This article is about PunchFunk/Breakneck - Justin Robertson, Sub Focus, Fearless "ibizan heathens" special!! @ South Parade Pier in Portsmouth (UK), Fri 28 Sep 2007
Hello freaks 'n'geeks...
Well time has flown like misguided moth and led us to the end of the season..how did we get here?..Where do i start?...What is my name?...so many questions and so little time to answer before i go and enjoy another closing party.
Some may know that we were obviously anxious about our first season at launching the new business, 'Icon Ibiza'. We gave up the comforts of home and packed up our old kit bags, making our mazy way to the white isle by boat (in storm force 10 conditions) and car across Spain. I myself had to drive a rather tired old ‘luton’ van for most of the trip. It was full to the brim of goodies for the villa and it did struggle to clamber up the ranges of hills in central Spain before joining the boat to Ibiza and getting trapped behind a broken down JCB for 5 hours. It was disembarking the Ferry and blew its tyres (this applies mainly to Si and Marie...unlucky!).
That was to be the start of the adventure and give us a clear indication that, as ever, life in our weird world was never going to be easy. It wasn’t long after arriving that we were put to work on Ian’s villa. After several hours sleep we were knocking up tons of concrete and barrowing it into large trenches in the ground making way for the new build on the rear of his existing villa. It was a good way of getting a tan and we were all grateful for being here and having this opportunity!!
What was supposed to start as a chauffer company after pretty much just driving at the beginning of the season ended up being a VIP solution’s company dealing with every part of a person’s stay who wants to sample the more luxurious side of Ibiza.
It was a slow start but with the endeavor of the team, Charlie’s contacts and the quality of Ian’s cars we have staked our claim as the best bespoke VIP service on the island. From looking after South African billionaires to P.Diddy and every DJ you can shake a shitty stick at we have managed to make Icon the talk of Ibiza.
As a result of course we have spread the word of good book PunchFunk. We have told tall tales of the demented disciples that honour us with their presence every month and make whoopee on the dance floor. They have fascinated and the message has got through that the Ibizan heathens need their balmy paradise invaded with the silliest of souls. Timmy Sheridan spoke of his time here when he first arrived and of his Ibizan apprenticeship. Well we have more than served our first year with flying colours!!
Coming soon to a screen near you will be my miserly mug chatting with Tim for the BBC on how a young entrepreneur makes good out here. Not only this, but I was interviewed for Pete Tong’s Fast Trax. Once I have the screen reel I’ll stick some links up and find out when they get broadcast. You may even have seen pics and interviews in The Sun, The Star and several other publications..words are cheap ;o)
We have had our fair share of thrills and spills.. walking mountains, working 32 hour shifts, meeting heroes and facing the mad Spaniards on the roads.
And if you are to ask me “ will you do it again?” I will reply “ Of course” This is just the beginning. Next year the Fu*ked up love affair will dangle its big toe firmly in Ibizan drink and you lubberly lot will have no excuse not to come and escape the brow furrowing clouds of the Blighty sky line.
Ibiza is the centre of dance civilization and if you haven’t been here before and managed to get away from the usual haunts then we may have a solution for you summer hol’s next year!!
The past week has seen us say goodbye to the best night this summer in my opinion, Cark Cox’s King Of Clubs. This guy never fails to put on a show and seeing Space filled with lazers and the speakers belting out driving house and techno always paved the way for a great night. The closing was no exception with Laurent Garnier and Marky providing the guest sounds that sparked mayhem. We treated ourselves to a spot of VIP and it was definitely worth it. It’s not out of your reach to enjoy one night of pampering. When the club is packed you can take refuge and make your night last a lot longer!! The most special night at any club this season was at the closing. Carl playing Rob Mooney’s new track on PunchFunk Records, “Jo Jo Dancer” Simon even introduced the big man to Rob as he was stood with us behind the booth. A great moment that makes you realize time and time again why we love this business!
Other nights that have pleased our musical palettes have been Cocoon, Meganite and Kissdafunk. All different clubs and for the most part differing music! The let down I have to say has been We Love Sundays at Space. A lack of atmosphere and just drabness in general meant short stays at the club before heading somewhere else!
Music wise I think it’s fair to say we have enjoyed a heavy dose of deep house, techno and electro. We have tasted some of the funkier side of things, rolled back the years with some trance and also hop scotched around to some bad assed DnB!!
We enjoyed our forays into Bar M, Mambo's which included a live radio broadcast from the studio on express FM and of course what wprked out into somehwhat of a residency for us at Hush. despite being a mainly more commercial venue we managed to play music that kept the masses moving till the wee hours of the morning. Bless your souls all who braved it :o)
Samim’s “Heater” and Peter Von Gelderblom’s mix of “By the way” have rinsed the speakers just about more than Cliff Richard’s “Summer Holiday” in the motor of a family trip to Cornwall.
I’m sure there is plenty I have left out but you will just have to nail me down when you see me…we aim to leave this coming Friday making our 3 - 4 day trek home and so with it bring back the love so many of you have been missing!
What we have in store for the pier will probably be talked about for some time. We are pulling every stop out and making sure that it is an audio/visual treat. Apart from missing my lovely lady I have missed seeing so many smiling faces every month and can’t wait to get back into it!!
So friends, romans..i ask you to don your armour, sharpen your swords and steel yourselves for another chapter in the never ending chronicles of PunchFunk..
We wont put down the pen as long as you keep reading.
Amen!!!
