here it is....

Adultnapper
For the last three years former Las Vegas raised punk-rocker turned DJ, Francis Harris, AKA Adultnapper has been locked away in his Brooklyn studio, honing his electronic music production skills, creating his own distinct sound. And now, as he stumbles from his production dungeon, blinking at the now alien sunlight, he brings us what his ‘people’ describe as ‘a sophisticated vision of electronic dancefloor sonics characterized by elaborate swung micro-rhythms, thick musical baselines, complex arrangements, haunting tonal melodies and brooding introspective atmospheres.’ Do what? Well, that’s good enough for us to show an interest. Anyone who can inspire such a mouthful of a description must have something going on….so we got hold of Francis, threw him into a disused well and lowered some questions down to him in a basket. These are the answers he sent back up.

Right. Answer these questions, Francis, or we’ll turn the hose on you again. And put that lotion in the basket. What’s your name and where do you come from?

Hello, I am known as Adultnapper and I come from the land of make believe.

Oi, less of the sass. What would you be doing if you hadn’t forged a career in music?

Teaching literature and writing…. in space.

Argh. I thought I told you to lose the attitude. Where do you find you musical motivation?

Any form of experimentation. Trying to have some form of thought. When I was an impressionable youth, I was into noise and punk.

Who inspires you musically?

Tim Hecker, Audion, Plastikman ala Consumed, Lawrence, Bela Bartok, Slint, Glenn Gould, Nick Cave, Steve Albini, Lungfish, Gastr Del Sol, Palace Brothers, Kings of Convenience….I know…weird mix.

Tell us about your first club gig in the UK.

It was at the End. I had met Layo and Bushwacka in New York. They saw me play and invited me to play the Subterrain party at the End. I was scheduled to play the lounge with them, but some last minute changes were made and I ended up doing the opening set on the main floor before John Acquaviva, Richie Hawtin, and Mr. C. To say the least, I was nervous. I did ok, but by my standards now, I probably sucked.

How would you describe the music that you play?

Melodic Druggy House for weirdos.

How do you feel about the state of the music world today?

I think it’s a mixed bag. On one hand you have what could be the downfall of the record industry with digital downloads etc. On the other hand, you see a creative dilation of sorts with artists from developing countries etc with a greater ability to get their music out there, which in effect, lends a great deal to the music scene. Of course this can definitely lead to an inundation of crap, but the one great song that crawls out of the heap makes it worth it.

What do you think is wrong with the dance music industry and what would you do to rectify it?

I think dance music is a powerful medium, but often it is driven by sycophants, who care more about being stars than they do about the music. What always made dance music innovative was the anonymity of the DJ in a club. It was less about the DJ in the booth and more about what was happening on the floor. I hope that the music I make is in some way indicative of this kind of attitude.

Some fools say that dance music is dead. What have you got to say to them?

Well, that’s just silly isn’t it. To say any form of art is dead is far too pessimistic to even warrant an intelligent conversation.
