Kiss My Bass interview our 1st birthday guest - FOAMO!

Kye Jules Gibbon AKA Foamo is 21 years old. He is also in the enviable position of being one of the most talked about DJ/producers in the underground dance scene. Hailing from High Wycombe, Foamo's productions start on a foundation of dnb influenced and fuse electro, house, techno and dubstep sounds to great effect. His remix of 'Half In Love' by Mystery Jets slayed dancefloors and his treatment of Indie darling La Roux's 'Bulletproof' is set take up yet another level. On top of this he is an extremely in demand DJ, already touring the world with what can only be described as 100% party. It was with this in mind that Kiss My Bass decided he was perfect for the role of headliner at their 1st birthday party. KMB's Udy and Fotza put together a few questions so we all might learn a little more...

KMB: So Mr. Foamo sir, in the words of Zoolander's Mugatu you are so hot right now. I remember reading last year that you still had the day job, when did it change and was it gradual or instant?

FOAMO: Well I left college and went straight to a really boring office job working for a water company. I would go to work having had no sleep because I'd been up all night working on productions or doing a gig. When I got booked for Australia, that was the thing that tipped the balance. I couldn't get the time off work so it was a decision of touring Austalia or designing sewage treatment plants.

KMB: Sounds like a hard decision! So with such recent success in making the switch you must have some advice for upcoming DJs and producers?

FOAMO: For me, I got my name around for my productions. I was lucky enough to get support from some big name DJs and I find it amazing that these people find enough time to listen to new producers, and it helps so much to get their support. My advice to producers is just keep doing what you're doing, theres no right or wrong way of doing things. One thing ive noticed from doing collaborations and seeing other producers is that every person has completely different styles of working. No software or equipment is better than any other. I always thought there were insider secrets of how to get a good sound, but there really isn't: it just takes a lot of practice. Once you've got music youre happy with, just send it to as many DJs as you can for feedback.

KMB: Some sage advice, glad to know there isn't some kind of conspiracy going on. Music certainly seems to be getting more social, especially dance music. You are quoted as supporting the music blog scene, which has contributed to your success greatly. Do you think that the devaluation of music leads to more throwaway tracks which are hot for a very short period of time and does it even matter as long as people are enjoying themselves?

FOAMO: Blogs are great for exposing new music and stuff. I don't know about other people but personally I wouldnt say it's made music lose it's excitement at all which I hear people say. I hate it when people try to over-analyse stuff, always talking about trends and what's cool and what's not. I try not to think about that stuff too much, just play out the music I love and the music that excites me.

KMB: People certainly seem to be thanking you for that ethos. But what they really want to know is do pineapple and cheese go well together?

FOAMO: Of course!

KMB: Really? At this point in the interview I'm seriously considering pulling the gig after that revelation.

FOAMO: Pineapple makes the best pizza topping!

KMB: OK, we'll let this one go. Where exactly did the name Foamo come from?

FOAMO: I actually don't remember, I've had it since I was a little boy.

KMB: How strange. I hear the nightlife is fantastic in High Wycombe, did you use to get in trouble to pass the time or were you a good boy?

FOAMO: I once spent a night in a police cell after being wrongly arrested for criminal damage to a concrete bin.

KMB: Haha, classic. Some dance artists produce tons and tons of dancefloor tracks and never really get enough variation together to make a proper album. Is this something you hope to do in the future?

FOAMO: Definitely. I can't see it happening for a while but it's something I'll be thinking about.

KMB: Excellent. So finally, what does Foamo do to chill out?

FOAMO: Well I have a hamster called Max. I also eat a lot of food.

KMB: Ditto. Mr. Foamo you've been an absolute star, thank you for your time!
