I've just had an email to say that, yes, Venom has finally closed.

Apparently it will undergo a refurbishment and reopen but will no longer be called Venom.

Big ups to the Mighty V... the place where I first discovered clubbing, grubby disease-ridden women and cheap booze at the delicate age of 15!! It was also the first place that I DJ'd at and was the home to the first Thump event with Aquasky + Broadbeatz...

Massive shout to a decade of clubbers, DJs (yes, we know some of you played the same tunes week-in, week-out), Bar Staff and monkey-doormen - you shall be missed!!

A well overdue refit and re-launch, could this be the start of something big in Newbury alongside Cuba if they can shake off the stigma of Venom?

tbh if they just listend to everyone that went there they wouldnt be in the trouble they are "get a refurb" but the punters idea doesnt matter does it!!!! lol

its where we launch FIERCE as a bigger event and its amazing what some drapes and banners do and the atmosphere was brilliant.

shame really because ti was a good club, and its not gona be a ngihtclub anymore after the refurb....

Unfortunately, in my opinion, the problems stemmed from the owners of Lakeside not being willing to really push Venom into a new era.

Towards the end, Venom was veering dangerously close to a Phoenix Nights style venue!! 'Ladies night' etc...

yeah thats what i was trying to get accross lol, it stupid could have been a good club we did try when we worked there, but if it ment spending money b4 making any they didnt like it!,

Couldn't agree with you all more, that place has given me an i've given it many years of service, iv some propper memorable times in there and some hard, spangled nights at work!! Loved em all!!

Bring on the re-furb.....should now be called 'Fierce', with new headliners each month an an all the Fierce residents each week....oh yeah!!

Think we worked out once that we'd each spent around £7k on booze in Venom over about 5 years...

I mean, they really havent got a clue. For years they have tried to go up against Liquid and why? Why would people go all the way OUT of town to do something EXACTLY the same as those in town?

They should either give up the ghost of put in the investment and make it the best damn underground club in the south of England (outside of London)

It would be a good start to put toilet seats and locks on doors though.

Congratulations to Venom for givng me something to do when I couldnt be arsed to do anything else and for having NOT a clue about the clubbing business.

I've only ever been to Venom on specific DJ nights, 4 of them in fact.

2 drum n bass (the first of which was one of the heaviest nights that Newbury has ever seen IMO), 1 fierce (the black n white party) and obviously, what was one of the best nights if my life - The Hoxton Whores.

These events had their ups and downs, but the tunes wer always fucking amazing.

I do thank Venom for these times.

i worked for venom for years and must say the old days were the best and i loved it.
However veiws change - i will not air these veiws as last time i jokingly did i got banned and do not want to risk this again. Anyone who knows me will know what i think.
However if they really work hard i think the new place could do well but it would have to be totally oppersite to venom to shake the tag! I know many ppl who wouldnt even go again even with a refurb due to the bad reputation. I wish the club luck and lets hope it amazing!

I have heard a new sports bar is on the cards BUT who knows....... I'm sure rumours will fly until the re-opening. Even I will be sorry to see the cheesiest club around go :-) Toni xx

To be honest though, unless they can come up with a convincing reason for people to get a bus away from the rest of Newbury's nightlife, it'll stay dead.

There's jus too many options in Newbury these days methinks...

Mate, it's sometimes hard to get people to get to come to the other side of TOWN, let alone drive all the way to Thatcham.
