Elev-8 Interview With Janette Slack

Hi Janette, how’s it going?

"TIMMMEEEHH!! Sorry, had to be done. Yeah I’m super! Thanks for asking! (sorry, I’m just quoting South Park too much in one sentence, I’ll stop now ahem)"

What have you been up to in the studio of late can we expect any hot new release soon?

"Yeah my new track Red Ramona is out on Air Recordings and also Shake’n’Play which was a collaboration with Dogmatix. Been receiving support from Radio 1, Kiss, Cool Cuts and a bunch of fellow DJs. And I’m working on a few remixes, one is for remixing a tune for Stylus Rex ‘Cops on Coke’ which should be out later on in the year."

From all looks of things 2007 is going to be a manic year for you, where do you see yourself going in 2008?

"Onwards and upwards rather than backwards and downwards."

How did you first get into the music scene and how long has it taken to get where you are today?

"I started DJing in 1998 and was helping to do decorations in raves in Hong Kong as I wanted to get involved somehow. When I moved to London I got a job at Vinyl Addiction and also worked in a little studio in Kingston. All these things put together helped me get to where I am today as one thing always leads to another if you work hard and stick with it."

What the most memorable moment of your career so far and what was your biggest nightmare and how did you get out of it?

"Too many memorable moments, but I can tell you about my biggest nightmare!

At my first gig the needle died whilst I was playing. I had no idea that could even happen at the time! So of course I freaked out. Luckily there was a spare deck behind the bar so the bar manager threw the spear needle at me and I managed to change the needle in time and mix it into the new tune with the new needle. I was so glad the club didn’t have to suffer a silence and have me standing there going ‘Whoops!’ "

What’s hot in your box at the moment?

"I can’t stop playing all the new Micky Slim, High Eight, Dirty South and Audiofly tunes and remixes at the moment, they are totally on fire!"

What do you use for music production, Cubase, Reasons, Ablton or pro tools and why?

"I use Logic 7.2. Some of the additional Audio Units I use are Trilogy, Absynth, some of the Arturia synths and a bunch of plug ins that have fancy filters and delays. The ones I really rate are from Ohm Boys and Camel Audio. I did start out with Cubase VST and Reason when I first got into music production, but then moved onto using Logic as that’s what they had at college, so I have just stuck with that. All these programs (Ableton, Cubase, Sonar etc..) are equally as good as each other. Different people like to use different programs, they are just tools, you gotta use the one that you are most comfortable with."

Lately we have seen a lot of DJ’s use laptops for their sets, do you think this is just plain cheating or do you think this is the next big thing.

"I think if a DJ wants to use records, CDs or a laptop it doesn’t really matter. As long as good music is being played and the crowd is still dancing then why does it matter? I don’t see how that could be cheating. I use a mixture of vinyl and CD, so I haven’t caught onto the laptop thang yet. It is more convenient to bring more tunes with you and less of a back ache! As time goes on, we humans are obsessed with making things smaller and more convenient. Only a few years ago we were carrying Discmans and now look at the iPOD boom!"

If you have the night off who would you check out and where would you go?

I"t’s definitely a tie between Jonty Scrufff at Trailer Trash or the Dirtpop from Slackers Convention in Brighton. Both artists have such define styles and their sound has such a driving menacing attitude it’s just so dirty it’s inspiring. I recommend anyone who has a chance to see either of them play to make sure they do so!"

With more and more female DJ’s making a name for themselves in the club scene do you think it will become an all female profession in the end?

"I think men are gonna have to start getting boob jobs and electrolysis to keep up and women are gonna have to start taking testosterone hormone pills. That way, no one will really be able to tell and it won’t matter."

Are you sure it’s a good idea getting a lift with AWE Soundsystem, we not convinced they can stomach after parties?

"It’s ok, I’m bringing a first aid kit with spear organs, enough to go around."

Tractor or Combine harvester?

"I’m not the farming type, so I choose hoverboard."
