Two of the UK’s fastest rising club brands are colliding for an immense party to shower in the clubbing season. The enigmatic Firefly will be colliding with Geordie rapscallions Wax:On for a soiree in Firefly’s Nottingham home, the Marcus Garvey Ballroom.
Both clubs have quickly cemented their status as trendsetters and forward thinkers in an environment where Darwinian principles are tested to the extreme. Favouring underground music from the breaks, techno, electro and house spheres, they’ve carved a reputation in their respective cities as titans in the rave world, further branching out into Leeds for Wax:On and Birmingham and Bristol for Firefly.
A bash with any one of these two monstrosities is a big enough deal on its own terms, so when they pool their skills together it’s destined to leave the mouth watering.
Headlining the party is none other than the talismanic French electro-techno warrior Vitalic with a very special live performance. Real name Pascal Arbez-Nicolas, Vitalic’s production credits include a remix schedule that has ransacked the great and the good of dance music with everyone from the likes of Slam, Basement Jaxx, Daft Punk and Royksopp all benefitting from his prowess. But it was with his own productions where he has really excelled. If ever a can of worms has been opened in dance music, then Vitalic’s stunning Poney EP did just that in 2001, a mesmerising cavalcade of crashing synths, thunderous electronic beats and whirling rock ‘n roll sensibilities that skewered the direction of techno. Re-invigorating a genre that had stagnated under a drudge of repetitive loops and monotonous drum rolls, the EP was leapt upon by all corners of the dance music fraternity and thrusted the filth driven elements of electro into the consciousness of clubbers, pre-dating electro-clash and nu-rave. His live shows have been scintillating executions of these sultry production manoeuvres and exercises through a blistering and brutal array of music; industrial EBM, Goth, heavy metal and edgy punk funk all weaving together alongside the obligatory electro and techno influences, creating a completely unique and downright terrifying concoction of aural pleasure. An artist who really does live up to the hyperbole, Vitalic is a modern genius of dance music
In support is a faceoff between the powerhouses’ resident teams, with Firefly’s Thrash Jelly and Jeet squaring up against Wax:On’s dexterous duo People Get Real. The Jelly are the four deck mix maestros comprising of Jeet alongside Max Cooper, who use the opportunity to build on their own personal templates of house, breaks and techno to forage through hip hop and drum n bass through their collective prowess. Jeet will also be playing solo at the party, as well as facing off against Wax:On’s own duo People get Real. They continue to refuse to bow to genre conventions and fire through any form of music they see fit. The North east’s answer to The Glimmers or 2ManyDJs, you can expect anything from the most rip-roaring of sing song indie disco staples to sit side by side with minimal techno and hip-snapping grooves.
