian how long have you been DJing for then?

Ian M
5 Minutes

Sin:ergy
Where/What was the first club/venue that you played?

Ian M
Can't remember, 5 minutes is a long time

Sin:ergy
What is your favourite style(s) of music/Djing?

Ian M
Anything good

Sin:ergy
What is your Proudest DJing experience?

Ian M
I've got a few proud moments like playing to 250,000 people on 'Trade' stage at Love Parade, Leeds or playing to thousands at 'Dance Valley' or playing at the last 'Trade' event at Turnmills.

Sin:ergy
What's your most embarrassing DJing experience?

Ian M
And I've got a few embarrassing moments as well, like playing at various 'none' gigs on NYE 2000 when nobody came out cos of overpricing for events. One of the gigs (in Birmingham) had me playing Hard House to a Drum n Bass crowd. Whoops!

Sin:ergy
Quails egg in aspic jelly with mange-tout and watercress sauce delicately aided by the finest of table wines or fish, chips and mushy peas washed down with a popular brand of carbonated soft drink?

Ian M
Both, Quails Egg as a starter & the fish & chips as a main course

Sin:ergy
God is, if you believe Maxi Jazz and his pop/fusion combo ‘Faithless’ (yes, I’m well aware I’m probably gonna get my arse kicked for that), a DJ. Which DJ, past or present, was/is your ‘God’?

Ian M
As you know, there are many gods in today's society, so my selection goes like this:- Malcolm Duffy (cos when he's good, he's brilliant!), obviously Tony de Vit (being mates for a few years, I got to learn a lot of things), Carl Cox (for being such a down to earth & nice chap) & Adam Beyer (for throwing up different styles of wicked music & actually getting me to boogie on a Tokyo dancefloor one time)

Sin:ergy
Top Shop or Primani (Primark really but if you merge the names Primark and Armani, you get Primani and it does sound better than Primark)?

Ian M
Sorry! Don't do either cos they don't do clothes with the 'extra gusset' expansion pack.

Sin:ergy
Who would you say is your favourite Producer?

Ian M
Jimmy Page

Sin:ergy
Favouritest ever Record/mp3/track?

Ian M
Anything by Led Zeppelin & Rollin Reptiles by Nutrogen

Sin:ergy
Favourite chocolate out of a tin of Quality Street?

Ian M
All of them! Have to get in there before Dom hogs the tin.

Sin:ergy
What is the most expensive set of headphones you’ve ever shelled out for (and cost)?

Ian M
Brought 10 prs of the original Technics RP-DJ1200 from Tokyo some time back because I'd heard they were discontinuing them in the UK. They cost around £60/£70 per pr in a Tokyo superstore & off the shelf! Plus I've got various Sony & Technics headphones which I use either in the studio or at home.

Sin:ergy
How long did they last?

Ian M
Still going thru' them at present, blown about 3 or 4 pair & have given a couple of pairs out to close friends.

Sin:ergy
What colour are the undergarments you have on right now?

Ian M
I think they're a pair of white knickers with the matching bra set. I'm in competition with Dom to see who can buy the cheapest knickers and he's winning at the moment!

Sin:ergy
If you ever won an award for DJing/Producing, who would be the first person you thanked in
your acceptance speech and why?

Ian M
I'd probably thank my mate Peter, who has stuck with me from the start and thru' thick & thin,no matter what has happen

Sin:ergy
Are you looking forward to playing at Sin:ergy (delete as appropriate) YES / YES
(or you may insert another answer!!!)

Ian M
Of course I always look forward playing to the Manchester Krew, they are so crazy & mad. Also look forward to Dom's special Coffee & 'Bitch' Session Mornings. It's like being on the Paul O' Grady set. She tries so hard, bless her! So everybody should support her because Manchester would be a dull place without Sinergy being around

...END

Note from Dom (Lord K): You're Fired! lol

You can catch Ian along with a whole host of DJs this Saturday @ Sin:ergy Jabez Clegg, 2 Portsmouth Street Manchester.

Just to put the record str8... I am not in any sort of 'who can buy the cheapest knickers' competition with Ian (and If I was, Ian would lose as my undergarments are the finest money can buy..., and I dont like quality street... so Ians comment about me hogging the tin is bollox lol... Hotel Chocolat.... well thats a different story entirely.

See ya all on Saturday
