Unique Music Presents: Moussa Clarke (Oven Ready Records)

Firstly how did you get into Dj'ing and music productions?

"I sang and played guitar in a very very dodgy band at school - my mate still has the tapes I think, they need to be destroyed, we were awful - although ironically nearly every member of the band has gone on to have some kind of half-decent music industry career. House music kind of took over my life, and by the time I was at university I'd ditched the guitar and was DJing in clubs regularly. I spent some time in France in the early '90s and got one of my first big breaks there - I was resident for the Soma parties, which a bunch of mad British ex-pats used to organize right at the top of the Pompidou Centre. They'd somehow persuaded the people in charge that holding a rave in one of Paris' major architectural and cultural icons would be a really good idea. It was a cool time - I got to play alongside people like Sasha, Darren Emerson and Andrew Weatherall, and it made me really appreciate the global nature of the scene."

Who influenced you as a DJ/producer and what got you into the scene?

"Hard to know where to start - on the DJ side, Carl Cox has always been a bit of a favourite. On the producer side of things, people like Kevin Saunderson, Leftfield, Slam, The Grid, Marshall Jefferson, Tony Humphries, Future Sound of London, Steve Silk Hurley, Frankie Knuckles etc when I was starting out. These days I would have to namecheck people like the Swedish House Mafia, Thomas Schumacher, The Neptunes, Mike Monday, Sebastien Leger, DJ Sender, Jody Wisternoff, Stuart Price, Basement Jaxx, Imogen Heap etc etc... There's so much great music about... I grew up listening to stuff like The Police, The The, Peter Tosh, Prince and loads of opera (my mum was a singer) - so music's always been a big thing."

What has been your ultimate highlight and your funniest event in the time you've been playing?

"Well getting to travel the world doing what you love is already good enough for me, but a few highlights have to be playing one of the first ever house stages at the Fete De La Musique in Paris, the Sancho Panza stage at Notting Hill Carnival, huge full moon beach parties in Kazakhstan, 5,000 person outdoor raves in the middle of Russia, arriving for the first time in Tokyo and the city completely blowing my mind, and appearing on Top of the Pops (RIP) miming the keyboards very badly, complete with embarrassing mock-rockstar pointy finger action."

How did Oven Ready come about and what's on the cards for 2007?

"I originally started the label many years ago with an old schoolfriend, Linus. We stopped after 10 releases, and there was a few years hiatus - I went off and did the PF Project/Tzant stuff with Jamie White, and also did a day job as A&R for Multiply Records; Linus set up Vinyl Addiction Records with Sancho Panza and the Finger Lickin crew then ran off to become a techno DJ. After Multiply I was at Ministry of Sound for a bit, then I left and started up Oven Ready again (without Linus this time, who emigrated to Canada)."

"Since then I've put out releases and remixes from Openair, Flash Brothers, Filthy Rich, Mike Monday, Max Graham and more... Next up is a Wally Lopez-produced double A-Side, "Aries" and "CD Revolution", then it's Denmark's Professional Losers with "Shake It". It's all here: www.ovenready.net."

"On the production side, I've done a ridiculous amount of remixes for various labels in the last year or so - got a few more to finish then Im going to take a little break and concentrate on my own stuff a bit more in 2007 - I've got a couple of singles due out next year on Slammin in Germany and Starview in Holland. It's all here: www.moussaclarke.com."

In your time on the international DJ circuit which country is most up for a party?

"You can go pretty much anywhere in the world these days and discover a scene, the internet and cheap air travel means it’s gone fully global. I'm a big fan of Central and Eastern Europe right now, Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Georgia etc... I also play in Russia loads - the scene there is huge and the people are really up for it, its part of the culture. But you know what, it's all good: I love playing all over the place - Portugal, Spain, Japan, France, Kazakhstan, Holland, wherever... and good old Blighty too :-)"

What release are you really feeling at the moment?

"Leger & Lake - "Aqualight" on Rising, plus a shameless plug for Dumb Dan's remix of my tune "Fade Away" on Starview, which is out next year. He's done such a great job it's put my mix to shame!"

Do you have some tasty exclusive lined up for us on boxing day?

"Yes indeed - I’m putting together a couple of remixes and re-edits especially for the night, plus loads and loads of upfront stuff from the label and studio, and my friends around the world."

With Electro & Breaks taking the dance music scene by storm is it here to stay our should we expect a return to more soulful & funky house sound?

"The current electro thing is bold and brash, with big sounds that always work well on the dancefloor. The exciting thing about house music is that it’s always looking forward to the next thing and changing and splitting off into different subgenres, so it will definitely undergo some kind of transformation again, it’s already happening now. I've personally never found listening to one style all night long all that interesting, so i think there's always room for different stuff anyway... As long as it moves you in some way, that’s the main thing."

Vinyl or CD or Ableton?

"Vinyl in my soul, CDs in my bag, Ableton in my studio."

Is this your first visit to Narrrrwich, and have you ever driven a tractor?

Norwich - a fine city. It's my first time playing there, but I actually went out with a young lady from Norwich for many years, so I know it fairly well, although haven’t been there for a while. I heard they shut down the Rowntrees factory a few years ago, so that delicious chocolate smell has gone :-)

HAHA... very much in Norwich, but really good to see that people think Moussa would make a good London booking.

By the way train travel from London is only £10 return if booked in advance you fancy it.

London????

Hehe! Sorry Chaps - my Bad! I meant the UK - Us Foreigners seem to mistakenly see no further than the boundaries of the City! We are working on that though!

Good to see the Moose headlining anywhere for that matter! He is all class! (-;

Good interview :)

Really looking forward to this, will be my 1st night out on a Boxing Day, its usually spent scoffing my face with mince pies and other various unhealthy foods, so I'm really excited!

I'll be sat on my parents sofa in Manchester watching my Grandmother dribble for entertainment.

I'll join you in the 'dribbling thing' hun but I'll be on the dancefloor! ;) x

that came out totally wrong....hmmm, let me try and refrase that....

I will be dribbling to some dirty music (in a good way, if thats possible) on the dancefloor where there are no elderly people (!!!!) thinking about you with your grandmother on Boxing Day, this is all coming out so wrong. I actually don't know what I am trying to say anymore!! I was just trying to make you feel better about the fact you can't go out.

:oS
