With its past saturated by the greats - from Dylan to The Doors and Hendrix to Leonard Cohen - the Isle Of Wight Festival is one of the most historically rich and, therefore, prestigious festivals on the summer calender - not bad for something that started life as a fundraisers for a swimming club!

Having sewn itself into musical folklore with three defining festivals between 1968 and 1970 (when tickets cost £3 and more than 250,000 people turned up), the event was shut down for safety reasons and remained dormant for more than 30 years.

Revived in 2002, the festival is nothing near the scale of its spontaneously shambolic glory days, however it remains one of the UK's major festivals and is currently on a roll, with the event getting bigger and better by the year.
