Up Close and Personal with Danny Howells……
Danny Howells is one of the few d.j’s on the scene today that truly has his own unique style. Starting out in his hometown of Hastings he gained a residency at Bedrock after being asked to play by a certain John Digweed. Since those early days he literally hasn’t looked back. This year alone has seen Danny jetting around the four corners of the globe including We Love Sundays @ Space, Ibiza plus Global Gathering and Glastonbury..
Danny's infectious personality and individual style is what really puts him a cut above the rest though. You can really sense his connection with the crowd wherever he plays, and he has fully earned the label "the clubbers DJ".
1. When where you happiest?
Usually when I'm with my girlfriend. After that, it’s usually when I'm playing in some exciting club with a great sound system!
2. Which words or phrases do you most overuse?
Shit, bollocks, fuck.
3. What is your most treasured possession?
Probably my records, especially those from when I was a child - the ones my family gave me for Christmas and birthdays etc.
4. What is the trait you most deplore in others?
I don't know really, because every time I spot a trait I dislike, I later find myself doing that same thing!
5. How do you relax?
Watching telly, playing records, going out shopping with my girlfriend, usual stuff!
6. You go to a fancy dress party, what outfit would you wear?
I'm pretty unimaginative when it comes to costumes, so I'd probably revert back to the old faithful Sponge Bob again.
7. What is your favourite book?
I don't read any fiction - it's nearly always music books that I read - but two of my favourites are Brian Wilson's autobiography, and Journey Across America with The Rolling Stones.
8. If you could go back or forward in time where would you go and why...?
I think probably the late 60s/early 70s. I'd go to Woodstock, see the Stones at Altamont and Hyde Park, probably catch a few Led Zep gigs too whilst waiting for Bowie to change my life with his 70s albums!
9. What single thing would improve the quality of your life?
A decent laptop…this one is the worst piece of crap I've ever laid my fingers on.
10. You throw a party and can invite 3 special guests either alive or dead...who and why?
Mmm, off the top of my head I'd go for Bowie, Miles Davis and probably Marvin Gaye. Pretty one dimensional aren't I?
You can catch Danny Howells playing for Somewhere on Saturday October 27th at Henry’s, Haymarket, Norwich. Tickets are on sale from the venue on 01603 625365. Full details from the Somewhere website – www.somewhere4u.co.uk
