AN INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRES CALLY & JUICE BEFORE THE BLOODFEST ON SATURDAY

Hi guys its been a while since we have had you play and when you first appeared back in 2004 we believe it was your debut gig on the south coast with us at CONTACT . Since then you have gone onto rock crowds the UK and world over . When did you actually first start Djing professionally and how has the journey been so far ??

Cally: I started DJing in about ’93 and got my very first gig that same year. I impressed the promoter and so after the set I got offered a residency for Southern Exposure, at the time Wales’ biggest event of it’s kind, and so my second gig was playing to 1500 people! So it kind of went from a hobby to being professional almost straight away. It’s been a long journey but there’s an even longer one to come ;)

Juice: I actually wrote a couple of tunes back in 1994 with Cally and my brother Shaun under the name GSI before I even thought of DJ’ing. The tunes were well received and a year later I decided to buy a set of Technics and give the old DJ’ing ago. I already knew how to mix so it wasn’t difficult to pick up again and within 3 months of starting I was lucky enough to have a residency for a night called Tick-Tock in Swansea.

As for the journey so far? Well, it’s been hard work to get to where we are so far but because we feel so passionate about our work it’s never felt like a chore. I can’t imagine doing any other job.

You played some great sets for us all in the past what can we expect now?

C&J: Well we always put in 110%, no matter whether we’re playing to 50 people or 5,000, but as it’s been a while since we last played for you we should have some new tricks up our sleeves, also we’re playing more of our own material and our productions have really improved so expect to hear a lot of new original tunes, bootlegs and special edits.

CONTACT has been running 10 yrs this yr and you have been appearing for over 4 yrs at regular intervals and events such as CONTACT goes BIONIC . The scene has changed so dramatically over last 10 yrs or more in your eyes and words how do you see it ?

C&J: Well we’ve always belonged more to the European side of things rather than the typical UK sound so we can best comment on this. For us the past year or so the scene’s musically taken a turn for the worse as jumpstyle has become big overseas meaning the producers there have turned their back on the traditional hardstyle and hard trance, and for us the music just hasn’t been doing it. So rather than jump on any bandwagons as many would, we’ve just got our heads down in the studio to make more of what we like as we’ve found it hard to get hold of good material elsewhere. However just in the past few months we’ve noticed more and more good tunes appearing and thanks to people like Headhunterz and Showtek who stuck there neck out and put the bassline back into their hardstyle, now people as big as Technoboy are also finally following suit. I think that the next year will be very exciting and the music will definitely get better, improving over the jumpstyle sound and hopefully become more varied.

Whats the maddest , craziest , worse , best thing that has ever happened to you at a gig your performing at ?

C & J Good question. It’s going to be difficult to pick just one example of each but here goes: The MADDEST thing is probably when we were playing at a free party near Aberystwyth years ago. We were playing on an outside rig, near a reservoir and this girls complete with tie-die top and dreads just walked up in front of the decks, gave us a cheeky wink, hitched up her skirt, squatted down and took a piss right in front of us and everyone else! That was a show stopper right there. FYI she tried it again about 10 mins later but got boo’d off by everyone.

The CRAZIEST thing was probably playing out in Phoenix Arizona a few years ago, us, Shocker and 2 other friends (Stance and Ant) flew over for 5 days just to do one gig. The promoter put us up a Motel ( in the rough part of Phoenix) right by a busy freeway but it had a pool so we were quite happy. Within 2 hours of landing we’d drunk so much beer and were making so much noise that the promoter thought we’d be kicked out straight away. In fact the hotel manager, an elderly gentleman called Sam came to read us the riot act the next morning for jumping off the balcony into the pool. We had to turn on the Welsh charm pretty quick to get out of that one and it worked a treat because from that morning on Sam let us do what we like and, in fact would share a cold tin of Bud with us by the pool every morning. We can’t tell you everything that happened as it would take too long but involved drinking 100’s of cans of beer between us, being driven from house party to house party making new friends and breaking one set of fitted bedroom units by using Shocker as a human basket ball and missing our flight home. It’s been quite a few years since that week and we still remain very close friends with all the guys in Phoenix that looked after us over there.

