CyberKitten presents Toolbox - preview with Tom Parr & K8-e

This article is about CYBERKITTEN presents TOOLBOX TOUR 2008 @ Fever in Northampton, Fri 27 Jun 2008

Tom Parr is one of the rising stars of the hard house scene. With tunes signed to leading labels like Flashpoint, Tripoli, Nosebleed, Oktane and Volatile to name but a few, Tom's distinct brand of hard house sets him apart as one of the nu-breed producers to closely keep an eye on. With gigs for Harder, Recreation, Frantic and Insekt within the last year Tom has also firmly cemented himself on the djing circuit.

K8-e is well known to the CyberKitten crew. A guest regular for a number of years now Kate has played across the spectrum at CyberKitten - just as happy warming up the night with groovy hard house as she is closing it out with the filthy beats. Building her reputation and fan base in recent years K8-e has regular plays for Frantic and has appeared at various nights across the country.

Kate and Tom are soon to launch Atomik Reaction, a label showcasing Tom's engineering skills and the tunes they feel both represent their styles, so they’ve both been hard at work. CyberKitten will be a rare opportunity to see them dj together in this country as their only other regular B2B is in Wales.

The Toolbox tour touches down at CyberKitten on Friday 27th June, ahead of the mayhem we thought we’d have a little fun to get you in the mood with some quick fire questions.

So let’s start with the introductions – we know your name but where do you hail from?

Tom: I’m living in sunny Portsmouth right now but originally come from Chorley – oop North.

K8-e: I come from Portsmouth – born and bred. I love it here. I lived outside the city when I was growing up but now I live in Southsea by the sea. It’s beautiful in summer.

What was the first tune you bought as a dj?

Tom: I can’t remember but when I first got some decks when I was 18 I had various Nukleuz vinyl – like you do. I sold them fairly quickly as djing didn’t really interest me at the time – it was all about producing! It’s only been recently I’ve really got back into it.

K8-e: It was Jam X & De Leon – Can You Dig It? Hard house wise it would be Stimulants Djs – Mind Control and Paul Glazby – Motherfucker

What’s been the most unusual request you’ve received when behind the decks?

Tom: I’ve not had one yet.

K8-e: Lucky you! Someone asked me if I liked Drum ‘n Bass the other weekend while I was behind the decks. They then asked me if I was playing it (?!) and when I said ‘no this is a hard dance night’ they asked me if I’d heard of Pendulum and if I’d play some right now. Er no!

And the strangest thing you have seen in a club?

Tom: After parties certainly brings out some strange ones.

K8-e: Yeah after hours clubbing is always quite surreal I find. I’m not sure I’ve seen anything REALLY strange in a club though, no stranger than life on the outside.

Best city for a mad weekend?

Tom: London – 24/7 partying.

K8-e: Yeah I’d have to agree London is great.

What’s the most expensive tune you have ever bought, how much did you part with and do you still play it now?

Tom: Probably £8 for vinyl back in the day. I’m fortunate enough to be in a position now where I get sent quite a lot of upfront material and promos and I play a lot of my own tunes.

K8-e: I’ve paid £45 before for a tune for my ex that he really wanted. For myself it would have to be SHOKK – Isn’t it a little strange. It was so hard to get hold of before the repress and I waited AGES for it to come up on ebay. I paid £18. I would still play it today in a hard trance set but as I’m totally playing hard house it doesn’t come out much.

Which is your favourite tune that you’ve produced, or what tune do you wish you had produced and why?

Tom: My favourite track is my latest – called Hiphop (will be out on my Tom Parr EP due out on Adam M’s label Oktane later this year).

K8-e: My favourite tune I’ve produced would have to be Don’t Want, it’s just so cheeky. If I could choose one tune I wished I’d produced it would be Tom Parr, Lucy Fur and Dj Elle - Diva - fantastic tune.

Djing is thirsty work! What drink gets you through?

Tom: Redbull.

K8-e: I’m normally driving so a nice cold, ice cold diet coke. If I’m not driving - with vodka.

What was the last film you watched?

Tom: All three Matrix films.

K8-e: Yeah we started watching it on Sunday and finished it off on Tuesday. I have the box set and haven’t watched it for a good few years now. Love it!

Seriously single or deliriously attached?

Tom: Attached.

K8-e: Oi!! Deliriously attached please :)

What was the last text you received and who was it from?

Tom: Was from k8 saying she loved me.

K8-e: Aww aren’t I nice. Mine was from Kauz giving me his details for an upcoming interview I’m doing.

Complete this sentence. I love hard house because…

Tom: it’s great to listen to when you are dressed in women’s clothes baking cakes at the weekend.

K8-e: you think he’s joking… Haha seriously I personally love it when the tunes pop as you mix and I love the energy and the fun in the music I play.

Tell us one thing about yourself we’d never ever guess?

Tom: I’m a huge fan of Motown – legends like Stevie Wonder, Luther Vandross and Marvin Gaye especially are my heroes.

K8-e: I'm essentially quite geeky and I love sci-fi like Doctor Who and Star Trek.

Finally - what words do you live by?

Tom: I don't know any sayings!

K8-e: Carpe diem!

Thanks guys! You can catch Nik Denton, Dave Owens, Tim Stokes, Tom Parr, Lucy Fur, Kirsty-Lee James, and K8-e at the CyberKitten Toolbox tour on Friday 27th June @ Fever, Northampton. And all for just £5 before 12:30am! See you there.
