This article is about Incendiary Presents... 4by4 featuring Incendiary, Out of Order, Out-Break & Redemption! @ Havana in Portsmouth (UK), Sat 24 Nov 2007
This Saturday sees something truly exciting happening in the Portsmouth scene. Incendiary presents 4BY4 @ The Havana Bar brings together four of the South coasts cutting edge promotions: Incendiary, Out Of Order, Out-Break and Redemption to form one big night that aims to put the fun back into clubbing with special touches like a chillout room and massages.
Out of Order (OOO) was started by Dash-K, Matty Phact and Si Stylus. They have been promoting nights across the South and in London for five years and have hosted some cracking headliners from Judge Jules to Dave Pearce, from Superfast Oz to Phil Reynolds, and have even hosted an event with Tidy at Es Paradis this year on the legendary White Isle.
"This House is Out of Order" is the newest OOO brand especially for house/electro music, that was launched at the start of this month hosting a room at Smartie Partie's 12th birthday at Turnmills. Taking over 200 people with them OOO have firmly cemented their mark on the house scene. With tonnes planned for next year and a new Website bringing all the brands together due to launch before Christmas there's plenty to look out for!
Ahead of 4BY4 I thought a little Q&A was in order to help you get to know us all a bit more! With Part 1 I caught up with Dash-K and Gary Stalker. And now with Part 2 I present Colin Knox and myself - K8-e!
Dj name: Colin Knox Styles played: Mainly electro house on the tougher side, with a couple of phat breaks thrown in for good measure, and a sprinkling of funky and sometimes classic house music, heated on a baking tray at 135bpm for 1hr 30 mins. And there you have it, a typical dj set from myself. Oh yeah and classic trance!
How did you get involved with Out of Order?
I used to be a resident dj for a couple of really succesful nghts at the now closed down Enzos (High Post, Salisbury), one being Eden and the other Bezerk. These were great nights and the club was always rammed. I still remember one clubber explaining to me how he had to sell his TV so he wouldn't miss one event - that's dedication! Anyway after many great nights Enzos finally closed its doors. I always knew Kev (Dash-K) but not that well, I went to and Out of Order gig and we got talking and decided we should do an Eden reunion as a one off for everybody from back in the day to get together, so we did. I was on the dj line up along with a few old faces, the night was a success and the and the boys asked if I wanted to be involved in forthcoming events. I naturally said yes and the rest is history. Over the past few years I've made many friends, and helped promote and do some fantastic nights which involved getting drunk with Judge Jules, djing, having a laugh with Lisa Lashes and Lisa Pin-Up, not to mention Dave Pearce, The Tidy Boy and even waking up Scot Project from my spare bedroom to make sure he caught his flight to Ireland the next morning (a messy night!). For all those moments I thank the Out of Order boys and look forward to many more!
Who are your dj heroes and influences?
Producer wise from a trance point of view (which is where I started) no one touches Matt Darey or Agnelli & Nelson. But at the moment right now, because it changes with my mood, I'd say Dave Spoon, Axwell, Dirty South, Hoxton Whores, DJ Antoine, the funky side of things, Paul Rincon, Martin Solveig, M.A.W, there really is loads but my minds gone blank!
Any dj can be a hero by giving the crowd what they want to hear and enjoying themselves behind the decks, but my main heros are Spiderman, Superman and Captain America :)
What’s your favourite setup for djing?
I don't ask for much really but theree or four Pioneer CDJs would be nice. Then I could always keep my sample and scratch CD ready for action in one of them, mix on two and maybe listen to 80s music (my favourite) in the fourth. Also a couple of Technics just in case I decide to blow the dust off a classic. Othe than that a decent mixer, a blonde and a brunette on hand to feed me grapes when needed, a bottle of vodka, a bucket to piss in, but most importantly and up-for-it crowd!
What’s your favourite house tune and will you be playing it on Saturday?
I could sit here all night and not be able to answer that questions. I have so many favourites but I don't know! Maybe an electro house mix of Southside Spinners - Luvstruck (that I haven't made yet!).
Dj name: K8-e Styles played: Hard House, Funky Techno, Electro, Tech Trance
I remember when OOO used to run in Southampton and they always had good line ups. I really wanted to play so I sent my first demo CD to the boys. They got back to me and liked my sound. It led to me and my then boyfriend putting on a pre party with another local promoter for OOOs night at the Pier in Portsmouth which was the start of everything. Basically we continued working together on various nights and I’ve played for the boys quite a few times and had a lot of fun along the way.
My favourite dj is Justin Bourne, technically one of the best DJs I’ve ever seen. Misjah – again is one of the best technical djs I’ve seen – properly mixing up techno on 3 decks effortlessly. From a house perspective I got into mixing it after going to local night Punchfunk where I was really inspired, I love the real bassline driven electro house. I only play a handful of house gigs a year as I’m focusing mostly on hard house these days but I really enjoy the house gigs I do.
My setup at home really, 2 x Pioneer CDJ 1000 Mk3s, a DJM 600 and 2 x 1210s and some decent monitors! I tend to use a lot of CD these days but still love the vinyl I do have. All my house is on CD.
It's a hard question for any dj to answer this about tunes as one tune rarely defines why you like a genre. However one of my favourites would have to be Austin Leeds & Terranova - Only You. Was one of the first house tunes I bought and ALWAYS goes off when I play it. Thanks Colin! See you all Saturday at Havana!! Be there or be square.