As for the WORST moment, it was actually from that same week in Phoenix. it did involve Stance and Ant befriending a Pimp who was based directly below us and giving him a lift in our hire car to drop off 2 of his “girls” into an even rougher part of town. Don’t ask us why they did it but they said afterwards that they didn’t have much choice.

Hours later the same pimp knocks on our Motel door, mutters something to Juice and asks him to please help him out. Seconds later Juice finds out that the Pimp was buying drugs off a dealer with fake money and when he was caught out he said we’d given him the money and probably didn’t know any better because we were foreign. At this point it was the pimp, the dealer (with one hand inside his jacket) and Juice, looking confused, speaking Welsh, trying to pretend like he didn’t understand what was going on whilst at the same time trying to keep the blame off the pimp (who was bricking himself by this point). Suffice is to say, the old Welsh charm worked once again an no one got shot = ) but that was a very scary few minutes. FYI we told the pimp to fuck off and leave us alone from that second onwards.

Lastly, the BEST thing:

That’s very difficult to condense down to one particular event but we’d have to say the best thing so far was probably the reaction we received during our set in the main room of West Fest last October. Approx. 6000 going off in a Hardcore arena to us, playing Hardstyle. All 3 of us would probably rate that as one of the best moments so far in our careers.

Whats the maddest , craziest , worse , best thing that has ever happened to you outside of gigging , normal life so to speak ?

C&J: Wow, what a question, anyone who knows us knows that we could most definitely write at least 1 book or even a trilogy on all the crazy stories we have to tell, maybe that’s what we’ll do one day when we’re too old to DJ, lol!

On previous visits you like to foot scratch and other crazy tricks anything new to your armory for the contact overload troops ?

C&J: Although we don’t have a ‘brand new standout trick’ that springs to mind, we’re constantly refining the tricks we do, and also putting old tricks back into our set that we’ve forgotten about. If we actually sat there and had a think of all the mad tricks we’ve come up with in the past (e.g. playing records backwards and upside down (?!), etc) we’d probably be surprised at all the tricks we’ve actually forgotten to do for so long. As you’ve asked we’ll have to think of a couple to perform at the event that we haven’t done for some time so keep an eye on what we’ll be doing ;)

What is the best thing about CONTACT in your eyes ?

C&J: The crowd. To be honest that’s probably the best thing about any good event. They’re just like our Bionic and Breathe crowds, full of energy, enthusiasm and are open to many different styles, not just one sound meaning we can really give them the full spectrum of what we play. Also we love the attention paid to production, last time we were very impressed with the on-stage pyrotechnics that went off during our set…even if it did take us a little by surprise!

How do you find the scene in other countries are they as mad for it as us Englanders ?

C&J: That’s a hard one to call, also I wouldn’t just put all Englanders in the same class though, as some crowds through England are a bit more ‘laid back’ on the dancefloor so to speak. I think the best events are regular events that have a good following so you see some of the same faces week in, week out. I think you’ll get the better reaction from these events usually.

Can you tell us a bit about your new projects dance music related or otherwise ?

C&J: Well we’ve just launched ‘Ourstyle Digital’ and ‘Ourstyle Digital Exclusive’ so we’ll be releasing across more formats now. Also we’ve been very busy in the studio as mentioned so although we were very quiet in releasing tunes last year we’re certainly making up for it this year. We’ve recently had a few out with Steve Hill on his Masif imprint, we’ve a remix we did with Sam Punk coming out very soon, there’s our remix of the Q-Base 2008 anthem coming out on the highly prestigious Q Dance label and we also have our next release ready to go with a remix from International hardstyle legend DJ Activator. Also the next few of ours to follow are already finished so we’re hoping to have quite a few releases out by Christmas.

Digital revolution how has it affected you ,do you still release on vinyl ?

C&J: Well as mentioned we’ve only just released our digital label, we were a bit slower than most but we still value the place vinyl has in our scene. As a result the tunes we release on vinyl will be coming out a few months ahead of the digital release. Although there will also be tracks only coming out exclusive on digital so there will be things to look forward to on both formats.

Would you ever consider playing a b2b set with someone on same bill for us ?

