The bullingdon arms in oxford is not exactly on the map when it comes to great clubbing venues, but last night it was host to the 7th birthday party of local oxford house night simple. The bar staff and security were both friendly and the transformation from 'could be anywhere' to party venue was complete by 10.30 when the place was pact with people wanting to party. Two of the residents: James Weston and Sean Holbrook warmed up for the man everyone had come to hear and produced a couple of fine sets. (from what i can remember) An unpretentious mix of mainly funky house with some breaks and D&B tracks thrown in and though i'm not a great fan of the later, it worked really well so by the time Erol stepped up the place was heaving.
Now, i've never seen Erol Alkan before so didn't quite know what to expect. What we got was a tecnically skilled DJ who not only has a great track selection but (the sign of a truely great DJ) knew how to work the crowd. The music was spot on and the people loved it!! This guy is premier league. A monster performance and an extremely tough act to follow. The last of the residents, Emily Williams, played out the last hour and a half with some good stuff but the star of the evening had already been on. Still, we danced on untill 4am and i couldn't have asked for more.
