Dan Stone Interview.

This article is about Roobarb featuring Dan Stone @ Waterfront in Norwich (UK), Fri 25 Apr 2008

Dan, you have been very busy in the studio, what are you working on at the moment?

At the moment I’m working on 2 tracks, one of them is a remix for Alter Ego records by a guy called Digital Nature, that comes out in the next few months. The other is a classic remake for you lovely Roobarb people especially for the night.

Can you tell us what productions you have planned for later this year?

There’s a lot going on this year, my busiest yet, release wise. I’ve got a solo single coming out in 2 months on Mike Koglin’s NOYS label called ‘7 Hours’ and will feature an awesome Mark Pledger (half of Smith & Pledger) remix. Also got a collaboration with Ian Betts called ‘Colliding Circles’ coming out on Jon O’Bir’s Conspiracy label along with another solo track 'Watchful Eye' on the same label out very soon.
Got a collaboration with Godskitchen resident, Mark Eteson called ’Midas Touch’ out on Monster records which Mark told me the other day that its gonna feature on the forthcoming Godskitchen Compilation CD!! well happy with that!!.
Apart from a few more various remixes I will be concentrating on more solo work and hope to get back on the Big (Anjunabeats & A State of Trance etc) labels hopefully, that’s my goal anyway! he he!

Some of the top trance artists such as Paul Van Dyk & Armin Van Buuren have been playing your tracks, how does it feel to get support from these guys?

To be honest it hasn't sunk in properly, but i must say to have the top DJs in the world support your tracks is quite an amazin feeling, even talking about it makes me smile!! It certainly gives me a massive buzz to know I’m finally getting noticed as I’d like to think I’ve worked extremely hard to get to this stage. All of this gives me huge drive & confidence to keep moving forward.

Your tune “Made in Bahrain” featured on last years Gatecrasher Moscow CD. How did that come about?

Basically it went through the same channels as any other track, I have a feeling that maybe Christopher Lawrence was supporting it before hand and wanted it on the Compilation, I was so chuffed when I got the email from Anjunabeats telling me the news!!

How did you get into production work?

I first started co producing with a few well established artists (Marcos & JK Walker) just to learn the ropes. I released quite a few tracks with the engineering help of these guys (Made In Bahrain, Spinal Chord & Road Test) but I really wanted to basically produce it all myself, so about 18 months ago I went solo, its been a long hard learning curve but I’m finally starting to get to a standard where I can produce to a playable quality.

Any advice for aspiring young producers?

Just stick at it!! I know its easy for me to say and I know the DJ market is flooded, but, I’ve been doing it 12 years and had some serious ups and downs and always stuck at it. If the passion is there, you’ll keep going! My main advice is PRODUCTIONS, In my opinion the only DJ that has really ever made it just through DJing skills is Eddie Halliwell, so that says it all really!

It’s always a pleasure to have you play at Roobarb. Do you have anything special lined up for the night?

Well as i said earlier, I'm in the process of another classic remake, but wanna keep it a special surprise for the night. I'll also be testing out a couple of new remixes too.

What has been your favourite gig?

My fav gig had to be my joint headline set with SUNNY LAX for SLIDE in Liverpool 18 months ago, there wasn't a massive crowd but the people who were there were so appreciative and the atmosphere for a last set was amazin!!

And the least favourite? Mention no names.

The worst gig was turning up to play at a club and they closed early so i didn't even get to play one track!! so so annoying and a wasted journey!!

Thanks so much for your time Dan & we look forward to seeing you at the Waterfront on Friday 25th April.

Thanks Dave, a real pleasure.

very much looking forward to this one myself. as many of you will know, i rate Dan immensely as a dj and equally highly as a producer. AND to cap it all he's a thoroughly nice bloke to boot.

it won't be long until he's where he deserves to be, so catch him now at Roobarb...

now Dan, about these promos... (",) lol

I quite agree Andy. Dan's productions are played worldwide & he is highly respected in the Trance scene.

See you on Friday night.

I'm really looking forward to Friday.

I've been lucky enough to hear Dan's remix of PVD's Angel and loved it. Can't wait to hear what else he's got up his sleeve...
