Pam's House - Kidding around
Saturday comes round again. The skies are blue and there's that early summertime vibe in the air, the Sun is hanging just nicely and the early evening feel has that light hazy quality. Of course, I've been spending all week looking forward to tonight...

Pam's House should need no introduction to anyone who's either been near this site or out in Norwich over the past few years, but just for those who are a little late coming to the table.... Pam's House is Norwich's premier Dance music promoter. They grew out of an after-party that used to run in Ipswich, around the time of Baywatch.... hence their venue was decked out with a ton of pictures of Pamela Anderson... So over time the name has stuck. Now, Baywatch hasn't been on the TV for some time has it? Right, so now you've got a good idea of how long these guys have been promoting for. You don't last in the promotions business for 2 minutes unless you've got the professionalism and passion to make parties really happen, and Pam's House just happens to have that in spades.

The thing about Norwich is that it can be a bit behind on the times. Most of the people here like to go out to real commercial clubs and pubs and avoid the dance music scene. There’s a large free party movement here, but this has fallen into bad ways of late. However, there are a large amount of dance music fans in Norwich – so let’s face it, for many, many lovers of the bouncing arts of the turntable maestros, Pam’s House is a really candle in the darkness.

Kidology are in the second room. They've chosen Norwich as the first date on their road tour. I'd love to tell you more about these guys – and I will, if you keep your eyes peeled on DSI then you’ll be seeing a great introductory article about Mark and the Kidettes – in my opinion they’re the capital’s hottest upcoming dance night, so we’ll just leave it like that for moment.

The UEA LCR is a great venue for Pam’s House. Hard dance requires a large venue with enough freedom and dancefloor for an epic night and the main room fulfils that criteria. However, until the Pam’s crew get their hands on it, it’s just a big empty room. They make the space theirs with dancers, stage visuals, and décor. Most people make a big effort as this is Norwich’s biggest dance event, so everything lends the whole affair that special party vibe that makes the hours of the night pass in the blink of an eye.

The DJs have come to rock tonight. Paul Glazby is the main act and is supported by Vicky Devine and the excellent trio of resident Pam’s DJs Ruddaz, Andy James and Danny Burch. The hard room is always a success at Pam’s and tonight is certainly no exception. The DJ’s have come to play tonight and the main act of the evening, Mr Glazby seems to be on phenomenal form. Whatever Pam’s are doing to keep getting the best out of their booked DJ’s and residents, I suggest they keep on doing it. After all, as the old adage goes, if it ain’t broke, then don’t you dare fix it…?

The Kidology crew are in the second room which is quite a bit smaller than the main room. This is the Pam’s House funky house spin off, cleverly called PHunky (you see what they’ve done there) This room suits a more lounge like funky upfront house style as it’s not like you are ever going to be pushed to find space to dance, or lean back and chill out with a drink. The DJ’s are fabulous with Mark Wilkinson and Eddie Kidd from Kidology headlining the room. The Kidettes punctuate the stage and dancefloor and bring an explosion of colour, vibrancy and classy sophistication to the feel of the room. If there was a single word I had to pick to sum up what this room was like it would be “smiling”. Like every face in the room, like the music, like the DJs, all of them seemed to have that beautiful beaming grin on their faces in some crazy unison. Nights should always be like this.

b0 was one of the Pam's regulars who managed to dress and impress as a Kidette for the night. We've got a feature on how he found that experience to be, coming in the next couple of days. So again, keep watching the forums and posts...

The night ended a little early at the UEA but the party carried on going at Liquid, on the Prince of Wales road… which isn’t really one of my favourite nightclubs, but this springtime Saturday it found itself transformed from a lowly student drinking trough into a beautiful temple of hallowed house. If there was one point I’d like to make on the negative it was the attitude of some of the door people around this club – come on guys, we know you’ve got a job to do, but just because you’ve never seen men dress in neon colours it’s no excuse to get heavy. Of course, this was far more down to the club than anything to do with the excellent promotion of the night.

I’d like to say that I spent some time in the harder section in Liquid of the night, but by then I’d been caught in the spell of PHunky and Kidology in the second room. It’s fair to say I wasn’t the only one as nightclub protocol went out the window as I found myself dancing alongside Danny, the Pam’s main man on the plush, luxurious sofas used to create an impromptu DJ booth. Eddie Kidd is the first man on and I’m dancing off to the side, twirling my old skool house moves with brightly clad girls. It’s a cliché, but if I had to put a definition of fun on Wikipedia, I’d simply paste up a video of this room.

It’s always very hard for me to sum up exactly how good a night was. Well, every time my mind wanders back to Saturday night, I can’t help but feel that happy rush ride all over my body. To say it was fantastic would be an understatement. Pam’s were on their best form, and Kidology were the cherry on the cake. I really think I’m going to be hard pushed to beat a night out like this in good old Norwich for some serious time. It’s not been this good since the crazy days of the early 90’s at the Waterfront. This was a masterclass par excellence in clubbing class.

I’d like to personally thank Danny, Mark, Alex, Scott and everyone involved. You made it simply special.
