Down at Unique
This was an event that had more of a buzz around it than a beehive full of unemployed bees on giro day. The Unique boys had created enough hype to make the sometimes sleepy town of Norwich up for party - would this be delivered, or would it be lost in the post ?

Like Eddie Murphy in Beverly Hills Cop the Heat was on.... From the moment the door opened till they slammed shut, there was an exciting energy about the club. Was it the people, was it the music, was it the first friday proper of the month meaning that cash stuffed pockets longed to be spent ? In truth, it wasn't any single one of these factors... Its the blend of everything that goes into a Unique Music party that makes the party Unique.

The Mustard Lounge is a converted pub having spent incarnations as both a market town drinkery, in the form of the "Pig and Whistle", evolving into a "Friends" themed bar in the late nineties called "Chandlers" and now keeping an interior deco reminiscent of a pirate shit we find it named in a homage to the Colman's mustard-laced history of Norwich.

Having developed a preference for the more happy, funky, cheesy vocal line music, I decided to spend the majority of the evening downstairs. The music simply appealed to my personal tastes more.

The first act of the evening was Barham Jnr Jnr (Joey-UM) and Elzo. It makes me wonder how many more of these bloody Barham boys there will be.... They're gonna become like a DSI version of the Waltons. They started well and had a very good, positive tune selection, occassionally bumping the mixes, but this was forgiven in the overall feel of the set.

Miss Mindy came on the decks next and played an excellent set of uplifting vibes, in a well thought out set. I don't know whether it was planned or a "crowd read" but she seemed to not only hit the buttons for take off, but fully engage the autopilot. Mixing in contemporary classics with a few lesser known tracks everyone in the room couldn't help grinning as each mix crawled up the backbone to send the message home.

Kaz Fresh was the final DJ of the night and continued to play in the same style that had laced the evening with enough intoxication to make even the most cynical of clubbers (I.E. me) realise that there had been a great happening down Unique tonight. His mixes were fresh and so uplifting everytime people tried to sit down and have a conversation, they were dragged mercilessly back to the dancefloor.

The whole thing was punctuated by the rhythms of one of my favourite DSI musical acts (and lets face it, one of the most open, happy going, members of this picture box website) Beatz-is-Frisky... Someone in the crowd put it best - "most percussionists you hear drown the music and spoil it... This guy is able to put the icing on the cake... He adds to it perfectly without taking away"... I don't think I could have summed it up better myself.

By the end of the evening, people had realised something quite cool had happened here. Everyone was getting on, chatting, smiling and the club had the vibe that you so often take for granted when its there (hey! you're cool...), but boy do you miss it when its not. Relaxing ? So laid back it could have been a sunbed.... While at the same time so fucking on the edge it could have been a cliff.... If that ain't Unique then I don't know what is....

LOL....Jack they maybe normal for you but it's all to do with proportions and the fact that your a 6ft 5" + hunk of barham I think counteracts the errr generous dimensions of "the ears". Hey they suit you all and you wouldn't be the same without em ;)

Katita too right....there was no stopping us, not even polite "hellos" just stomping smiling faces all round! Was great to have you all along for the ride on Friday.
