those automatic ID readers are obviously to check if the person is under age, but also have other info like if you're banned or a known trouble maker in other places. Also for advertising purposes, they got customers details to send promotions through the post. Its not really a police thing, but some clubs now wont let you in without ID when these machines are in place, so best to have some on you