C&J: Never say never but it’s something we prefer not to do, as we are b2b already. Although we have made a few special exceptions in the past, playing alongside our good friends the Organ Donors, Kutski and M-Zone. But to be honest playing b2b isn’t just about taking it in turns to play tunes. I think sometimes people are just thrown back to back on a flyer to make the line-up look more impressive, but it doesn’t always work. We’ve worked hard at playing b2b, learning techniques, understanding each other’s next move before it’s even performed, so we really do prefer to just play b2b without adding a 3rd DJ into the mix.

Have you ever thought about live performances as well as DJ sets ?

C&J: Yes this is something we have planned. As we have a big rock influence in our sets it’s kind of going to be based around that. We can’t say too much for the time being though as it’s still in the planning and preparation stages but watch this space ;)

Any plans for an artist album soon ?

C&J: We’re in no rush to do this as it’s something we wouldn’t want to do ‘for the sake of it’ and would want to get it just right, but it is something we’ve talked about previously and definitely something that will happen when the time is right.

How do you approach remixing tunes that are already considered classic ?

C&J: Well when doing this you have to be careful. The rule we stick by is if you can’t better it then don’t touch it. Also we don’t think there’s point in doing it unless you can do something a bit different with it. But as we’ve written many bootlegs over the years we’d like to think when it comes to remixing we’re pretty good at getting it right.

If you could have written any tune what would it be ?

Cally: I always find it difficult answering questions like this as I have such a big appreciation of so many styles of music. Nope, I’m finding it hard to name one tune, but would love to have written so many of the Prodigy’s tunes, they must be one of the most sampled dance acts around. All their original tunes are so defining for the moment they were created and give you that feeling that you’ve heard it somewhere before when you first hear it.

Juice: Bloody hell, that was a good answer by Cally. I was going to say that lol. If we’re talking about dance music then I would have loved to have written Blue Mondays by New Order. This is one of the first dance tracks I ever heard. It just captured my attention and imagination completely. I just played it again and again. It still gives me goose bump when I hear it and it was first released in 1984! If you don’t know the song it’s the tune they’ve used recently on the Mars adverts = ),. Simply timeless.

If you could remix any tune what would it be ?

C&J: As we’re constantly bootlegging tunes for our sets then if there’s something we want to remix, we normally just go ahead and bootleg it cutting up the parts of the original and adding to it. So just keep listening to our sets, you’ll usually find a new bootleg or special edit added every week.

Are there any artists you would like to work along side ?

C&J: Bit of a tricky question this one, as I have always been a believer in ‘too many cooks’. Also everyone has their own way of doing things so it’s not always easy to just get in the studio with someone else to make a combined effort without clashing on ideas, production styles etc. There are quite a lot of artists though it would be nice to do something with: Headhunterz, Showtek, Technoboy, Pendulum, Scott Atrill (Vinylgroover) & Jim Sullivan, to name just a few.

What kind of music do you listen to when you relax ?

Cally: I listen to so much music, from many genres, a lot of rock like Linkin Park and Metallica, some hip hop, loving that new ‘Handlebars’ tune at the moment, if it’s chill out though maybe Jason Mraz or Maroon 5, it changes all the time though, if you asked me the same thing next week my answer would probably be different again.

Juice: Just like Cally, I don’t tend to listen to dance music when I’m relaxing as I don’t want to get fed up of any tunes so I deliberately blank all dance music unless we’re in the studio or out DJ’ing. So when I’m chilling out or in the car I tend to listen to a lot of Linkin Park and Blink 182. They’ve written some amazing tunes and you can probably tell that we’ve been influenced by these types of bands by listening to our sets over the past 18 months.

What do you do when your not working ??

Cally: Believe it or not we don’t get much time to relax, my working week is always flat out, very often working till late in the evening. If I get time to chill then it’s normally watching a movie with my girlfriend on the weekend or getting drunk and playing the X Box or Wii. But you can’t beat a movie and a fridge full of booze after a gig! ;)

Juice: Same here really, there’s nothing better than watching a movie with Cally’s girlfriend ; )

Ha Ha Ha, only joking, she talks all the way through = ). Seriously though, when we gave up our day jobs about 2 years ago, I thought we’d have more time to our selves but the whole week is spent making new tunes or doing boring things like mileage claims for the accountant or updating websites etc. Although please don’t feel tool sorry for us, it’s way better than working = )

You must meet a lot of barmy Army on your travels anyone or anything stood out in particular ?
