This article is about KOMPIS @ Ghost in Northampton (UK), Thu 06 Mar 2008
With the eagerly and highly anticipated launch of KOMPIS on the 6th March...
One of London's most talented and up & coming electro giants ED KANE will be showing us how its done with his phenomenal set of pure dirt, jackin house and twisted electro...with remixes out Toolroom and Stealth and residencies at Sick on the Dancefloor @ SE1 London and If @ Bushwackers (Birmingham), this bloke really knows how to make a dancefloor weak at the knees.
Birmingham's finest, CHRIS JAMES jacks up the pace with some heavy house and electro choonage - proving to us why he's one of Birminghams most popular dj, playing regularly at 'If' @ Bushwackers, Ministry Of Sound, Turnmills, Bushwackers, Spin, Fuel, Mud, Plastic, Glam, Bambu, Moneypennys...and now with remixes out on Kompis.
With multiple plays on Eddie Halliwell's BBC Radio 1 show - Northampton regulars FLEX & NILSSON always deliver supreme heaviness and energetic electro genius to their sets aswell as their productions!!
There's a lot more to this line-up than meets the eye...if they really ARE gonna rock the socks off our tootsies on Thursday 6th March then we damn well want to know a bit more about them!! So....first installment comes from dastardly duo, Flex and Nilsson.....
Ten minutes with Flex & Nilsson - playing at the launch of KOMPIS @ Ghost in Northampton...Thursday 6th March.
1. How would you describe your music to people who may not have heard you before? Ted - “A mix of electro of and house with a twist!”
2. How did the two of you first meet and how did the Flex and Nilsson duo come about? Joe - “We both dj’d at a local night back in 2005 – got chatting and then started to meet regularly for a jamm on the decks! That soon progressed to producing and the rest is history.”
3. Who are your influences, heroes and gods!? Ted – “LTJ Bukem everytime…such an intelligent producer..” Joe – “ Carl Cox, mixing wise and Daft Punk for their originality, every album they’ve produced has always broken new boundaries. And ofcourse their live shows!
4. Since 2005, how do you feel your music is progressing stylistically aswell as technically? Ted – “Technically…Without wanting to sounds big headed – but I suppose every track we produce now is getting signed to labels – which kind of shadows the way our production skills are growing. Joe – “In terms of progression, when we started – Ted obviously knew much more than me…but from the tracks we made when we started up till now, you can hear on every track it’s improved. But I reckon the last three or four tracks we’ve done that’ve been signed have been a good indication of how our tracks need to sound. We’re always looking to do produce something different though, new styles etc…”
5. What was the first record you ever bought, dj’ing wise? Joe – “Probably an old drum’n’bass record and now I’ve got to think of the name…” Ted – “My first record was from a label called ‘Twisted’ and the track was called ‘Turn Me’…can’t remember who it was though..a house record.
6.What are your thoughts on the electro scene at the moment? Joe – “Hmmmm. In danger of becoming stale…” Ted – “Well what exactly is electro these days?! There are so many variations nowadays…” Joe – “Yeah, there are so many different offshoots – its more a housey sound now – you’ve got all these house labels doing ‘electro’ tracks on labels you’d never expect to do electro! Ted – “Most of the electro in the charts has got a house vocal on it which means they just make a house mix of it…because original electro doesn’t have any vocals on it because it comes from the break..and I think now, what used to be electro, and the artists and dj’s that used to play it are now starting to go into the techno side..
So you think it’s here for the duration or do you think it’s going to burn out?
Joe – “well its lasted longer than I expected, and that’s why I think – ‘is this electro?’ or is it now just what house music is going to sound like?...I mean when I say electro – I think of Ed Kane kind of stuff, really gritty, dirty stuff.
7. Is there one tune that could religiously drop into every set you do? Ted – “ I can never get enough of Groove Armada’s Superstylin’!! Haha…love that tune. Joe – “Trentmoeller’s remix of Moby’s ‘Go’..
8. If you had to choose between dj’ing or studio productions…which one would get the boot!? Ted – “Dj’ing…I’m happier in the studio!” Joe – “I think I’d have to agree with Ted…dj’ing.”
9. What equiptment do you have in the studio? Ted – “Imac, Logic Pro 7, ableton, novation supernova, proteus, emu xl1…"
10. Whats next in store for Flex and Nilsson? Any new releases or gigs coming up? Ted – “We’re still waiting for release dates on a couple of remixes for Lowered Recordings that we’ve done. Joe – “We’re working on some really different stuff in the studio at the moment…trying out some new sounds and stuff…” Ted - “And we are playing at the launch of the Kompis nights at Ghost in Northampton on the 6th and 20th march which we are really looking forward to…Ed Kane and JNR-J – its going to be something really different and exciting for Northampton so we are very pleased to be involved in that!”
11. Your biggest personal highlight for Flex & Nilsson so far? Ted – “Radio play on BBC Radio 1 on Eddie Halliwell’s show for sure…multiple plays aswell…not once but twice!! Haha… Joe – “Yeah definetely – you know your doing something right when Radio 1 plays your tune twice!
