Ed-Kane, The Man Who Put "Dirt" In Dirty, Comes To Norwich

This article is about Soulshaker Presents: Digital Disko - Xmas Special @ Ponana in Norwich (UK), Fri 15 Dec 2006

How did you get involved with the music scene production and DJ’ing?

"Wow, I’ve been doing this a while..... I got my first set of belt drive decks when I was 13 and moved on to production when I was 16. I used to make and DJ hip hop, and also did drum and bass for a while, but started getting into making house a couple of years ago. 'Give Me Dirt' was the first house tune I ever finished funnily enough."

What lead you to electro house?

"I’ve always been into really aggressive music all throughout growing up (Hip Hop, Metal, Drum and Bass) but now I’m a little older and a little wiser, electro gives me a more intelligent platform to express myself. That said I’m spending a lot of time toying with more minimal and technoish stuff 2 these days."

With your productions getting some big name plays from the likes of Armand Van Helden & D. Ramirez what gave you the biggest buzz off 2006.

"Hmm, tough question, probably hearing 'Give Me Dirt' had torn up the space terrace when Tom Stephan played it back in august...... If I had a checklist of things to achieve before I die, my tune tearing up the space terrace would be one of them."

What projects are you currently working on and what can we expect
from Ed-Kane in 2007?

"Shitloads!!"

"Currently im working on setting up Dirtbag records with the Ninja Cowboys and we have an EP called 'Dirtbag Volume One' on its way. My tune on there is called 'One Trick Pony' because it’s not my usual style, a bit more techno than electro as well as all my forthcoming stuff:"

Ed Kane - Sick Puppy (Feb 2007 Sunflower)

Ed Kane – Gutterball (2007 Dozer)

Ninja Cowboys – Bedtime (Ed Kane’s More Kalpol Remix) (2007 Dozer)

Pete Wales – Let it Go (Ed Kane’s Dirtbag Remix) (2007 Shove Music)

Nimrod – My Life (Kane and Pellitero remix) (Maelstrom 2007)

Ed Kane - One trick pony (2007 Dirtbag)

Donatella Movement - Love can be (Ed Kane's Dirtbag mix) (SuSu 2007)

Prok + Fitch – Unstoppable (Ed Kane’s Dirtbag Remix) (TBC)

The Ninja Cowboys and yourself formed Dirtbag which you now hold at The Egg, how did all that come about?

"Well the Ninjas and I met about a year ago, I engineered a track for them, and we got on like a house on fire. Since then, I’ve engineered most of their tracks and we’ve begun DJing together at certain events. In order to make tracks and DJ together, but still have our own identity, we set up “Dirtbag”. The Idea is to create more of a brand than a collective, however with more club nights set for 2007 and the label soon to be up and running big things are on the cards."

Lots of DJ's are using Ableton and a collection of synth’s and hardware for their sets, will you be going down the route or sticking to CDs?

"I sure am. I’m not a fan of Ableton, I don’t like going to a club to watch someone check their email, it’s just boring. I spend my whole week looking at a computer screen making tunes, I don’t want to do it when I’m DJing too. I love mixing its fun, and the flaws in mixes are what make it human."

"I’m going to see Sasha play at a secret party in London on sat, so maybe he will change my mind, but to be honest I doubt it."

"I like the Idea of bringing in synths, hardware and more FX’s into DJ sets though, something to look into in 2007 for definate."

Who in your opinion is the most talented producer of 2006 on the
electro scene?

"For me, in the early part of the year Eric Prydz's 'Cirez D' productions blew me away. Records like Punchdrunk and Knockout really inspired me back in Feb when I made give me dirt. Luke Dzierzek was a huge influence then too. Also the likes of Stephan Bodzin and Oliver Huntemann have made a huge impact this year. In terms of where I’m at now it’s hard to pick out anyone in particular, but there sure seems to be plenty of good music around."

Have you got some “dam right dirty” exclusives for us on Friday?

"Don’t tempt me. You’ll end up with burst eardrums."

What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened whilst you where DJ’ing?

"Someone asked me to play 'Put Your Hands Up For Detroit' on Saturday."

Is this your first gig outside of London and what’s your impression
of the Naaaarwich scene?

"This is indeed my first venture out of London for a house Gig. We have hired a tractor especially for it."

"No seriously, at the risk of sounding ignorant, I have never been to Norwich before, so know very little of the scene. That said I really can’t wait to check it out and come party with you lovely people."
