Interview with Tim Lyall

What made you first interested in becoming a DJ?

Well it's a long story but I think it must be in the blood my dad was a night club owner and a dj when I was a kid growing up,
so most of the time I would be running around in a night club or when my dad was djing, as I get older I never really considerer being a dj until a mate took it up and really got me into it.
Believe or not my 1st gig's on the dance scene where as a mc but don’t tell anyone!

Do you still enjoy clubbing as a leisure activity or
is it different when your not controlling the music?

God most of the time I wish I never knew who to dj, when I go clubbing I am always have one ear to the ground, I hate it as us djs are always so critical and train spotters! He he

Do you think you can ever get too far ahead of
Yourself?

Yes I think you can, as a dj you always think it's best to find all the new tunes before anyone else has them, but I find most of the time you have to mix it up with old and new,
You take it for granted that you think everyone knows about dance music, but most of the time they don’t or just know a bit..

How did this turn from a hobby into a career?

Another long story but to cut it short, me and a bunch of mates started a night in Bournemouth way back, and I djed just for fun, then the next thing I found myself with a job at the opera house handing out flyers in the rain till 5 in the morning, one night one of the djs for a miss moneypennys night did not turn up and I happened to be there, they asked me to fill in and the rest was history,

What was your first gig?

Well 1st unpaid gig was a free party near Dorchester, back then we where all to young to go to clubs, so it was in the car to a free party in the woods ever weekend,

1st paid gig would be a club in Dorchester again called The Buzz. Think I got £20 I was well chuffed

Who or what inspires you?

God so many things, my dad as he is still djing and going strong, anyone that is making music and playing it out.

What else is going on in your world right now?

Well it's been a mad year mad the move to London so have been living up here for a year now, and playing out hear and there also got some great gig coming up over the summer which I am really looking forward to, have also started work on making video martial to go along with my set!

Where would you like to be in 10 years time?

Still doing it and still loving it!

Are you conscious of different audiences when DJing?

Yes totally, I find more and more that you have to have a wider range of tunes to suite, otherwise you will be caught out!

Have you ever been afraid of people 'just not
getting
it'?

Yeah all the time, in fact ever time I play, I have never really been the kind of dj that sticks to one kind of music. And 9 time out of 10 they do get it. But that time they don’t does make you worry! But just stick with it

What's the best and worst place you've played a set?

Best: To many to say ha ha only joking I hope all my sets are good,

Worst: There have been a few and the key fact in them all of them is that I was playing music that was cheese !

You know what they say you are only as good as you last gig and I so think that is true!

Any embarrassing moments?

so so many but I will tell a few… one would be playing in Ireland at this big festival called Fella on the decks 2 hours later no dj's really need the toilet so had to go in the dj both, while everyone was dancing so so funny, others would be the classic taking the wrong record off, gay guys asking to kiss you in Singapore, getting you clothes rip off you in the middle of your set the list goes on and on

Do you ever switch off?

Yes. Love to, I love to cut the grass in my garden and do a bit of weeding

How does your sound differ from the rest?

God the big question, well I am not sure it does, I just play what I think I would like to dance to if I where on the floor and hope everyone else is into it.

What can we expect from your set when you play for us ?

That would be telling you will have to come and see!
