Calvin Created Disco..

I can only picture the huge grin and thrilled look on SONY BMG bosses faces as 22-year-old Calvin Harris slapped his debut album on their desks, written, played and produced almost entirely single handily. Such in a way, which would have put most record company departments into an unusual, obsolete status of boredom -Brainstorming for ideas this self promoted and media conscious scot hasn’t already thrown into the success mix.

Ok so that may have been a bold statement…but his embracing attitude of social portals such as Myspace and Facebook deserves much credit. The title of Calvin’s debut album “I CREATED DISCO” is an equally bold and enterprising gesture for the young talented producer, and lends the thought…

Does the vital key to today’s musical success lay with countless acceptance of facebook friends, combined with stamping a cyberspace footprint bill gates would be proud of?

Stopping to think about such questions or evaluate his musical and chart success doesn’t seem appropriate for him, not when his album is a fine collection of up-tempo and catchy electro clash come disco hits that according to Calvin himself “have very little meaning”. Despite his rapid chart topping pop excursion, which has seen him remix and work with the likes of Kylie and more recently British rapper Dizzee Rascal, Calvin’s output is never short of the quirky electronic harmonies and mainstream disco beats he cleverly creates.

With a recent successful BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix firmly under his belt he proves he’s equally comfortable behind the turntables in a club as he is sat concocting number one pop hits on his bedroom computer. Having supported Faithless and Groove Armada on huge tours in some of the worlds best clubs there’s no question that what he does isn’t confined to supermarket loudspeakers and your mum’s car radio.
