This article is about Slinky Classics @ Liquid and Envy in Portsmouth (UK), Fri 14 Sep 2007
When looking for a line up for Slinky Classics there was no doubt in our mind as to who we wanted to represent the harder side of the Slinky sound than legendary DJ and producer BK. He is without a doubt the godfather of hard house classics, with the biggest hit, Revolution, even entering the UK charts. Not only has he championed the hard house sound but he has also conquered the other side of the DJ market with his tough tech trance sounds of 'Soul Image' (a PVD favourite), or ‘Amino’ (Tiësto & Sander van Doorn favourite). He has also just released a new artist album called Under the Influence which came out in April 2007.
Slinky: So Mr BK, can I have your full name, current location as you write this and favourite childhood sweet? BK: Ben Keen I’m in my studio in London and I was a sucker for Refreshers and space dust!
Slinky: As it’s a Slinky Classics night… What’s you’re most classic moment? (I remember a classic BK moment in Cleethorpes, when you didn’t have your glasses on and tried to throw a t-shirt out to the crowd not realising there was netting in front of the booth, you were so surprised when the t-shirt bounced back at you!!) BK: Ha Ha I was lucky it wasn’t a record! I have had some wicked times at slinky but one of my most classic Slinky moments was the last one at the Opera House very emotional. But you guys are back with vengeance.
Slinky: What music do you listen to in your spare time? (I read in another interview that you listen to the Sugababes, however this was a long time ago) BK: I listen to any thing with great production. Pendulum are in the car at the moment!
Slinky: A bit of current affairs… What do you think about the whole smoking ban in the UK? BK: Good I don’t smell like an old ashtray when I leave the clubs. It will take allot of getting use to. It’s been around in other countries for ages and there scenes have dealt with it fine.
Slinky: Your new solo artist album is called Under the Influence…. Why? Did you write it off your head? He he… BK: Ha Ha. It’s obviously a play on words. I did allot of collaborations so took influences from the artists I worked with as well as getting off my head ;-)
Slinky: What’s been your best gig this year? BK: Judgement Sundays was amazing as ever!
Slinky: What are your top 2 or 3 records you’re playing out at the moment? BK: BK & Vinyl Groover ‘Dirt Box’, Eskimo ‘Recycled’, BK & Alex Kidd ‘Suicide’
Slinky: What can we expect from you at Slinky Classics in September? BK: A mixture of all the biggest tunes I have played at Slinky over the years.
Slinky: Have you ever had anything thrown at you whilst djing? Good or bad, like women’s knickers or a bottle? BK: I had a pair of knickers wrapped round a carrot one at tidy.
Slinky: Everyone’s been talking about the weather, so we thought we would too. What’s the best way to spend a rainy day? BK: In Slinky off your chops!
Slinky: We thought we’d give you the same Slinky quickfire round as we did for Ed Real, fellow Riot! Entrepreneur and DJ… Daddy or chips? Chips Slinky or Riot? Both! After party or bed? After party Arse, legs or tits? Yes please in that order Red or white? Red Looks or personality? Personality Pink or brown? Pink Comfort or fashion? Comfortable fashion!
