Out of Order goes Slinky preview with Amo from the Tidy Boys (9th Feb)

This article is about Out Of Order goes Slinky @ Venom in Newbury (UK), Fri 09 Feb 2007

Hey Amo thanks for the interview. Of course it’s been all change at Tidy Towers with you leaving to move onto pastures new last year and. Do you think the move has affected your DJing partnership at all and how strange was it after working together for so many years to now only be working together behind the decks?

Yes it has affected us in the fact we see less of each other, but not changed our relationship in anyway. Andy has been busy with his Education projects for about 18 months now and only dedicates so much of his time on the brand, he has a small team of people who deal with the day to day running of Tidy anyway. So with Andy concentrating on his business future its only fair that I should be able to branch out and do my own thing too (Amo set up his own creative design company called Motel Red in August). We both still have fun behind the decks and it’s our release from the day to day stresses of our other businesses, DJing was always meant to just be a bit of fun… and its still is.

You are clearly still rocking things with the Tidy Boys B2B. How do you work things in a set, is it one on one off or do you chop and change according to how you feel? Do you plan any elements of your set?

We pride ourselves on never planning a set, we do make it up as we go along, it wouldn’t be much fun if (like some DJs do) we plan out every link and the full set. Sometimes I hand Andy tracks that clearly don’t go together just to see how he copes and add spice to the set. We always play two on – two off.

What’s the strangest reaction you’ve received when dropping a track before?

Has to be when we drop the Christmas Coca-Cola track – Holidays Are Coming, even when we play it in the summer it still goes down a storm… the kids seem to love, we only dropped it once for a laugh and included it in our Tidy Boys Live album from Tidy Weekender 2 – maybe that’s why its so popular…

Have you ever thought “these guys are gonna boo me off stage if I play this” yet played it anyway? If so what was it and how did it go down?

Well we do take risks occasionally and have played some silly stuff, even now during the Andy Farley mix of Funkdory’s ‘Goodtimes’ track we cut into Westlifes version of Mandy – it’s a piss take of Marcel Woods track which drops the Arctic Monkeys – proving that anyone can just cut and paste part of another track into a tune and people like it.

What’s the best Tidy tribute outfit you’ve ever seen worn by a fan?

We have had so many over the years, I always remember one girl just having two tidy stickers on her nipples and nothing else, but the ultimate respect goes to those who don the Tidy tattoo, true dedicated Tidy fans.

With the digital revolution the demise of vinyl seems ever closer. Of course with TidyDigital as an online medium you’ve looked to change with the times. Without wishing to sound morbid how long do you realistically think vinyl has left? And do you see a time close by when you will only issue digital releases as a label?

Yes the end is close for vinyl – it will always now be a specialist collectors item, which will make your current vinyl collection worth a lot of money in a few years so hang onto it… but we have to move forward, as sad as it is the digital revolution is the way forward – however we NEVER play MP3s out only WAV files – the MP3 quality even at 320k is not good enough on a loud system.

What’s your plans for Ibiza 2007 and how was the last season for you?

Last year was excellent – boasting the second busiest night in San Antonio behind Judgement Sunday which has been running a while now. This year we plan to be Extreme Euphoria vs.Tidy residents at Es Paradise on a Tuesday night, playing most weeks.

Production wise what’s your favourite tune that you’ve made (I’ll allow any Jive Bunny tunes here as well ;) )? I vote for Hyperlogic – Only Me. I still play the Stimulant mix out when it suits the set time and the night ‘cos I love it!

Hyperlogic - Only Me will always be close to our hearts as without that track we may have never set up Tidy Trax, but our remix of Artemesia Bits & Pieces is still a firm favourite.

Of course it’s Hard Dance Awards time again. This year they’ve upped the ante and the venue is the mighty Brixton Academy! What do the HDAs mean to you?

Awards don’t bother us personally as we don’t DJ as our main profession, like we have said we do it for a bit of fun… however its great that these awards take place to let the industry know that our scene is a strong one and has been for over 12 years now – it’s good to see people getting a well deserved pat on the back. By the way the DJ Mag Top 100 Poll is complete wank and no one should take that seriously.

Secondly what do you feel about the recent news from Queen of Clubs that they are removing Proteus from the line up as he wasn’t playing in the main room (given he has won the awards for the last 2 years in a row)? There has been some fierce debate on message boards over this and it’s quite a controversial topic but I am genuinely interested in your thoughts?

We try not to get to involved with DJ politics; it might sound a bit flippant but it doesn’t really come high on our list of worries… Proteus is a great DJ and a really nice guy, it’s a shame people are getting upset over this.

I believe Madders christened your “the Tidy Boys”. Are you actually tidy though?

Well, he did used to shout this to us as we entered the room when we use to go clubbing at Sundissential – but we had already done some productions for other people on our label and credited ourselves as The Tidy Boys and The Tidy Girls long before any of us DJ’ed under that name…Tidy anoraks check the back of some early tidy sleeves…

Finally, you are playing at Out Of Order vs. Slinky on the 9th February at Venom in Newbury. What’s the most out of order thing you have ever done?

I’m really looking forward to the gig in Newbury as its my birthday that day… so it could get a bit messy – the most out of order thing I have ever done was to completely soak Andy’s bed with water in a hotel room in America, and waited for him to get in and then ring my room to get angry – he did get angry and swapped rooms and made me sleep in the wet bed. Don’t think he has ever forgiven me for that one – at least it was water and not piss.

Thanks Amo!!! Happy Birthday for Friday.
