This article is about Elev-8 Christmas Carnage With Krakajax + Darftphunk (Santa / Miss Santa Theme!) @ Mustard Lounge / Imagine WineBar in Norwich (UK), Fri 23 Nov 2007
Hi chap.. how's it going?
Im very well thanks, just getting over a wine filled evening with the missus, I cooked steak and very nice it was too….
You've been a rising star in the breakbeat, what have been your ultimate highlights since you started your DJing career?
Ohhh, let me think….. Playing on the beach in Azerbaijan to 8000 people who had never heard breakbeat before has to be one of them, it was just a very strange experience. When we got off the plane, I was greeted by some guy who said “welcome to Azerbaijan” and gave me an onion. Having the Plumps use Right There for there radio one mix has been my most giddiest moment, I was flying back from Portugal and I checked my emails in the airport and Jimmy for nuskoolbreaks had sent me an email telling they had played it, I spent the flight home grinning a lot…
How did you first get into the music scene and how long has it taken to get where you are today?
I've been Djing now for 17 years (I'm showing my age now) typical story from most people who started back at that time, house music? What's that? I like this! Started playing lots of free parties when we were all dancing round the woods wearing stupidly baggy jeans and wearing dust masks with an 8 written on them. Things started getting interesting about 1999, My friends entered me into a DJ competition that was being run by Nick Slater from Shades of Rhythm/Drumattic Twins fame. I won the comp and I was offered a weekly residency. I stayed at Bungalow for long very very messy years…After the place closed its doors was when I really started to concentrate on the production side of things. The Drumattics have a been a huge influence, they have offered me guidance when I needed it and generally taught me a lot of things both in and outside of the studio (some helpful, some not so helpful). The Live thing that we do has probably received the most attention, its been working so well for us, people seem to really dig what we are doing which is really nice. With top reviews in IDJ 5/5, DJ Mag 4/5 and your tunes being featured on a Plumps DJ’s mix for Annie Nightingale’s BBC1 show and Jay Cunnings Kiss FM show. What can we expect next from Darftphunk?
Absolutely nothing! After the end of this year we are changing the name to Pimpsoul, for obvious reasons we sound like a certain Parisian pair .The first 2008 release on Splank! Will be be the my new one. Dub mustard + Big O have been getting plays on Kiss FM and from the handful of DJ’s who have it. I'm gonna be concentrating on full vocal tracks, I have a cracking pair of vocalists in the live set up and we want to start doing more tracks using them. There is a few remixes planned for various bods but mainly its all about the music in 2008. What choons are hot in your box at the moment?
The Dumattic Twins new one is some serious next level sh*t, Broken Planet is they’re next one for fingerlickin, its simply amazing. Maelstroms “mokassa” on West is simply the funkiest thing ever, been playing this since steelz gave me a copy when we did breakpoll this year. I don’t think I’ll ever stop playing it and of course my new tracks,
Lastly, we love bananas, especially after a night out with the Elev-8 crew. What is your favourite snack after a night out?
I am the sandwich king, At the moment its all about chicken, mayo, cheese and avocado on a nice soft bap, its all about the softness of the bap, not too soft or you may encounter bread break, which in turn leads to messy finger. On the flip side go too dry and bite round the back it could taste bitter, especially if you don’t get near the filling. I feel sandwiches are sometimes over looked as a major food group.
