This article is about Relentless Vs Amplified with SI STYLUS and Micheal Bancarz AKA BNW, and M- CLASS @ Bar Bluu & Tantrum in Portsmouth (UK), Fri 04 Apr 2008
What made you first interested in becoming a DJ?
1. BancarZ: Growing up in London , Ontario had its perks. I was surrounded by many creative friends with a passion for the underground. My biggest Dj influence came from hometown legend John Acquaviva. Watching John at the begining of his career was all the insperation that I needed to follow my heart.
1. Watson: I was a regular clubber and used to play in a band, it just seemed like a natural progression
Do you still enjoy clubbing as a leisure activity or is it different when your not controlling the music?
2. BancarZ: I really get enjoyment from all the aspects of clubbing. Both are equally satisfying.
2. Watson: I do enjoy clubbing, i always will. The only time i get annoyed, is when the DJ tries to play something that is not right for the venue or clients. Dj's have a job to fulfill (just like the bar staff and security) and when it is done badly it bugs me.
What keeps you in the scene?
3. BancarZ: A true love for the music and a healthy addiction to the underground environment.
3. Watson: The continuation of the ever evolving monster that is... the Music... of course...
Do you think you can ever get too far ahead of yourself ?
4. BancarZ: I hope not, producing quality tracks takes patience and I wouldn't want to loose that flavor. I do believe you should stay current with the pace of technology these days.
4. Watson: Yes. That is what drives music genres to develop and change what would you rather be a sheep or Sheppard?
How did this turn from a hobby into a career?
5. BancarZ: Producing electronic music has always felt right to me, but it was long time friend Che DuBois that gave me my first copy of Reason that changed my life, after studying it inside and out, bugging him for tips and tricks, I just felt it was time to stop dreaming about it and get it done. With a little quote from Che that always kept me motivated. "Playing other artists is great, playing your music to a crowd in the best feeling in the world"(Che DuBois 2004)
5. Watson: When we started throw the Out Of Order parties back in 2002, it just progressed from there really.
What was your first gig?
6. BancarZ: Century Club in London , Ontario 1995, Holy crap I'm old LOL!!
6. Watson: At the Borough Arms in Andover , with my old mate Mr Twist (AKA Terry)! House music mixed with the requests for the Beegees and Michael Jackson, a strange gig to say the least!
How did you get from there to where you are now?
7. BancarZ: Never gave up wishing it would happen.
7. Watson: Again its all thanks to the Out Of Order parties and working with some amazingly strong minded people, such as Matty Phact and Dash-K. Without these dudes to help guide me none of this would be possible.
Who or what inspires you?
8. BancarZ: Che DuBois, John Acquaviva, Oliver Giacamotto, Richie Hawtin, Martin Gore, Vince Clark and Martin H to name just a few. I really believe you should be inspired by all types of music to make good music.
8. Watson: Judge Jules (back in the day), I remember listening to him on Radio1 and thinking, "that is what i want to do with my life". Nowadays the likes of Dave Spoon and Mickey Slim are really showing us all how to do it. But I take inspiration from lots of different things.
What else is going on in your world right now?
9. BancarZ: Currently I'm involved with Graham Gadfly of VooDoo and TuT TuT to launch a fresh new promotion called MayDay@Mango Powered by Techno Energy Drink. This will be a Polish inspired night with a twist. And recently with BNW signed to Nitrous Records the summer will be crazy with bookings in Ibiza, Rhodes , Poland and of course all over the UK.
9. Watson: My time is split between running a successful event called NITELIFE (www.nlevents.co.uk) with Matty and Kev, in different clubs across the UK . Teaching young people at the local youth group about the finer points of DJing (and more recently the basic points about music production bless 'em). I’m also in the studio quite a lot with Michael producing electronic beats to release under the BNW guise (Bancarz and Watson). Actually BNW has just been signed to Nitrous Records and we are looking forward to releasing lots of material through them this year. On top of that I spend as much time as possible with my beautiful girlfriend Lucy.
Where would you like to be in 10 years time?
10. BancarZ: Collaborating with top artists, Producing chart toppers and gigging the world. Is there anything better?
10. Watson: Hopefully still DJing somewhere, there’s life after 30 (apparently)!
Are you conscious of different audiences when DJing?
11. BancarZ: With so many different countries and styles its essential to know who your standing in front of, a bad set could make or break your night.
11. Watson: Definitely, I work in many different clubs up and down the country and as i have mentioned before I have a job to do, which is to keep the dance floor busy. ("You get 'em here and ill keep 'em here")
Have you ever been afraid of people 'just not getting it'?
12. BancarZ: Oh yes! When first came to Poland , I was very nervous if they would get the Toronto style of Techno I was playing. Luckily after a few tracks they did. But it was a sweaty 15 min.
12. Watson: Yes, but I’m sure when the first house record was played out, it was not exactly met with applause (i might be wrong).
Whats the best and worst place you've played a set?
13. BancarZ: Best place would have to be Psycho Club after hours in Rhodes , Greece . It’s got a great sound system with an amazing crowd, creating an incredible atmosphere. Not worth mentioning the worst, let’s keep this positive.
13. Watson: Worst place would be The Borough Arms (although it has got sentiment attached to it).
Best place would be Turnmills T1 (warming up for Paul Van Dyk).
Any embarrassing moments?
14. BancarZ: Getting caught by the club owner with my pants down behind the decks he he (there was a girl involved)
14. Watson: I better not say…
What was the last record/download you purchased ?
15. : Aeronautics - It’s a Fine Day - ZeroSix Club Mix
15. Watson: Laid back Luke - Break down the House
Do you ever switch off?
16. BancarZ: Yes, most defiantly! I think it’s healthy to turn it off and recharge. Come back fresh to fight another day.
16. Watson: Not a lot.
How does your sound differ from the rest?
17. BancarZ: Its sharp, crunchy and sexy sound giving you a fulfilled satisfaction of pleasure with every passing beat.
17. Watson: I play tracks that get you dancing, no pretentious bullshit with me, if it makes you dance then ill play it.
Describe your style in 3 words?
18. BancarZ: Erotic, Electro, Euphoria
18. Watson: Big, Electro, Party.
What can we expect from your set when you play for us on the 21st?
19. BancarZ: A strong progressive opener leading into a very uplifting pace of Electro Tech-House finishing of with a minimal techno touch.
19. Watson: As mentioned BNW is now signed to Nitrous and we will be launching our singles Wasabi and The Big Beastie. Alongside these little gems we will be playing plenty driving electro house that will have you gagging for more! Please check out www.myspace.com/bancarzandwatson for a sneak preview of the tracks.
Thanks guys
Si and Mike
